Chapter 149 — The One Beyond the Ridge

The silver point vanished between the mountain peaks.

Aether continued watching the spot where it had appeared, his expression thoughtful. The northern region had already produced several unexplained phenomena, but this was the first time he had confirmed that the presence could detect one of his Origin Shadows.

That raised an important question.

Was it merely observing everything that entered its territory, or was it specifically interested in him?

“Blackfang,” Aether called.

The black-scaled wolf emerged from his shadow, its crimson eyes fixed on the ridge.

“Scout the lower slopes. If you find anything unusual, don't approach it. Observe from a distance and return immediately.”

Blackfang lowered its head before disappearing between the rocks.

Aether turned toward his companions. “We'll continue until we reach the area where the resonance becomes strongest. If anything changes, we retreat.”

Lyra raised an eyebrow. “You're actually planning to retreat if something happens?”

“Of course.”

“I was expecting you to say something about confronting whatever is hiding up there.”

“Confronting something without understanding its abilities is a good way to die.”

Aria smiled faintly. “At least he's learned that much.”

Aether gave her an amused look before leading the group uphill.

The climb became increasingly difficult as the terrain narrowed between steep cliffs. Snow covered the rocks, and the wind carried a faint metallic scent that Aether couldn't identify.

Vaelira held her Spatial Origin Crystal in front of her. Its silver surface flickered intermittently.

“The fluctuations are becoming stronger,” she said. “Something is affecting the spatial structure around us.”

“Can you locate the source?”

“Not precisely. The energy isn't traveling along a stable path. It's as though the surrounding space is responding to something beyond our immediate perception.”

Aether considered her explanation.

“Then we shouldn't assume the source is directly ahead. We follow the changes, not the direction they appear to indicate.”

Vaelira nodded. “Exactly.”

They continued until Seris suddenly stopped.

“Something is wrong here.”

She extended her Life Sense, allowing a faint green glow to spread around her hand.

“The energy is circulating, but I can't identify a living source. It's different from ordinary Origin Energy.”

“Could it belong to a creature?” Aria asked.

“Possibly. My Life Sense isn't designed to identify every form of existence.”

Aether examined the surrounding cliffs.

“Then we won't rule anything out.”

They advanced another hundred meters before reaching a narrow passage. Strange markings covered the rock walls, partially hidden beneath snow and mineral deposits.

Vaelira immediately approached the nearest pattern.

“These markings are artificial.”

She cleared away the snow without touching the stone itself. Several intersecting lines emerged, forming a geometric pattern that reminded Aether of the inscriptions inside the ancient spatial vault.

“Can you read them?” he asked.

“Not yet. Some lines appear to represent spatial relationships, but the pattern is incomplete. I would need to examine the entire structure before determining its purpose.”

Aether glanced at the surrounding walls.

“Record everything. We may find the missing portions farther ahead.”

As Vaelira documented the markings, Nyx suddenly moved closer to Aether.

Her golden eyes were fixed on the wall.

The marking on her forehead began to glow.

Aether felt a response from his own Origin Mark almost immediately.

This resonance was stronger than before.

A faint pulse passed through his Origin Core, followed by another that seemed to originate beyond the rock.

Aether's expression sharpened.

“Everyone, step back.”

He released a small amount of Origin Energy toward the wall.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the markings illuminated.

Silver light spread across the stone, connecting the geometric patterns into a continuous line that descended toward the ground. A low vibration passed through the passage.

Vaelira's Spatial Origin Crystal brightened.

“That's impossible.”

“What is?”

“The crystal is responding to the same spatial pattern I detected inside the vault. The underlying principles appear similar, although I can't confirm they're connected.”

Aether crouched beside the illuminated line.

“So there's a spatial structure underneath us.”

“Most likely,” Vaelira replied. “But I can't determine whether it's a chamber, a pathway, or something else.”

Before Aether could respond, the light suddenly changed.

The silver line split into two branches.

One continued beneath the ground.

The other extended upward along the wall, stopping directly in front of Nyx.

Her forehead marking flashed.

Aether immediately withdrew his Origin Energy.

The markings went dark.

Everyone remained silent.

Lyra looked between Nyx and the wall. “That wasn't a random reaction, was it?”

“No,” Aether replied. “The structure responded to my Origin Energy, but the second branch appeared when Nyx's marking reacted.”

Vaelira examined the darkened wall.

“It could be recognizing two separate signatures.”

“Or one signature interacting with another,” Seris added. “We don't have enough information to distinguish between those possibilities.”

Aether nodded.

Nyx had been connected to the northern mystery since their first encounter with the silver-eyed presence. Her reactions had never been ordinary fear. There had been something closer to recognition, although he still didn't know what she recognized.

He placed a hand against her head.

“Do you remember something?”

Nyx looked up at him.

Her golden eyes remained clear, but she gave no indication that she understood the question. The glow on her forehead faded.

Aether didn't press her.

Whatever the connection was, forcing it would accomplish nothing.

A low growl suddenly came from the entrance to the passage.

Ironhide emerged between the rocks, its armored body dusted with snow. It approached Aether and turned toward the narrow path beyond the markings.

“Blackfang?” Aether asked.

Ironhide released a rumbling sound.

Aether understood enough to know that Blackfang had found something.

“Let's go.”

They followed Ironhide through the passage and emerged onto a broad shelf overlooking the northern valley.

The view was striking.

Snow-covered peaks surrounded a vast depression in the mountains. Unlike the slopes they had crossed, the valley below contained almost no vegetation. Dark stone covered the ground, interrupted by several enormous formations that protruded from the snow.

Aether immediately noticed the absence of ordinary beast activity.

No tracks crossed the valley floor.

No birds circled overhead.

Even the distant movement of smaller creatures was absent.

Then he spotted Blackfang standing beside a broken stone formation.

The shadow wolf turned toward him, its crimson eyes alert.

Aether approached and followed its gaze.

Someone had been here.

A narrow trail of footprints crossed the snow, leading toward the center of the valley. They were shallow, evenly spaced, and partially covered by fresh snowfall.

Aether crouched to examine them.

“They're not from a beast.”

Aria studied the impressions. “Human?”

“Possibly. The spacing suggests a bipedal creature, but we can't determine its identity from this alone.”

Vaelira looked toward the distant formations.

“The spatial fluctuations are strongest near the center.”

Aether stood.

“Then that's where we'll begin.”

They descended cautiously, keeping the stone formations within sight. As they approached the center of the valley, Aether's Origin Sense detected a faint fluctuation.

He stopped.

The energy disappeared.

He took another step.

It returned.

This time, he could distinguish a pattern.

The energy wasn't simply spreading through the valley. It was responding to his movement.

Aether released a small pulse of Origin Energy.

The entire valley fell silent.

Then a voice sounded behind them.

“You have finally come far enough.”

Everyone turned.

A figure stood atop a distant stone formation.

Its body was concealed beneath a long, pale cloak. A narrow silver mask covered its face, leaving only a pair of luminous eyes visible.

Aether couldn't sense its cultivation.

He couldn't even determine whether the figure was human.

It looked directly at him.

“Origin Heir.”

Aether's expression remained calm, but his attention sharpened.

It knew his designation.

Not his name. Not his cultivation stage.

His designation.

The figure's gaze shifted briefly toward Nyx.

“And you brought the one who remembers.”

Nyx's golden eyes widened. A low, unfamiliar sound escaped her throat as the marking on her forehead began glowing again.

Aether stepped forward, placing himself slightly between Nyx and the distant figure.

“What do you mean by that?”

The figure didn't answer immediately.

Instead, it raised one hand.

Every stone formation in the valley illuminated with silver light.

Vaelira's Spatial Origin Crystal vibrated violently, forcing her to reinforce it with Origin Energy. Seris immediately moved closer to the others, while Aria and Lyra prepared their weapons.

Aether remained still.

The energy wasn't attacking them.

It was forming a pattern.

Lines of silver light connected the formations, creating an enormous geometric structure across the valley floor. At its center, directly beneath Aether's feet, a symbol appeared.

The same symbol that had responded to his Origin Mark inside the passage.

His System activated.

[Origin Mark Resonance: Intensifying]

[External Origin Signature: Confirmed]

[Spatial Fluctuation: Increasing]

[Source Classification: Unknown]

[Warning: Insufficient data for further analysis.]

Aether's eyes narrowed.

The response confirmed that the phenomenon was reacting to his Origin Mark, but it told him nothing about why. The figure's knowledge of the Origin Heir designation was another clue, though he had no reason to trust a stranger simply because it knew something about him.

The figure lowered its hand.

The silver light faded, leaving the valley unchanged.

“You have questions,” it said. “But the answers you seek cannot be given here.”

“Then tell me where they can.”

The figure turned toward the deepest part of the valley.

“Beyond the Northern Seal.”

Aether's expression hardened slightly.

The Northern Seal was no longer merely an unexplained name connected to the region. The figure had deliberately identified it as the next destination.

Yet that didn't prove the seal, the Watchers, and the spatial structures shared a single origin. He would need evidence before making that connection.

“Why should I trust you?” Aether asked.

“You shouldn't.”

The answer came without hesitation.

For a moment, neither side moved.

Then the figure's silver eyes settled on Aether once more.

“But if you wish to understand why the Origin Mark recognizes you, come to the seal when you are ready.”

Its form began dissolving into pale light.

Aether immediately activated his Origin Sense, attempting to track the fading energy signature.

For a brief instant, he detected it.

Then it vanished completely.

The valley returned to silence.

Lyra slowly lowered her weapon. “Well, that was certainly more direct than our previous encounters.”

Vaelira stared at the place where the figure had stood.

“It manipulated the entire spatial structure without producing a detectable energy buildup. I couldn't even identify the technique.”

Seris looked toward Nyx, who remained motionless beside Aether.

“Do you think Nyx understood what it said?”

“I don't know,” Aether replied.

He rested a hand against Nyx's head as the marking on her forehead gradually dimmed.

“But I intend to find out.”

Aether looked toward the deepest part of the valley.

The Northern Seal had finally become a concrete objective rather than another name buried among incomplete records. The mysterious figure had provided a direction, but not an explanation—and certainly not a reason to trust it.

That was enough for now.

He would return to the base, review everything they had discovered, and prepare properly before approaching the seal.

He also needed to reconsider what he knew about the Origin Heir designation. His private inheritance trial remained available, but its relationship to the northern phenomenon was still unknown. There was no reason to assume that pursuing one would automatically explain the other.

For now, the evidence pointed to a simpler conclusion: something in the northern region recognized his Origin Mark, and someone there knew more about the designation he carried.

The next time Aether met the silver-eyed figure, he intended to demand answers.

But first, he would learn everything he could about the Northern Seal.

Because the figure had revealed one important thing, even if it hadn't explained anything else.

Whatever waited beyond that seal knew who—or what—an Origin Heir was.

And Aether intended to discover why.
