Chapter 100: Twenty-Three Healed

  • Next Chapter

Each healing followed the same pattern. Dissolution. Template reading. Reformation. Thirty seconds to five minutes depending on complexity. Each one left the patient whole in ways they had stopped believing was possible.

Serah documented everything. Her pad recorded dissolution depth, reformation pattern, Essence expenditure, Creation Wheel multiplier. She was building a database of creation-tier medical applications, the foundation of a field that didn’t exist yet but would.

"The multipliers are inconsistent," she said during a brief rest between patients six and seven. "Common rolls dominate. No Rare or above. The Creation Wheel seems to treat healing as lower-tier creation than forging."

"Because healing is application, not creation. I’m not making something new. I’m restoring something that existed."

"Interesting." She typed notes into her pad. "The System distinguishes between original creation and restoration. That implies a hierarchy of creation types."

"Or it implies the wheel is random and we’re pattern-matching."

"That too."

Alvian’s Essence dropped to 180 after the eighth patient. Serah appeared at his elbow with a potion vial.

"Drink."

"I can keep going."

"Your dissolution precision dropped three percent on patient seven. Drink."

He drank. The potion was still terrible. Wendell Pike had a talent for alchemy that somehow produced results that worked and tasted like dissolved boot leather. His Essence climbed back toward 220.

Patient nine. Patient ten. A woman whose dimensional scarring had spread to her heart, the organ tissue partially phased into adjacent space. This one was hard. The dissolution had to be precise, breaking down the displaced tissue without damaging the healthy cardiac muscle around it. Alvian’s INT 214 guided the process molecule by molecule, his awareness narrowing to the atomic level, the array amplifying his Clearwater resonance to surgical precision.

Four minutes. The woman’s heart solidified. Whole. Functional. She pressed her hand to her chest and felt a heartbeat that wasn’t fighting dimensional corruption for the first time in six months.

"Break," Serah said. It was not a request.

Alvian sat on the floor beside the central focus. The crystal sphere pulsed with his heartbeat, steady and blue and alive. Twenty-three patients remained in the queue. His Essence was at 140. The potion had helped but the sustained output was cumulative.

Tobias appeared at the chamber entrance with food. Real food, not Undercity nutrition strips. Bread. Cheese. Some kind of fruit that Alvian didn’t recognize but that tasted like something the world had forgotten existed.

"The line goes past the courtyard," Tobias said. "Word’s spreading. Parents of students. Guild members. Commoners from the merchant district. All of them with injuries nobody else can fix."

"How many?"

"Hundred. Maybe more. Helen’s doing triage outside. She’s turned away about thirty walking wounded, told them to come back tomorrow. The critical cases are being prioritized."

Alvian ate. The food helped. His Essence climbed slowly back toward 180. Serah sat beside him, close enough that her SunFire warmth pressed against his Clearwater chill, and showed him the data she had been compiling.

"Twenty-three patients healed today. Total Creation EXP approximately fifteen thousand. Your Molecular Forge proficiency is climbing steadily. At this rate, you’ll hit Master threshold within the week."

"The Master threshold was the condition for evolution."

"Yes. And evolution requires a multiplier roll above Rare." She looked at him. "An Epic roll would trigger World Will escalation."

"I know."

"The creation wheel has been staying in Common and Uncommon. If that pattern holds, you’re safe. But if a complex healing triggers an Epic..."

"Then I deal with the consequences."

She was quiet for a moment. The pylons hummed around them. The central focus pulsed.

"You could stop," she said. "The array is structurally complete. You’ve proven it works. Twenty-three people are healed who would have died or been permanently disabled. That’s enough to shift the political calculus. The Crown can’t arrest you now without causing a revolt."

"And the other hundred people in the queue?"

"They’ll find other solutions."

"No they won’t. You know they won’t. There are no other solutions. That’s why they’re in the queue."

Serah didn’t argue. She knew he was right. The pre-Cataclysm understanding of dimensional injuries had been lost. The post-Cataclysm medical infrastructure couldn’t treat them. The healing array was the only option for people whose wounds existed partially in other dimensions.

Alvian stood. His Essence was at 178. Not full, but enough.

"Send in patient twenty-four."

Serah looked at him for a long moment. Something passed across her expression that was not quite concern and not quite something else. Then she nodded and walked to the chamber entrance.

"Twenty-four," she called out. "Dimensional scarring, left shoulder."

A man walked in. Older. Grey hair. The weathered face of someone who had spent decades in physical labor. His left arm hung useless at his side, the shoulder swollen and discolored where dimensional energy had fused the joint.

Alvian placed his hands on the swollen shoulder. The array activated. The pylons hummed. The focus blazed.

And the line kept growing.

---

By the end of the first day, twenty-three patients had been healed. The queue had grown to over a hundred. Helen Croft had organized a formal triage system, with patients categorized by severity and prognosis. Critical cases were scheduled for tomorrow. Stable cases were told to come back in three days. Walking wounded were politely but firmly turned away until the crisis cases were handled.

Alvian collapsed in Tobias’s hut at midnight. His Essence was at forty-three. His hands were shaking. His Talent pathways ached in ways that EXP allocation couldn’t fix. He had healed twenty-three people and the line had grown longer.

Serah sat beside him on the floor, her back against the wall, her pad displaying the day’s data. She had fallen into a rhythm of documentation that was almost meditative, her scientific mind finding patterns in the chaos.

"Your Molecular Forge proficiency jumped significantly today," she said. "The sustained healing work is pushing it faster than the construction did. You’re approaching Master threshold."

"Good."

"Tomorrow will be harder. The remaining critical cases are more complex. Cardiac involvement. Neural pathway damage. Two cases of partial brain phasing that I’m not sure even the array can handle."

"Then we handle them one at a time."

"You should sleep."

"I know."

He didn’t sleep immediately. He sat on the floor and stared at the ceiling and thought about the woman whose heart he had healed. She had pressed her hand to her chest and felt a normal heartbeat for the first time in six months. The expression on her face was something Alvian had never seen directed at him before.

Not fear. Not awe. Not the calculating assessment of someone measuring his value as an asset.

Gratitude. Simple, human, overwhelming gratitude.

’Twenty-three people. Twenty-three people who would have died or been permanently broken. And there are a hundred more waiting.’

’The King wants me arrested. The Crown wants me controlled. And a hundred people are sleeping outside the medical wing because they heard a rumor that someone can fix what nobody else can fix.’

’I’m not a hero. I’m just a boy with a cheat system who figured out that dissolution isn’t just destruction. It’s the first step of putting things back together.’

He closed his eyes. Sleep came fast and hard and dreamless.

The extranet picked up the story at 6 AM on day two.

Alvian was eating bread in Tobias’s hut when Serah’s communication crystal buzzed with a notification from Hendricks Cole. The black market dealer had become the informal intelligence coordinator of the Undercity network, and his morning briefings had become part of the routine.

"Turn on the extranet," Hendricks’s voice crackled through the crystal. "Channel seven. Hurry."

Serah activated her pad. The holographic display flickered, then stabilized on a news feed. The headline scrolled across the bottom in glowing text:

ACADEMY HEALER SOLVES DIMENSIONAL INJURIES

The footage was careful. Professional. Someone with a steady hand and a good magitech recorder had positioned themselves at the medical wing entrance and captured the patients leaving.
