Chapter 150 — The Path Beyond the Ninth Stage

The journey back to the base was quieter than usual.

Aether walked at the front of the group, reviewing everything they had discovered in the northern valley. The silver-eyed figure had known his designation, recognized his Origin Mark, and directed him toward the Northern Seal.

It had also reacted to Nyx.

Those facts were worth investigating, but they didn't establish how the mysteries were connected.

For now, Aether had a more immediate concern.

His cultivation.

He had spent considerable time at the ninth stage of the Origin Tempering Realm. His physique had reached 1.00% development, and his combat experience had improved considerably since his arrival in Frostveil. Yet he still hadn't broken through to the next stage.

That wasn't necessarily a problem.

He simply needed to determine what was holding him back.

“Aether.”

Vaelira's voice interrupted his thoughts.

He turned toward her.

“You've been unusually quiet since we left the valley.”

“I'm thinking about the next step.”

“The Northern Seal?”

“Eventually. First, I want to review our findings and strengthen our position. We shouldn't rush into another unknown structure just because someone told us to.”

Vaelira nodded in agreement.

“And your cultivation?”

Aether glanced at her.

“You noticed?”

“Your Origin Energy has been remarkably stable lately. But stability doesn't necessarily mean you've reached your limit.”

Aether smiled faintly.

“That's exactly what I'm trying to determine.”

By the time they reached the base, the afternoon light had begun fading behind the mountains.

Gorn was waiting near the outer perimeter.

The massive Ironback Ape watched their approach before releasing a low rumble. Several nearby beasts immediately moved aside, leaving the path clear.

Aether placed a hand against Gorn's thick arm.

“Everything quiet while we were gone?”

Gorn nodded.

“Good. Keep the perimeter secured. If anything approaches, alert us before engaging unless it's an immediate threat.”

The guardian responded with another rumble before returning to his position.

Inside the base, Aether gathered his companions and explained the encounter in the northern valley. He described the spatial formations, the silver-eyed figure, and its directions toward the Northern Seal.

He made one point particularly clear.

“We know that the figure recognizes my Origin Mark. We don't know why. Until we have more evidence, we're treating everything else as a possibility rather than a fact.”

Aria crossed her arms.

“And what about Nyx?”

“We'll investigate her reaction separately. I'm not going to assume the figure was telling the truth about her.”

Nyx, lying beside Aether's chair, raised her head at the sound of her name. He scratched behind one of her horns, and she settled down again.

Lyra leaned against the wall.

“So our next destination is the Northern Seal, but we're not going there immediately.”

“Correct.”

“And in the meantime?”

Aether looked toward the training grounds outside.

“I intend to make progress.”

Lyra grinned.

“Finally, something straightforward.”

“Cultivation isn't always straightforward.”

“It's still easier to understand than mysterious people wearing masks.”

“That depends on the cultivator.”

Her grin widened.

Aether left the others to discuss the expedition's preparations and walked toward the training area.

The evening air was cold, but the ground remained suitable for cultivation. He sat beneath a stone overhang, closed his eyes, and circulated his Origin Energy.

His private System appeared.

[Host: Aether Draven]

[Current Realm: Origin Tempering]

[Current Stage: 9]

[Origin Points: 975 / 1,600]

[Infinite Origin Physique Development: 1.00%]

[Physique Copy and Integration: Unlocked]

[Origin Shadow Authority: Advanced Resonance State]

Aether examined the information.

His ninth stage was stable. His Origin Energy circulated smoothly, and his physical foundation had improved through repeated combat.

However, the next breakthrough required more than accumulating energy.

He needed to understand the structure of his current foundation.

Aether began directing his Origin Energy through his body, examining how it moved between his muscles, bones, and Origin Core. Instead of forcing more energy into the process, he concentrated on identifying inefficiencies.

Minutes passed.

Then an hour.

Gradually, he noticed a subtle irregularity.

His Origin Energy circulation was stable, but some of the energy dispersed before completing its cycle. The loss was small enough to go unnoticed during ordinary cultivation, yet it became significant when he attempted to increase the density of his energy.

Aether adjusted his circulation.

The first attempt failed.

He tried again, changing the flow through his upper body before directing it toward his core.

This time, the energy traveled farther before dispersing.

Aether continued refining the process.

He wasn't gaining a new stage yet, but he was correcting a weakness in his foundation.

Eventually, the System displayed a notification.

[Origin Energy Circulation: Improved]

[Foundation Stability: Increased]

[Breakthrough Condition: Incomplete]

Aether opened his eyes.

“So that's the problem.”

He wasn't lacking potential or energy. His circulation needed further refinement before his foundation could support another stage.

He leaned back against the stone and considered the implications.

Most cultivators would probably focus on accumulating more energy at this point. That might work for a while, but he suspected it would only make the underlying inefficiency harder to correct.

His Infinite Origin Physique offered another possibility.

The conventional ninth stage was the normal limit for most cultivators. Exceptional geniuses could sometimes reach the tenth, while the rarest individuals with special physiques could advance to the eleventh.

But Aether's physique had a different potential.

The System had never explicitly explained what reaching the twelfth stage would require. He wasn't going to assume that possessing the potential meant the path would be easy.

Still, he could establish a principle for himself.

He wouldn't stop merely because he reached the limit others considered final.

He would continue developing his foundation until it could support the next stage.

Then he would do the same again.

Aether resumed cultivation.

This time, he focused on maintaining the improved circulation while gradually increasing the density of his Origin Energy. Whenever the flow became unstable, he corrected it instead of forcing it forward.

The process was slow, but the improvement was measurable.

When he finally stopped, the sky had darkened.

He opened his System once more.

[Origin Tempering Realm: Stage 9]

[Foundation Stability: Improved]

[Origin Points: 975 / 1,600]

[Next Breakthrough: Not Yet Achieved]

Aether looked at the final notification without disappointment.

He had expected progress, not an instant breakthrough.

Behind him, footsteps approached.

Aria stopped beside the training area, carrying two cups of warm tea.

“You're still here.”

Aether accepted one.

“Apparently.”

She sat beside him.

“Did you make progress?”

“Some. I found an inefficiency in my Origin Energy circulation. Correcting it should help me advance.”

“Should?”

“I'm not going to promise results before I've achieved them.”

Aria smiled.

“You haven't changed.”

“I've changed quite a bit.”

“Maybe. But you still become stubborn whenever you discover something interesting.”

Aether laughed quietly.

“That's a fair criticism.”

For a while, they sat together in comfortable silence, watching the lights appear across the base.

Aria eventually glanced at him.

“Are you worried about what the figure said?”

“About the Northern Seal?”

She nodded.

“I'm curious. That's different from being worried.”

“And if it turns out to be dangerous?”

“Then we'll prepare accordingly.”

Aether turned toward her.

“I'm not going to abandon our home just because another world might hold answers. We have people here, responsibilities, and things worth protecting. I'll investigate the seal when we're ready.”

Aria's expression softened.

“Good. I wanted to hear you say that.”

He nudged her shoulder lightly.

“Were you planning to lecture me otherwise?”

“Possibly.”

“Then I'm glad I saved you the trouble.”

She laughed, and the remaining tension between them faded.

After a while, Aria returned inside while Aether stayed beneath the overhang.

He looked toward the distant mountains.

The Northern Seal could wait a little longer. The spatial vault, the silver-eyed figure, and the unexplained reaction of his Origin Mark would eventually demand answers, but none of them required him to abandon his own progress.

His immediate goal was clear.

He would refine his foundation, increase his Origin Energy capacity, and reach the next stage through genuine cultivation.

The ninth stage was a limit for most cultivators.

For Aether, it was simply the point from which he would continue.

He closed his eyes and resumed circulating his Origin Energy.

Deep within his shadow, Blackfang stirred, while Ironhide and Grimhorn remained quiet.

The night settled over the base.

And beneath the familiar rhythm of cultivation, Aether's foundation continued to grow stronger, one deliberate refinement at a time.
