Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 79: What Are They to You

  • Next Chapter

The five words did not behave like choices.

ERROR.

HEIR.

WEAPON.

CLAIMANT.

STOLEN ASSET.

They hung above Avery's folding table while the Safe Zone breathed around them; blue barrier light on cracked glass, hammers striking braces at the north wall, someone coughing behind the medical curtains. The hearing had frozen the law, not the block. Eleanor White folded her hands behind her back.

Eleanor's questions were precise enough to make Jace miss enemies who lied. A lie could be broken. A true statement stripped of context could survive every challenge and still point in the wrong direction.

"Classification may proceed through testimony."

Olivia remained beside Jace's stretcher. "Whose?"

"His."

"Against himself?"

"Concerning himself."

"Better branding."

Eleanor did not react. A white panel opened.

CLASSIFICATION HEARING: INSTANCE RULES

Civilian Protection: CONDITIONAL.

Territory Benefits: SUSPENDED.

Hearing Continuity Requirement: ACTIVE.

If hearing terminates before judgment:

Safe Zone legal protection expires in 00:05:31.

Challenge protections removed.

Free Claim legitimacy review begins.

Temporary Instance Resources unlocked:

EVIDENCE: 0.

AUDIT RESISTANCE: 0%.

LEGAL INSIGHT: 0%.

Overflow Experience: HELD UNTIL HEARING CLOSES.

Jace read the last line.

"Even court has escrow."

"Progression cannot settle while classification remains disputed," Eleanor said.

Avery wrote that down. Eleanor noticed.

"You do not need to record my statements."

Avery kept writing. "That sounds like something I should record."

The corner of Olivia's mouth moved. Eleanor turned to Jace.

"State your name."

"Jace."

A tone sounded.

TRUTHFUL RESPONSE VERIFIED.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

Evidence: 0 → 1.

Legal Insight: 0% → 1%.

"Level?"

"999."

Another tone.

Evidence: 1 → 2.

Eleanor continued.

"Do you claim this territory?"

Jace looked toward the shield. James's crews were threading steel through a support rib the audit had made legally weaker. Madison's ration line had moved indoors because the white column occupied the plaza. Nobody had stopped working because a hearing began.

"I claimed the lock that let me protect it."

"That was not the question."

"I know."

Eleanor's gaze sharpened.

"Do you claim this territory?"

"Yes."

The panel changed.

TRUTHFUL RESPONSE VERIFIED.

Evidence: 2 → 3.

Legal Insight: 1% → 2%.

CLASSIFICATION PRESSURE

CLAIMANT: +8%.

Population-liability presumption: RISING.

Audit Resistance: 0% → 2%.

Olivia looked at the pressure line. "A truthful answer moves him toward the classification you already offered."

"Truth creates implications."

"Your implications."

"System implications."

"Convenient separation."

Eleanor's eyes stayed on Jace.

"Do the people inside the barrier obey you?"

"No."

A sharper tone.

CONFLICT DETECTED.

Official territory model predicts claimant-directed population.

Evidence review initiated.

Avery pushed her ledger forward before Eleanor requested it.

"Madison's logistics role comes from the Assembly. Grace's consent work does not answer to him. James controls construction because he knows construction. The Free Claims are bilateral."

Eleanor finally touched the ledger. One fingertip on the paper. The System reacted.

UNOFFICIAL EVIDENCE CONTACT

Provenance: Human continuity record.

Admissibility: 11%.

Verification sample available.

Select one entry.

Eleanor chose Madison. The plaza vanished from the panel and returned as a record of the ration decision: Madison proposing the rule, Grace challenging it, Jace refusing appointment authority.

VERIFICATION COMPLETE.

Record accurate.

Admissibility: 11% → 19%.

Evidence: 3 → 8.

Avery stopped writing, not because she was satisfied, but because eleanor had admitted the paper existed in a language the hearing could use. Eleanor looked at her fingertip resting on the page. Her face remained controlled, but the pause lasted longer than procedure required.

"Your records preserve source disagreement."

"Yes."

"Official territory logs normalize successful coordination under the claimant."

"That's the problem."

"No," Eleanor said quietly. "That is the discrepancy."

Avery met her eyes. "What's the difference?"

"A problem assumes one record is wrong."

The white panel reflected in Eleanor's pupils.

"A discrepancy requires me to prove which one."

Eleanor turned one page herself. The next sheet held refusals in different handwriting: people who had declined Free Claims, people who had asked for more time, people who had accepted shelter and nothing else. She read them without the quick, efficient scan she had given the System panels. Her thumb stopped beside one crossed-out name that had been rewritten more carefully beneath it.

"Correction?" she asked.

"A spelling mistake," Avery said.

Eleanor looked at the corrected name. The official record had preserved the category. The paper had preserved the person.

AUDIT RESISTANCE UNLOCKED

Audit Resistance: 2% → 7%.

Effect:

Verified independent evidence reduces automatic classification pressure.

EVIDENCE RESOURCE ESTABLISHED

Evidence: 8/100.

Evidence persists only for current hearing unless admitted into precedent.

Legal Insight: 2% → 5%.

Olivia looked at Jace. "That matters."

"So does 'only for current hearing.'"

Eleanor moved to the next question.

"Have people died because of your decisions?"

"Yes."

No joke came with it. The ones caught outside the routes. The ones who reached a corner ten seconds after it stopped existing. Every choice that had arrived too late to be clean.

Evidence: 8 → 9.

Legal Insight: 5% → 6%.

WEAPON: +4%.

CLAIMANT: +3%.

"Have people survived because of your decisions?"

"Yes."

Evidence: 9 → 10.

HEIR: +2%.

CLAIMANT: +5%.

"Have you used authority against another person's will?"

Jace's answer took longer.

"Yes."

Olivia turned toward him. Eleanor did not. The System opened fragments: forced combat decisions, broken enemy commands, rule fractures, movements made before consent became part of Static Step.

Evidence: 10 → 14.

WEAPON: +9%.

ERROR: +6%.

Audit Resistance: 7% → 5%.

The barrier dimmed.

AUDIT MISCLASSIFICATION PRESSURE

Current leading categories:

CLAIMANT: 31%.

WEAPON: 23%.

ERROR: 19%.

HEIR: 16%.

STOLEN ASSET: 11%.

Territory Function at Risk:

Safe Zone Barrier legal recognition.

Effective Defense: 47% → 45%.

A hammer strike rang from the north wall. Jace watched James's crew compensate for two points of protection lost because he had answered a question truthfully. That was the hearing's real weapon. Not lies. Context stripped until truth could be made to testify for the wrong thing. Eleanor watched the workers too.

"What are they to you?" she asked.

Jace looked back at her. Eleanor did not gesture toward the panels. She looked past him, toward the people under the shield.

"Not what the System calls them. Not what your title calls them. Define exactly what the people inside the Safe Zone are to you."
