Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 78: Classification Hearing

  • Next Chapter

Nobody attacked Eleanor either. That became harder to appreciate when the Safe Zone began losing legal protection by the minute. The first warning appeared six minutes after Jace refused self-classification.

SAFE ZONE LEGAL STATUS

Status: UNDER REVIEW.

Current physical Barrier Integrity: 61%.

Audit-adjusted protection: 49%.

Population: 231.

Registered Property: 0.

Free Claims: 14.

Administrative grace period: 00:15:00.

At expiration:

Territory recognition suspended.

Civilian-protection priority removed.

Challenge protections removed.

Existing barrier may remain physically active until Reserve failure.

Initiating a Classification Hearing will suspend expiration until judgment.

Jace read it twice.

"Fifteen minutes to agree to court."

Eleanor stood beside Avery's table.

"Fourteen minutes, forty-six seconds."

"Thank you. Panic improved."

Olivia dragged a chair beside Jace's stretcher and sat.

"We request a continuation."

"Grounds?"

"Your audit froze the records we need to answer your audit."

"Official records remain available to me."

"They're our records."

"They are System records concerning your actions."

Olivia leaned back.

"There it is."

Eleanor's gaze sharpened slightly.

"What?"

"The part where access becomes ownership."

"No ownership has been asserted."

"You suspended our copy and kept yours."

"That is access control."

"Sure."

Avery pushed a paper ledger across the table.

"Then admit this."

Eleanor looked down. The page contained names, consent states, Free Claim terms, refusal records, voluntary labor, Charge sources, and witness signatures. Beside several entries Abigail had written small corrections where the System's labels differed from what people had called themselves. Eleanor scanned the page without touching it.

EVIDENCE SUBMISSION DETECTED

Source: Unregistered human record.

Chain of custody: PARTIAL.

System provenance: NONE.

Admissibility: 11%.

Avery's hands curled at her sides.

"Every person on that page is here."

"That improves verifiability."

"Then verify it."

"I cannot accept evidence before a hearing exists."

Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

Olivia pointed at the countdown.

"And the hearing only exists if Jace agrees to be classified."

"Yes."

"That is coercive."

"No."

The answer came without defensiveness. Olivia rose.

"His civilians lose legal protection if he refuses."

"Correct."

"The territory loses challenge protection."

"Correct."

"The evidence cannot be admitted unless he enters the process."

"Correct."

"And you're calling that voluntary?"

Eleanor looked at her.

"No."

The word stopped Olivia. Eleanor's face had not changed, but something in the room had.

"The System does not classify participation as voluntary," she said. "It classifies participation as procedurally available."

Jace looked at her more carefully.

"You know the difference."

"Yes."

"And that doesn't bother you?"

"That question is outside the hearing."

"Convenient."

"It is."

The answer carried no pride. That was worse. Eleanor placed one finger against the edge of Avery's ledger. Her hand was steady. The nail was short, unpainted, entirely ordinary.

"Your record says fourteen active Free Claims."

"Yes," Avery said.

"The official network also says fourteen."

"Good."

"Your record says none are owned."

"Yes."

"The official system records all fourteen as unresolved deviations from standard claim architecture."

Avery's expression hardened.

"That doesn't make our record wrong."

"No."

Olivia stepped closer.

"Then admit it."

"I cannot."

"Why?"

"Because truth and admissibility are separate properties."

The sentence landed without cruelty. Eleanor looked down at Abigail's handwriting.

231 people protected.

0 people owned.

Something tightened beside her left eye. The change was so small Jace almost blamed the Corruption. Avery saw it too.

"You know that number is true."

Eleanor lifted her gaze.

"I know the number was recorded."

"That wasn't what I said."

"No."

The countdown reached ten minutes.

SAFE ZONE CIVILIAN PROTECTION

Administrative Grace: 00:09:59.

Audit-adjusted defense: 49% → 47%.

Challenge immunity: WEAKENING.

Glitch Tax: ACTIVE.

Charge Reserve: 734.

Manual allocation: SUSPENDED.

Jace opened Breach Sight. The timer had no hidden clause. That bothered him almost as much as when one did. If he let it reach zero, the System would stop recognizing the people under the shield as protected civilians. The blue wall might remain until the Charge ran out, but noble challengers could legally cross it. Recovery claims could restart. Every exception they had forced into existence would still physically exist while the law behaved as though none of it counted.

Olivia saw his expression.

"Choose Claimant."

Jace looked at her.

"We fight the definition after the shield is safe."

"Claimant triggers population-liability review."

"So does the hearing eventually."

"It gives them a cleaner route."

"And refusing gives them the whole block."

Her voice remained controlled, but the strain showed now.

"You do not have to win every definition in the first filing, Jace. Sometimes you keep jurisdiction long enough to argue tomorrow."

"And sometimes temporary tenant status lasts thirty days."

"That was a different contract."

"Same machine."

Olivia's stare held.

"People are under that barrier right now."

"I know."

"Then stop treating every imperfect legal position like surrender."

The words hurt because she was right about part of it. Avery looked between them and said nothing. Eleanor did.

"Counsel's position is procedurally sound."

Olivia turned on her.

"I did not ask for help."

"I was not helping."

The countdown reached eight minutes. Jace opened CLAIMANT. The hidden consequences unfolded.

PROVISIONAL CLASSIFICATION: CLAIMANT

Immediate effects:

Territory recognition maintained.

Civilian protection maintained.

Challenge immunity maintained during review.

Required follow-up:

Define relationship to protected population.

Validate title behavior.

Accept liability for unauthorized protection.

Population ownership: NOT AUTOMATICALLY ESTABLISHED.

Jace stopped on the last line. Olivia saw it.

"It does not automatically make them property."

"No."

"Then choose it."

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"It also creates a presumption that every protection relationship originates from his authority."

Olivia's face changed. There. The cleaner route. Avery opened the paper ledger.

"That contradicts the record. Madison's logistics role came from the Assembly. Construction crews were voluntary. Free Claims require bilateral consent. Seraphina's Accord is mutual."

"All of which may be submitted during hearing."

"If he chooses Claimant first, those become exceptions to his authority instead of evidence that authority wasn't central."

Eleanor looked at Avery.

"Yes."

Olivia closed her eyes. The argument had not been beaten by a better speech. It had been beaten by the clause. Jace closed CLAIMANT.

Administrative Grace: 00:06:11.

Eleanor watched him.

"You may still select another classification."

"Error lets you correct me."

"Yes."

"Heir?"

"Succession review."

"Weapon?"

"Containment."

"Asset?"

"Transfer review."

"Great selection."

Administrative Grace: 00:05:52.

Eleanor turned toward the Safe Zone. Beyond the barrier, people were repairing a wall whose legal value had been reduced because she had placed it under review. Inside, food moved without ration officers, patients were treated without title permission, and fourteen people remained protected by claims that legally should not exist. Her gaze stayed there longer than the audit required. Then she faced Jace.

"You have one remaining procedural option."

A white panel opened across the plaza.

MAIN QUEST UPDATED

CLASSIFICATION HEARING

Objective:

Establish a valid classification for Jace before civilian protection expires.

Subject: Jace.

Current Categories: CONFLICTING.

Civilian Protection: CONDITIONAL.

Territory Benefits: SUSPENDED.

Hearing Duration: OPEN.

Failure:

Safe Zone legal protection revoked.

Free Claim legitimacy review.

Territory challenge protections removed.

Reward:

SEALED UNTIL JUDGMENT.

Accept hearing?

Jace looked at Olivia. Then Avery. Neither told him what to choose. He selected ACCEPT.

The countdown stopped at 00:05:31.

SAFE ZONE CIVILIAN PROTECTION: CONDITIONAL.

CLASSIFICATION HEARING OPENED.

Five white words appeared in front of him.

ERROR.

HEIR.

WEAPON.

CLAIMANT.

STOLEN ASSET.

Eleanor White took her place on the other side of the table. The Safe Zone's legal status froze around them.

The System would now decide which of those five things Jace was.
