Chapter 101: The Footage Spreads

  • Next Chapter

Not the healer. Not the array. Just the patients.

Elara Voss walked out, flexing her previously intangible arm. Her face was wet with tears and she was smiling in a way that made the cameraman’s hands shake slightly.

A Guild delver named Torben Cross walked out on legs that had been useless for three years. He took seven steps, stopped, looked down at his feet like he was seeing them for the first time, and then walked back into the medical wing to hug the nearest nurse.

An instructor named Marcus Vey stood in the courtyard and breathed. Just breathed. Deep, full breaths that expanded both lungs. He stood there for two minutes, breathing, while students and staff watched in silence.

"He’s the one who ensured the footage focuses on patients," Serah said. "Helen Croft. She told me yesterday that if the recordings showed your face, the Crown would have a target. If they only show healed patients, the Crown has a problem."

"What kind of problem?"

"The kind where they can’t arrest you without looking like monsters."

The Crown’s bounty was technically still active. King Alistair had declared him an enemy of the state. But the footage showed a healer curing the incurable. The dissonance between "enemy of the state" and "the man who saved your daughter’s arm" was a political weapon that Serah and Helen had deliberately crafted.

"Smart," he said.

"Terrifying is the word I’d use." Serah scrolled through the feed. Comments were flooding in. Parents of wounded students expressing gratitude. Guild members demanding access. Politicians issuing careful statements. And underneath all of it, a growing current of public opinion that the Crown’s bounty was not just unenforceable but morally wrong.

"The King will respond," Alvian said.

"He already has."

She pulled up a second feed. The Crown’s official extranet channel had issued a statement thirty minutes ago. Alvian read it, parsing the political language for actual content.

"The Crown acknowledges the valuable humanitarian work being conducted at Ironclad Academy," the statement read. "In recognition of the ongoing medical emergency, the individual known as Alvian Vance is hereby granted temporary authorization to continue healing operations for humanitarian purposes. This authorization is contingent upon the individual submitting to Crown custody upon completion of emergency medical operations."

Serah snorted. "Temporary authorization. They’re pretending they gave you permission."

"The order is unenforceable," Alvian said. He had already run the scenarios. "If the Royal Guard tries to arrest me mid-healing, the public will tear them apart. The King knows this. He’s giving himself a face-saving exit while hoping I’ll comply voluntarily."

"Will you?"

"What do you think?"

"I think you’ll heal until the queue is empty and then disappear through a tunnel before anyone can serve a warrant."

"You know me well."

’Permanent custody. The King still thinks he can chain me. He’s offering permission like it’s a gift, when the permission is meaningless. The political momentum has already shifted. The bounty is dead. He just hasn’t admitted it yet.’

Tobias entered the hut with a crate of supplies. Food. Essence restoration potions. Bandages for the patients waiting outside the medical wing who needed basic care while they waited for the array. He set the crate down and caught the tail end of the extranet broadcast.

"The King’s playing both sides," the old scavenger said. "Giving you permission to continue while demanding you surrender after. He wants credit for the healing without actually letting you go."

"I know."

"You’re not going to surrender."

"No."

"Good." Tobias sat on his crate. "Because there are a hundred and twelve people outside the medical wing right now. I counted on my way in. Some of them have been waiting since last night. A woman from the border towns carried her son three hundred kilometers because she heard a rumor someone could fix his crystallized legs."

Alvian’s jaw tightened. Three hundred kilometers. A mother carrying her son. Because the system that was supposed to protect them had failed, and the only option left was a rumor about a boy with a trash Talent who could dissolve things and put them back together.

"I need to go," he said.

"Eat first," Serah said. "You’re not healing anyone on an empty stomach."

He ate. The bread was stale and the cheese was sharp and the fruit was something Tobias had acquired through channels that Alvian chose not to investigate. He ate all of it. His Essence climbed back toward full. His Talent pathways settled into operational baseline.

Then he walked to the Academy.

---

The queue outside the medical wing had grown overnight.

Alvian counted them as he passed. A hundred and twelve, as Tobias had said. Some on cots. Some on blankets spread on the ground. Some standing, leaning on crutches or family members, their wounds visible in the morning light. Crystalline patches on skin. Intangible limbs wrapped in cloth. Eyes that had seen too many healers who couldn’t help.

Helen Croft was at the entrance, directing triage with the efficiency of a woman who had commanded soldiers under fire. She saw Alvian approaching and her scarred jaw tightened.

"Day two. Thirty-one critical cases. More complex than yesterday. Two partial brain phasing cases that I’ve flagged as high-risk. One systemic crystallization in a twelve-year-old that has reached forty percent of body mass."

"Send in the first."

She nodded and turned to the queue. "Voss, Elara. Wait, you’re healed. Torben, you too. Next critical. Marsten, you’re up."

The first patient of day two was a woman in her fifties whose Talent pathways had been shattered by a Rift exposure decades ago. The pathways had healed wrong, scarred into configurations that prevented any Essence flow. She had been Talentless for twenty-three years.

Alvian placed his hands on her back, over the primary pathway junction. The array activated. Dissolution reached into the scarred pathways and broke them down. The dimensional memory in the central focus read her original pathway configuration from the cellular memory still stored in her tissue. Reformation rebuilt the pathways according to the original template.

Three minutes. The woman’s Essence pathways opened for the first time in twenty-three years. Her Talent, a C-Rank Stone Shaping ability that had been locked behind scar tissue since before Alvian was born, activated reflexively. The floor beneath her hands softened and reshaped into a perfect sphere.

She stared at the sphere in her palms. Then she started laughing. Then crying. Then both at the same time.

Patient two. Patient three. Patient four. The rhythm of day one re-established itself. Dissolution, template reading, reformation. Thirty seconds to five minutes per patient. Essence draining steadily, potions restoring it in bitter gulps.

The two partial brain phasing cases were the hardest. Neural tissue existed partially in standard space and partially in an adjacent dimension. The dissolution had to be precise to the molecular level, breaking dimensional bonds without destroying the delicate neural connections. the array amplifying his Clearwater resonance to a fineness that would have been impossible alone.

The first brain case took eleven minutes. The second took fourteen. Both patients woke up whole, their memories intact, their cognitive function unimpaired.

[The System notes that neural healing produced a significantly higher multiplier.]

The twelve-year-old with systemic crystallization was the last critical case of the day. Forty percent of his body had been converted to crystal. His legs were completely crystallized. His arms were halfway there. The crystallization was approaching his organs.

Alvian looked at the boy. Small. Pale. Scared. His parents stood behind him, their faces tight with the particular exhaustion of people who had been watching their child die for months.

’This is Martha. This is what Martha would have been if I hadn’t stolen the Tears.’

He placed his hands on the boy’s chest. The array activated at full power. All twelve pylons cascaded their amplification. The central focus blazed blue-white. Dissolution reached into the crystallized tissue and broke it down molecule by molecule. The dimensional memory read the boy’s original template. Reformation rebuilt healthy tissue where crystal had been.

Five minutes. The boy’s legs softened. His arms cleared. The crystalline patches receded from his organs. When Alvian removed his hands, the boy was whole. Cured.

The parents didn’t speak. The mother simply collapsed to her knees and pressed her forehead against her son’s chest, listening to a heartbeat that was no longer fighting crystal.

[MOLECULAR FORGE EVOLUTION TRIGGERED]

[WARNING: World Will monitoring spike detected.]

[STATUS: Creation-tier operation. Fate Enforcer deployment NOT triggered.]

[The World Will monitors creation but does not intervene against it.]

Alvian stared at the notification. Epic roll. 2,800x multiplier. The World Will had spiked but had not deployed Fate Enforcers. The System’s assessment was clear: creation-tier operations generated less dimensional hostility than probability manipulation.
