Chapter 148 — The Resonance Beyond the North

The ancient record remained in Aether's possession as the group finished examining the chamber beneath Frostveil. Its damaged inscriptions had revealed three important details: the boundary had been weakening, signals had once been detected beyond the fracture, and the Watchers had stopped responding to transmissions. The Northern Seal had also been unstable, although the record offered no explanation for its condition.

Aether wasn't satisfied with those fragments, but he wasn't going to force an answer from incomplete evidence.

"Vaelira, can you confirm whether the spatial ring is still active?" he asked.

Vaelira stood beside the outer platform, her Spatial Origin Crystal hovering above her palm. Its silver light passed across the interlocking rings, revealing faint currents beneath their dark surfaces.

"Yes, but barely. The mechanism is maintaining a minimal flow of energy. It isn't preparing to open a passage, and I can't identify a destination." She studied the crystal's reflection. "Something changed when the structure awakened earlier, though. The flow has become more stable in certain sections."

"Can you tell why?"

"Not yet. I'll need to compare these formations with the inscriptions we found."

Aether nodded. "Record everything. Don't try to repair the mechanism until we understand what the damaged sections control."

He inspected the central platform one final time. The ring was an opportunity, but activating it without knowing its destination could trap them in an unfamiliar spatial layer or destroy the only route back. They would return when they had enough information and the means to establish a safe connection.

Before leaving, Aether used his Origin Sense to examine the surrounding chamber. The fluctuations were weak, but one narrow current passed beneath the platform and continued toward the eastern wall. He followed it until it disappeared into the stone.

There was no concealed passage or obvious mechanism to investigate. Nevertheless, the current's direction was worth recording. It might indicate a connection to another part of the ancient structure.

Once the findings had been documented, the group began its ascent. Nyx stayed beside Aether, while Blackfang scouted ahead and Ironhide and Grimhorn remained within his shadow. Aria, Lyra, Seris, Sylvara, Elara, and Evelyn followed Vaelira through the narrow passage.

The journey gave Aether time to reconsider the recovered record.

The Watchers had existed before the station fell silent. Their disappearance from its transmissions didn't establish whether they had died, departed, or simply ceased communicating. Likewise, the Northern Seal could be connected to the spatial network without necessarily sharing its original purpose.

He had encountered the silver eye before, and the Origin Mark resonance in the northern region was too significant to ignore. Those earlier observations gave him a starting point, but not a conclusion.

When they finally emerged from the passage, Aether paused to examine the surrounding landscape. Snow covered the mountains, and the wind carried the faint scent of pine from the forest below. Nothing appeared unusual, yet his earlier experience had taught him not to judge an Origin Zone by its surface.

"Let's return to the territory," he said. "We'll compare the old observations with the new record before deciding where to investigate."

Lyra glanced toward the northern mountains. "You think the Watcher is connected to that station?"

"I think the evidence is worth comparing. That's all."

Aria adjusted Starfall on her back. "And if we find a connection?"

"Then we'll investigate it. But we won't assume the Watcher is hostile just because it has been observing us."

Nyx raised her head at the mention of the north. The markings on her forehead flickered once before fading. Aether noticed, but the reaction was too brief to establish anything.

He rested a hand against her head. "We'll find out soon enough."

The group continued toward the territory, reaching the base before the evening became too cold. The defensive formation remained intact, and there were no signs of intruders. Aether checked the perimeter before meeting the others inside the cave.

Gorn's territory had to remain secure while they pursued the northern mystery. Whatever lay beyond the mountains, Aether had no intention of neglecting the foundation he had spent so much effort building.

After confirming that the base was safe, he spread his earlier notes across a table. Vaelira placed a copy of the spatial inscriptions beside them, while Seris described what she had sensed in the chamber.

"The energy circulating through the ring wasn't ordinary life force," Seris explained. "It was more like a persistent current. I couldn't identify its source, but certain sections carried a faint pulse that repeated at regular intervals."

"Could it have been a signal?" Aria asked.

"Possibly. I couldn't determine whether it was intentional."

Aether looked at Vaelira. "Does that match anything in the spatial inscriptions?"

She compared the notes for several minutes before pointing to a series of symbols.

"This sequence describes the maintenance of a continuous spatial pathway. It doesn't mention communication directly, but the repeating energy pattern could have another function. We would need to examine the structure again to be certain."

Aether added the observation to his notes. One clue alone could be misleading, but several independent observations might eventually establish a reliable pattern.

He then reviewed the information from his earlier encounter with Kaelen and the silver-eyed presence. Powerful beasts had disappeared from the northern region without leaving corpses or signs of battle. Weaker beasts avoided the area, and the unknown Origin signature had resonated with Aether's own Origin Mark. Seris had also reported seeing the silver eye before joining the group.

Those details were more concrete than the damaged record, even if they still offered no explanation for the Watcher's purpose.

"Tomorrow, we'll examine the northern region from its outer boundary," Aether decided. "We'll compare the residual signatures with the ones recorded earlier. If we can reproduce the resonance, we may be able to determine whether the same presence is responsible."

"And if it appears?" Lyra asked.

"We observe first. If it attacks, we defend ourselves. If it doesn't, we won't provoke it without a reason."

Aria gave him a knowing look. "You've become more patient."

"I've become more selective about which risks are worth taking."

"That sounds better."

The conversation ended as the group began preparing for the next expedition. Aether checked their supplies and ensured that the formation remained stable. He also arranged for the territory's defenses to be maintained while they were away, unwilling to let their investigation create an unnecessary vulnerability.

Later that night, Aether sat alone near the cultivation chamber and opened his System.

He closed the interface and began cultivating. The breakthrough into Origin Tempering Stage 10 remained a priority, but the northern mystery could not be solved by increasing his strength alone.

As his Origin Energy circulated, he recalled the ancient inscription recovered beneath Frostveil. The boundary had weakened. Signals had been detected beyond the fracture. The Watchers had stopped responding.

Those statements described events, not their causes.

He needed to discover what had happened between them.

The following morning, Aether led Aria, Lyra, Seris, Vaelira, and Nyx toward the northern region. The others remained prepared to respond if the investigation revealed anything dangerous, while Blackfang moved ahead to scout the route.

They reached the area where Aether had previously detected the unknown Origin signature. The forest was unnaturally quiet, and the ground still carried faint marks that did not resemble ordinary animal tracks.

Aether crouched and examined the nearest impression. The residual energy was weaker than before, but it had not completely dissipated.

"Vaelira, check the spatial fluctuations. Seris, see whether you can distinguish the signature from ordinary life energy. Aria, watch the surroundings with Lyra."

The group immediately began working.

Vaelira held her crystal near the ground. Its light remained steady until she moved it toward the northern slope, where it flickered in response to a faint disturbance. Seris concentrated on the same area, searching for any sign of living energy.

"I can detect traces of life in the forest," Seris said, "but the stronger signature is different. It doesn't behave like an ordinary living creature's energy."

"That doesn't mean it's not a creature," Aether replied. "It means we haven't identified it."

He stepped closer to the disturbance and carefully released a small amount of Origin Energy. The mark within his body responded almost immediately.

A thin silver line appeared across the ground.

Vaelira's eyes widened. Her crystal had begun producing the same pulse, although its light was much weaker.

"Aether, stop releasing energy," she warned. "The fluctuation is responding to you."

He withdrew his energy. The silver line faded, but the crystal continued pulsing for several seconds before returning to normal.

Aether examined the ground again. This time, he had a measurable result. His Origin Mark and Vaelira's crystal had both responded to the same location, and the effect had ended when he stopped supplying energy.

It did not prove that the Watcher had created the disturbance, but it established that the northern signature interacted with his Origin energy in a repeatable way.

Then Nyx stepped forward.

Her forehead marking illuminated, and the silver line briefly reappeared beneath her paws. She turned toward a distant ridge and released a low growl.

Aether followed her gaze.

For a moment, he saw nothing beyond the trees and drifting mist. Then a small silver point appeared between two distant peaks.

It resembled the reflection of an eye.

The point remained visible for only a second before disappearing.

Aether did not pursue it. Instead, he memorized its location and checked the residual energy left behind. The signature was faint, but it matched the disturbance beneath his feet closely enough to warrant further investigation.

"That's enough for today," he said. "We have a direction and a repeatable response. Next time, we'll come prepared to trace the signal without provoking whatever is producing it."

Lyra looked toward the ridge. "You think it knows we're here?"

Aether glanced at Nyx, whose golden eyes remained fixed on the distant mountains.

"I think it knew long before we arrived."

He turned back toward the territory with his companions. The Watcher had revealed nothing about its identity or intentions, but the investigation had finally produced something more useful than another unexplained appearance.

Aether now had evidence that the northern phenomenon responded to his Origin Mark.

And if the connection was genuine, the next step was no longer simply to find the Watcher.

It was to understand why it had recognized him.
