Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 80: Error or Heir
The question stayed between them longer than any panel. What are they to you? Jace looked past Eleanor at the Safe Zone. A child asleep against a rolled blanket. Two volunteers carrying water. James's crews still working the weakened north wall. Avery's paper ledger under Eleanor's hand.
Jace watched the classification percentages move while people behind him kept working. The hearing treated those lives as evidence. The workers treated the hearing as something happening near a broken wall that still needed fixing. He trusted the second priority more.
"People," Jace said.
Nothing happened. Eleanor waited. Olivia did too. Jace looked at the fourteen pale Free Claim lines behind his vision.
"People I'm trying to keep alive."
The hearing answered.
TRUTHFUL RESPONSE VERIFIED.
Evidence: 14 → 17.
Legal Insight: 6% → 9%.
Classification Pressure:
CLAIMANT: 31% → 28%.
ERROR: 19% → 21%.
HEIR: 16% → 19%.
Unrecognized relationship definition detected.
Eleanor's eyes moved across the change.
"That answer is legally incomplete."
"It's personally complete."
"The hearing requires a relationship."
"Protected."
"By whom?"
"Sometimes me. Sometimes each other."
"Under whose authority?"
Jace looked at the wall again.
"Depends what's broken."
The System hesitated.
Evidence: 17 → 20.
Audit Resistance: 5% → 9%.
Eleanor's attention sharpened with it. Then the hearing changed direction.
TITLE HISTORY REVIEW
All active, suspended, candidate, and revoked titles admissible as behavioral evidence.
Titles do not testify to intent.
Titles testify to expected role and recorded compliance.
Olivia stood.
"You're using rewards as witnesses."
"Titles are contracts."
"Contracts require acceptance."
"Not all titles do."
"That is not helping your argument."
"I am not making an argument."
The first title opened.
Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.
FORBIDDEN HEIR OF THE ZERO-PROTOCOL
Expected Behaviors:
Assert inherited authority.
Reclaim sealed Crownline structures.
Override lower registry restrictions.
Preserve bloodline priority.
Recorded Behavior:
Authority assertions: 19.
Authority refusals: 47.
Inherited-structure claims: 3.
Living-person ownership claims: 0.
Registry violations: 83.
Classification Compliance: 22%.
The System placed the title beneath HEIR.
HEIR PRESSURE: +12%.
ERROR PRESSURE: +7%.
Jace frowned.
"I've been bad at being royalty."
Eleanor looked at him.
"You have been inconsistent with the role."
"Same thing with better posture."
The next title opened.
THE UNCROWNED LANDLORD
STATUS: SUSPENDED.
Grant:
Territory awareness.
Barrier access.
Local defense functions.
Expected Behaviors:
Register tenants.
Collect rent.
Assign shelter priority.
Enforce territorial obligations.
Recorded Behavior:
Protected occupants: 231.
Registered tenants: 0.
Rent collected: 0.
Labor debt created: 0.
Property attached: 0.
Unauthorized shelter acts: 231.
Protection deficit accepted by title holder: YES.
Classification Compliance: 0%.
The north wall groaned. A support rib faded another shade as the hearing processed the violation count.
AUDIT CONSEQUENCE
Unauthorized Shelter Tally: 231.
Title legitimacy under standard behavior: FAILED.
Safe Zone effective defense: 45% → 43%.
Olivia pointed toward the workers.
"There. He shelters two hundred thirty-one people without rent, and your record calls the shelter unauthorized instead of the rent unnecessary."
Eleanor's face remained still.
"The title defines its role through tenancy."
"Then the title is wrong."
"That is possible."
Olivia stopped. Jace looked at Eleanor.
"That sounded dangerous."
"It is merely accurate."
Avery wrote it down immediately. Eleanor noticed and almost objected. Almost. The white panel reflected against her face. Up close, she looked less polished than she had when she arrived. There was a faint line at the corner of her mouth. A tiny shadow beneath one eye. Details the System's clean presentation had hidden until Jace knew to look for them. She was not expressionless. She was practiced.
Eleanor opened the next record herself.
GLITCH KING: CANDIDATE TITLE
Recognition: INCOMPLETE.
Expected Behaviors:
Centralize anomalous authority.
Accept command priority.
Convert protected errors into governed subjects.
Establish singular rule over contested systems.
Recorded Behavior:
Title influence accepted: 0 times.
Title influence refused: 4 times.
Command centralization: REJECTED.
Free Accord created: YES.
Free Claim network created: YES.
Voluntary defense participation: YES.
Candidate Compatibility: 5%.
Behavioral contradiction: EXTREME.
The title shifted under ERROR.
ERROR PRESSURE: +16%.
The hearing recomputed.
CLASSIFICATION INDEX
ERROR: 37%.
HEIR: 27%.
CLAIMANT: 19%.
WEAPON: 11%.
STOLEN ASSET: 6%.
Evidence: 20/100.
Audit Resistance: 9%.
Legal Insight: 9%.
Olivia watched ERROR move to the top.
"If Error wins, what happens?"
"Correction review."
"Meaning?"
"His incompatible behaviors are identified and removed where possible."
The answer was so clean that Avery stopped writing. Jace looked at Eleanor.
"Removed from me?"
"Yes."
"And if the behavior is refusing to own people?"
Eleanor did not answer immediately. That silence was the answer. Olivia stepped closer to the table.
"So the evidence proving he protects people without ownership is also evidence that he needs correction."
"Yes."
The north barrier lost another legal support line.
Effective Defense: 43% → 42%.
Avery stared at the number.
"Every time we prove the shelter works, you strengthen Error."
Eleanor looked at the same panel.
"Yes."
"Then this hearing cannot recognize success unless the success fits a role."
Eleanor's calm slipped. Barely.
"Continue the evidence."
Avery's eyes narrowed.
"That wasn't a denial."
"No."
The title logs kept opening.
BROKEN REGISTRY ENTRIES: 114.
HOSTILE SYSTEM ENTITIES DEFEATED: 27.
PROTECTED LIVES CURRENT: 231 ABOVEGROUND / 412 VAULT CONTACTS.
LIVING FREE CLAIMS: 14.
OWNERSHIP CONVERSIONS: 0.
Each number moved Jace toward two categories at once. Heir, because impossible authority followed his bloodline. Error, because he kept refusing the behavior attached to it. Olivia saw the trap settle.
"You can prove what he is only by assuming what an heir is supposed to do."
Eleanor's gaze stayed on the title history.
"The hearing uses historical role definitions."
"Written by?"
No answer. Olivia leaned forward.
"Written by who?"
The white panels dimmed. A new field opened.
PRIOR CLAIM TESTIMONY REQUIRED.
Subject: Forbidden Palace / Lower Manhattan Territory.
Current claimant: Jace.
Prior registered claimant: SERAPHINA.
Reason:
Prior claim predates subject's territorial authority.
Testimony relevance:
Inheritance.
Unauthorized shelter.
Claim seizure.
Occupant status.
Seraphina testimony status: OPTIONAL → COMPELLED.
Jace looked toward the edge of the plaza. Seraphina's Free Accord line, pale since the audit began, suddenly turned white. Eleanor's expression changed before Seraphina even spoke. Not satisfaction. Something closer to regret. The System had found a witness older than Jace's claim.
Seraphina was compelled to testify because her registered claim predated his.
