Chapter 102: Two Hundred in Line

  • Next Chapter

’Building things is safer than breaking probability. The World Will tolerates creation. It doesn’t tolerate cheating.’

’That’s the key. That’s the strategy. I can develop power through creation without facing cosmic consequences.’

The evolution notification waited. Molecular Forge had reached Master proficiency and was ready to evolve. But the evolution would require processing, and there were still patients in the queue.

He dismissed the notification. Evolution later. Healing now.

Serah appeared at his elbow with another potion. "Your Essence is at sixty-seven. Drink."

He drank. The queue continued. Patient by patient. Healing by healing. The line shrank by ones and twos while the extranet broadcast footage of people walking out whole.

By the end of day two, thirty-one patients had been healed. The queue had shrunk to eighty. Serah’s database had grown to fifty-four documented cases. Her circuitry pad was running out of storage.

"You need to rest," she said as the last patient of the day walked out on legs that had been dimensionally scarred for a decade.

"I know."

"Your Molecular Forge proficiency just hit Master threshold. The evolution is waiting."

"I know."

"You’re going to ignore it until tomorrow, aren’t you?"

"I’m going to rest tonight and deal with it tomorrow. The evolution will require focus. The healing requires focus. I can’t do both at the same time."

Serah closed her pad. She looked at him with that expression again, the one that was not quite concern and not quite something else.

"The King’s statement said you need to submit to Crown custody after emergency operations are complete."

"I saw."

"What counts as complete?"

"When the queue is empty. Or when the Crown sends someone to define ’emergency’ in a way that’s convenient for them."

"And if they send the Royal Guard?"

Alvian looked at the healing array. The pylons hummed. The central focus pulsed with his heartbeat. The copper channels glowed with flowing energy. It was alive, in every way that mattered. A self-sustaining creation that would continue healing people whether he was there or not.

"Then they’ll have to explain to a hundred grateful patients why they arrested the man who cured them."

Serah was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded. "I’ll document everything tonight. If the Crown moves against you, the footage will be on every extranet feed within the hour."

"Good."

He walked out of the medical wing into the evening air. The Academy courtyard was quiet. Stars were visible through the holes in the sky where the Calamity Rift had torn reality apart. The same holes he had caused.

’Healer or destroyer. Creator or calamity. The Crown doesn’t know which one I am. The public doesn’t know which one I am.’

’Maybe I don’t know either.’

Day three started before the sun did.

Alvian hadn’t slept. The evolution notification blinked in his peripheral vision every time he closed his eyes, a small golden icon pulsing with patient urgency that he kept dismissing. The queue outside the medical wing had grown overnight and people were waiting and the evolution could wait a few more hours.

Serah found him at the entrance at five in the morning, watching the line that stretched through the courtyard and out into the street.

"Two hundred and twelve," she said. She had counted. "Some have been here since midnight. A family came from the eastern border. Three hundred kilometers. Their daughter’s legs are crystallized."

"I know."

"You should process the evolution."

"After the morning shift."

"Alvian."

"After."

She handed him a bread roll and an Essence potion without another word. He ate. He drank. He grimaced at the potion’s taste, which was somewhere between dissolved boot leather and regret. Wendell Pike’s alchemy remained consistent in its results and consistent in its awfulness.

The pylons hummed inside the chamber. The central focus pulsed with its own rhythm now, the biological-crystalline hybrid maintaining itself without his input. The array was ready. It had been ready since yesterday. He was the bottleneck.

Helen Croft had the triage list organized by severity. "Forty-seven critical cases today. The rest are stable but deteriorating. If you maintain yesterday’s pace, we clear the critical list by evening."

"Send in the first."

The first patient of day three was a Guild delver whose spine had been partially phased by a Rift exposure thirty years ago. He hadn’t walked since. The man was fifty-three, weathered, with the particular stillness of someone who had long ago stopped expecting anything to change.

Alvian placed his hands on the man’s back. The array activated. The twelve pylons cascaded their amplification, copper channels blazing, the central focus flaring blue-white. Dissolution reached into the dimensionally displaced spinal tissue and broke it down molecule by molecule. The dimensional memory in the crystal read the original template from the man’s cellular structure. Reformation followed, rebuilding healthy neural pathways where dimensional scar tissue had blocked them for three decades.

Four minutes. The man’s legs twitched. Then moved. Then carried him to a standing position with the shaking uncertainty of someone relearning what walking meant.

He stared at his feet. Then at Alvian. Then at his feet again.

"I can feel the floor," he said. His voice cracked.

[Healing: Chronic spinal dimensional displacement]

[Creation EXP +50]

[Creation Wheel: Silver-Bronze-Silver, 22X]

[Creation EXP: 1,100]

The second patient. The third. The rhythm established itself again. Dissolution, template reading, reformation. Thirty seconds for simple cases. Five minutes for complex ones. His Essence drained and climbed and drained again as potions bridged the gaps between patients.

The cases were harder today. Long-standing injuries that had scarred over decades, dimensional corruption that had settled into the body’s structure like roots in soil. Each healing required deeper dissolution, more careful reformation, more sustained focus.

Patient fifteen was a woman whose Talent pathways had been shattered by a Guild disciplinary action gone wrong. The pathways hadn’t just scarred. They had healed into configurations that actively fought Essence flow, like pipes bent backwards. Alvian had to dissolve and rebuild the entire network from the primary junction outward.

Patient twenty-three was a boy, maybe ten, whose lungs had been phased by a minor Rift that opened in his family’s basement. He had been breathing partially in adjacent space for two years. The dissolution had to be precise enough to break dimensional bonds without collapsing the alveoli.

Serah appeared with another potion. "Your Essence is at fifty-two. Drink."

"I can finish this case first."

"Drink now. The boy’s lungs aren’t going anywhere."

He drank. The boy’s lungs completed their reformation. The child took a breath that filled both lungs completely and his eyes went wide with the simple miracle of breathing without effort.

By noon, twenty-nine patients had been healed. The queue had barely shrunk. More people arrived every hour, drawn by the extranet footage that showed the healed walking out of the medical wing whole and crying and alive.

The evolution notification pulsed again. Alvian dismissed it.

Patient thirty was a former Royal Guard who had been discharged after a dimensional beast severed his arm and phased the stump. The stump existed in two dimensions simultaneously, preventing any prosthetic attachment. Alvian dissolved the displaced tissue and reformed the stump according to the man’s original template, creating a clean amputation point that could accept a conventional prosthetic.

"Why didn’t you regrow the arm?" Serah asked afterward, reviewing the data on her pad.

"Molecular Forge can’t create living tissue. It can only reformation existing tissue. To regrow an arm, I’d need to create new biological material from base molecules."

"Could the evolution change that?"

He looked at her. The notification pulsed again. He didn’t dismiss it this time.

"Maybe."

’Molecular Forge evolves and it could create living tissue. Not just heal what exists but make what doesn’t. The man’s arm, regrown from nothing. The boy’s lungs, created fresh. Martha’s crystallized organs, rebuilt from scratch.’

’The evolution has been waiting. I’ve been putting it off because the queue keeps growing. But the queue will keep growing forever if I don’t get stronger.’

’The tools I have aren’t enough anymore.’

"Send in the next patient," he said. "I’ll process the evolution tonight."

Serah nodded. She didn’t argue. She had been waiting for him to reach this conclusion on his own.

The afternoon shift was harder. His Essence regeneration couldn’t keep pace with the sustained output, even with potions. His hands shook. His Talent pathways ached with the particular fatigue of sustained fine work. Each healing required more focus, more precision, more will.

Patient forty was a woman whose heart had been partially crystallized. The dissolution had to break down crystal without damaging cardiac tissue, a difference of molecular bonds so fine that Alvian’s awareness narrowed to individual atoms.

Sweat beaded on his forehead. His jaw clenched.
