I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 69: Night of the Ashen Fang
The storm over Sector 9 had turned into a cold, ceaseless deluge. Rain lashed against the rusted corrugated steel walls of Warehouse 22, an abandoned grain storage facility near the edge of the shipping channel. Inside, the air smelled of wet rust, rot, and stagnant seawater.
Six silhouettes moved through the gloom with absolute silence.
The members of The Ashen Fang were elite B-Tier rogue hunters, trained to operate without noisy power armor or glowing mana rifles. They wore matte-black thermal-dampening suits, their weapons coated in anti-reflective shadow paint. Two held heavy crossbows loaded with mana-disrupting alloy bolts; two held dark-steel shortswords; one carried a high-frequency wire trap; and Julian Drake, Viper, stood near the central loading bay, his dual stilettos resting loosely in his palms.
"Sensors are clean, Viper," the squad’s scout whispered into his throat mic, adjusting his optical goggles. "No movement in a two-block radius. No heat signatures, no mana fluctuations. Either our target isn’t in Sector 9, or he’s already moved on."
"He’s here," Drake said softly, his pale face partially illuminated by the faint red glow of his optic visor. "Sterling’s intel confirmed a large black-market hardware liquidation happened nearby forty-eight hours ago. A guy standing six-foot-seven doesn’t just disappear into thin air without leaving a paper trail. Set the wire traps across the main doorways. If he steps inside, we bleed his joints first, then ask questions."
The wire-specialist knelt by the heavy iron doors, stringing razor-thin, monomolecular wire across the entrance.
From thirty feet above them, resting silently on a high steel girder in the shadows of the warehouse ceiling, Raphael watched the six assassins work.
He was utterly motionless. His Sovereign’s Veil remained active at absolute maximum compression, sealing every trace of his existence inside his skin. He didn’t even breathe aloud. To the thermal goggles and high-tech acoustic sensors worn by The Ashen Fang squad, Raphael was nothing more than part of the cold steel architecture.
His eyes mapped the squad’s positions in a fraction of a second. Six B-Tier rogue assets. Tactical formation: high-spread containment. Flawed assumptions: they believe their darkness is a weapon.
Raphael reached back silently with his right hand, his fingers wrapping around the hilt of his parrying dagger. He didn’t draw his primary longsword; against a squad of mortal assassins who relied on thermal goggles and wire traps, four feet of adamantine steel was excessive.
He stepped off the thirty-foot steel girder and dropped, allowing gravity to carry his broad frame down into the shadows behind the squad’s rear guard- the crossbow specialist.
THUD.
The heavy, water-soaked boots hit the concrete floor without making a sound higher than the falling rain outside.
Before the crossbow specialist could turn his head, Raphael’s left gauntlet reached out from the dark like a vice of cold iron, clamping firmly over the assassin’s throat and crushing his vocal cords instantly. In the same fluid motion, Raphael drove the curved parrying dagger cleanly through the back of the rogue’s vest, piercing his heart before he could pull his sidearm trigger.
ZIP.
Raphael absorbed the falling corpse directly into his spatial storage inventory, leaving zero blood and zero physical evidence on the floor.
’Five remaining.’
Raphael took two silent steps to his left, blending effortlessly into the pitch-black shadows beneath an overturned forklift.
The wire-specialist, finishing his trap at the main doorway, tapped his throat-mic. "Kael, cover the north window. Kael? Report."
Silence answered over the comms channel, causing Drake’s eyes to narrow instantly beneath his visor. "Kael, check in."
But there was no answer.
"Form up! Staggered defense!" Drake hissed, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper as he drew both black-steel stilettos. "We have a breach! Scan the rafters!"
The four remaining assassins snapped into a tight back-to-back circle, their visors sweeping the ceiling beams and shadowy corners. Thermal cameras clicked wildly, but the digital displays returned zero heat sources, zero mana signatures, zero movement.
"There’s nothing there, Viper!" the wire-specialist stammered, panic lacing his voice as he raised his sidearm. "Thermal reads completely dead! The room is empty!"
"Shut up and keep your eyes open!" Drake growled.
From the dark corner five feet directly behind the wire-specialist, Raphael spoke.
"He’s right." Raphael’s deep voice echoed through the quiet warehouse, carrying an icy, terrifying resonance that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The room is empty."
ZIP.
Raphael executed Shadow-Step Flash, making his towering frame materialize directly inside the squad’s tight formation.
Before the assassins could pull their triggers or swing their blades, Raphael’s left arm swept out in a brutal, horizontal arc. The obsidian knuckles of his Sovereign’s Shadow-Grip Gauntlet slammed into the side of the wire-specialist’s helmet, shattering the ballistic visor and snapping his neck with a sickening CRACK.
Without breaking momentum, Raphael spun on his heel, his curved parrying dagger flashing like an arc of dark lightning.
ZIP-ZIP!
The two blade-specialists standing beside Drake didn’t even have time to raise their shortswords. Raphael’s dagger executed two lightning-fast thrusts, penetrating their throat guards with surgical precision. Both men collapsed to the concrete, clutching their severed windpipes as dark blood pooled beneath them.
’Three seconds. Four elite B-Tier assassins dead.’
Julian Drake, Viper, scrambled backward across the wet floor in absolute terror, his confidence completely shattered. He slammed his back against a concrete support pillar, holding his twin stilettos out with wild, trembling hands as he stared up at the shadow towering before him.
Raphael stepped out of the gloom into the faint beam of moonlight filtering through the shattered skylight.
Standing six-foot-seven, clad in his dark coat, his hood shading his sharp features while his luminous silver eyes burned through the dark like twin stars, he looked less like an unawakened civilian and more like a god of death incarnate.
"W-What the hell are you...?!" Drake stammered, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps as he backed up against the pillar. "No mana signature... no heat... how are you moving like that?!"
Raphael didn’t answer. He flicked his parrying dagger, sending a thin droplet of dark blood flying off the matte-black blade onto the concrete floor. He stepped closer, his heavy shadow completely swallowing Drake.
"Marcus Sterling paid you fifty million credits to find me," Raphael said, his voice cold, steady, and irrefutable. "Where is Vanguard Coalition’s off-grid mana reserve?"
Drake swallowed hard, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped his stilettos. "I... I don’t know what you’re talking about! We’re just an independent contractor team! We don’t have access to corporate vaults!"
Raphael raised his left gauntlet, grabbing Drake by the throat and lifting the full-grown, two-hundred-pound assassin eight inches off the floor with a single arm. He squeezed slightly, the obsidian knuckles grinding against Drake’s cervical vertebrae.
"Wrong answer," Raphael whispered.
"A-ALT-5!" Drake choked out, his eyes bulging as he clawed desperately at Raphael’s iron grip. "Sector 1... beneath the Old Federal Mint... subterranean vault ALT-5! The private encryption keys are on the black credit drive in my coat pocket! I swear to God, that’s everything! Don’t kill me!"
Raphael reached into Drake’s coat with his free hand, retrieving the black encrypted credit drive containing the fifty-million-credit advance and the private vault keys. He slipped the drive securely inside his own coat.
"Thank you for your cooperation," Raphael said calmly.
CRACK.
With a simple, effortless twitch of his gauntleted fingers, Raphael snapped Drake’s neck. He dropped the lifeless body onto the concrete floor, pulled out his parrying dagger, and resheathed it across his back.
With a single thought, he opened his spatial inventory, absorbing all six corpses and their equipment from the warehouse floor, leaving behind zero physical evidence of the battle.
Raphael walked out of Warehouse 22 into the falling rain of Sector 9, pulling his hood low over his face as he reached into his coat to touch the encrypted drive.
"Vanessa," Raphael spoke through his soul-bond.
"I am listening, Sovereign," her silk-like voice echoed in his mind.
"Decrypt Subterranean Vault ALT-5 in Sector 1," Raphael ordered, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips beneath the rain. "It’s time to collect Marcus Sterling’s real payment."
Over the past few days, Vanessa had studied the technology of humans, and with her powerful learning ability, she’d become accustomed to a lot of it. Decryption, although not easy, wasn’t difficult either for her.
The only thing bothering her was when Raphael would allow her to fight alongside him. But she knew the time was coming soon. For now, she would continue helping him from the shadows, her true home.
