Anne Sutton said, "What, you think I’ll starve to death? I was living just fine before you came along, wasn’t I?"

"Is that so?" Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Then I was just overthinking it."

Anne Sutton looked at him, shifting her position in his arms. "Could you please not talk to me like I’m younger than Ian? I’m a grown woman! And a mother, for goodness’ sake!"

Nathan Fawcett watched her, took her hand, and said nothing.

When he had a free moment, he liked to hold her, clasping her hand, his thoughts a mystery.

Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "My mom told me today that she wants to learn how to drive so I won’t have to pick her up anymore."

Nathan Fawcett said, "That’s great."

Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. "Your mom seems to be doing really well lately."

"Yeah!" Anne Sutton said. "It just proves that women need to stay away from men if they don’t want to be angered to death every day."

Nathan Fawcett’s lip twitched. "Let’s be clear, I haven’t been angering you."

Anne Sutton smiled. "I wasn’t talking about you! I was talking about my dad. Tell me, why did my mom work so hard her whole life, only to be despised by him in the end? Just because she didn’t give him a son? Is a son really that important?"

All because that woman with the surname Jiang gave birth to a son.

’He was willing to give up their entire family for that!’

Anne Sutton felt a pang of sadness whenever she thought about it.

Seeing her expression, Nathan Fawcett said, "It looks to me like Auntie Sutton has moved on, but you still haven’t."

"Have you moved on?" Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. "You hated your father, too."

Even now, when he went back to Westhaven, he wouldn’t visit his dad.

Listening to Anne Sutton’s words, Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Perhaps."

Anne Sutton said, "Well, I’m going to sleep."

"You don’t want to talk a little longer?"

’He wanted to talk with her!’

"I’m a little tired," Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett. "Aren’t you tired?"

She had gotten off work late today, and it was already dark when she got home.

It was getting late.

Nathan Fawcett hugged her, pulled the blanket up, and said, "Go to sleep."

He didn’t make a move on Anne Sutton, simply holding her as they slept through the night.

The next morning, as Anne Sutton was packing her things, Nathan Fawcett helped her organize everything.

She looked at the man who was now helping her pack her luggage before a trip and said, "Nathan, you’re acting like such a sweet guy!"

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett glanced at her and quirked his lips into a smile. "So, do you like the me of today, or the me of the past?"

"I like both."

Her simple answer delighted him.

Nathan Fawcett’s lips curved into a smile.

After seeing Anne Sutton off, Nathan Fawcett went to the office. There was a meeting today, and Caleb Summers was giving a report.

Although Caleb Summers often annoyed Nathan Fawcett in their daily lives, he was truly a good partner when it came to work.

Nathan Fawcett sat to one side, staring at Caleb Summers.

When Caleb Summers finished his presentation, he walked over to Nathan Fawcett and asked, "What are you staring at me for? What’s wrong today? Bad mood?"

Nathan Fawcett glanced at him. "Nothing. I’m in a great mood."

"I heard from Ian that Anne went on a business trip."

Nathan Fawcett’s lip twitched. "You’re certainly well-informed."

"Of course!" Caleb Summers said. "Now that she’s living at your place, I don’t even dare to come looking for you, lest you accuse me of something again!"

He was worried Nathan Fawcett would accuse him of having designs on Anne Sutton again.

He didn’t even dare to go over anymore.

Hearing Caleb Summers’s words, Nathan Fawcett said, "That’s because you have a guilty conscience."

Caleb Summers said, "I didn’t know who she was back then! If I had known, how would I have dared?"

"You wouldn’t have dared," Nathan Fawcett said. "But weren’t you going to the hospital every day to corner her, just trying to drive her away?"

"I was just trying to keep her from dragging you down! But lately, I’ve noticed you really like her, so I haven’t said anything, have I?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "You should be glad you’re not an idiot."

Caleb Summers said, "Right! By the way, since Anne isn’t here, want to go to Auntie Sutton’s for dinner tonight? I’ve been so busy with the project these past two days that I haven’t had a chance to visit."

Nathan Fawcett said, "Let’s go tomorrow. I have to take Ian home today."

After work, Nathan Fawcett picked up Ian and returned to the Linden Family estate, where he happened to run into Anna Linden.

He looked at his mother and said, "Mom."

Anna Linden said, "So, the moment Anne Sutton leaves town, you remember you have a home to come back to?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "You didn’t send her away just for this, did you?"

’His mother had actually arranged a training opportunity for Anne Sutton.’

Anna Linden said, "If that’s what you want to think, there’s nothing I can do about it!"

Nathan Fawcett said, "I came back today because there’s something I need to talk to you about."

Anna Linden looked at him.

Nathan Fawcett sat down and told Ian to go upstairs and put his little backpack away.

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anna Linden and said, "Anne’s mother is in town now, isn’t she? When you have time, why don’t we all have a meal together? That way, you’ll have officially met. Anne and I are together now, and we’re planning to get married. These things need to be arranged."

Anna Linden said, "I refuse."

"Why?" Nathan Fawcett looked at his mother. "You were supportive of me being with her!"

"You know full well that was only because I had no choice," Anna Linden said. "Haven’t you been going to the hospital for check-ups and taking your medicine? Let’s talk about all this after you’ve recovered."

"If I do get better, you’ll just make me be with someone else, won’t you?"

Nathan Fawcett looked at his mother, deeply suspicious of her words.

Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s question, Anna Linden didn’t deny it. "You’ve never even tried to get to know anyone else. How do you know you won’t regret this later? How do you know she’s the only one you can love? Perhaps you’ll fall in love with someone else."

"I won’t," Nathan Fawcett stated firmly.

Anna Linden said, "Wait until that day comes, then you can say these things to me."

Listening to his mother, Nathan Fawcett said, "Anne and I are already together. We have a child. Do you want me to be like my father, a scumbag who abandons his wife and child? Will you only be satisfied then?"

The conversation had started out calmly, but upon hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Anna Linden’s face darkened. "Do you have any idea what you’re saying?"

’He’s actually using his father to attack me.’

Nathan Fawcett said, "I don’t think I’m wrong! I’ve chosen her, and I want to be with her! I don’t know what kind of woman you want me to marry, but in this life, I won’t marry anyone but her! Even if my health improves, I will only be with her!"

Because of his parents’ marriage, he especially detested irresponsible men.

Therefore, he would only be responsible for Anne Sutton. He would never get involved with any other woman.

Anna Linden looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, "Think whatever you want, but I will not agree, nor will I meet her family."

With that, Anna Linden stood up and walked out the door.

She sat in her car, staring outside. The sky had already darkened, but her heart felt heavy with sorrow.

’How ironic.’

’He was raised by his father, of all people. And yet, he’s nothing like him!’

’How could he be so completely devoted to Anne Sutton?’

’Shouldn’t he have turned out just like his father?’

Anna Linden realized she was simply resentful. She couldn’t accept that her luck had been so terrible. She refused to admit that good men still existed in the world.

’Even if that man is my own son!’
