I Summon Female Knights
Chapter 68: Ashes of Vanguard
The torrential downpour that pounded the glass monoliths of Sector 1 did nothing to wash away the stifling tension inside Vanguard Coalition’s executive penthouse.
Seated behind a mahogany desk overlooking the neon-soaked skyline of Jiston was Chief Executive Director Marcus Sterling. His knuckles were pale as he stared at the red financial ticker scrolling across his private terminal.
The public failure in Sector 3 had wiped out thirty percent of Vanguard’s market capitalization in under six hours. Stockholders were panicking, the Bureau had launched a formal audit into their private security licenses, and three of their prime commercial mining contracts had just been suspended by the city council.
"Director Sterling," a smooth, gravelly voice spoke from the shadowed corner of the office. "You’re burning daylight, and my time is extraordinarily expensive."
Sterling turned his bloodshot eyes toward the shadow.
Sitting in a leather armchair, nursing a glass of century-old whiskey, was a pale man with a jagged scar running from his ear down to his collarbone. He wore tailored grey body armor under an expensive coat, with two thin, black-steel stilettos strapped to his thighs.
This was Julian Drake, codename Viper, the leader of The Ashen Fang, an elite, off-grid international syndicate of B-Tier rogue hunters who specialized in corporate assassinations, wet-work, and unrecorded dungeon raids.
"The Bureau is watching every move Vanguard makes, Drake," Sterling growled, slamming his fist onto the desk. "We lost an entire strike squad, two armored transports, and our reputation in Sector 3 because of that... that ghost. The media calls him the ’Unknown Wanderer.’ Captain Vale thinks he’s an S-Rank spatial anomaly. I think he’s an unregistered mercenary hired by one of my rivals to destroy this company."
Drake let out a cold, raspy laugh. "A single man catching a three-ton petrified ironwood club with his bare palm isn’t an ’unregistered mercenary,’ Sterling. That’s a monster... but monsters still have throats, and throats can still be cut if you hit them from the dark."
"I don’t care how you do it," Sterling said, pushing an encrypted black credit chip across the desk. "There are fifty million credits on that drive. Another hundred million when you bring me his head or his spatial storage ring. He was last seen in Sector 9 near the industrial docks. Find him, put him down, and make sure nobody ever hears from him again."
Drake picked up the chip, slipping it into his coat pocket with a cold, predatory smirk. "Sector 9 is a slum of rusted steel and ghost docks. He won’t be coming out alive."
...
Ten miles away, fifty feet beneath the rain-slicked streets of Sector 9, the subterranean vault of The Iron Spire was quiet, save for the soft, continuous hum of the liquid-cooled quantum servers.
Raphael stood before the central holographic matrix, his shoulders squared as he watched the glowing streams of data scrolling across the air. Beside him, Vanessa held her dark relic-staff anchored against the black marble floor, her violet eyes assessing the real-time intelligence feed.
On the screen before them was a crystal-clear, decrypted audio feed from Marcus Sterling’s penthouse office, accompanied by facial recognition profiles for all six members of The Ashen Fang.

"How delightfully predictable," Vanessa murmured, her voice echoing in the vault as a dark, graceful smile touched her lips. "Corporate men are so accustomed to solving their problems with coin and shadowy violence. They truly believe six rogue hunters can threaten a Sovereign."
Raphael didn’t smile. His eyes traced the routes marked across Sector 9’s map as the six red icons representing The Ashen Fang squad began moving toward the industrial docks via separate unmonitored vehicles.
"Sterling is desperate," Raphael said smoothly, his deep baritone carrying absolute composure. "His company is bleeding money, his license is under audit, and he thinks he can salvage his empire by putting a knife in my back. He doesn’t realize he just handed me the key to his entire off-grid network."
"Shall I deploy the Abyssal Warmaster and the Shadow-Guards to intercept them at the docks, my Lord?" Vanessa asked, raising her staff. "They can crush the squad before they even set foot inside the sector."
"No," Raphael replied, raising his hand to stop her. "A show of brute force by castle guardians will only draw Captain Vale’s strike teams straight to Sector 9. This requires surgical precision."
Raphael turned away from the holographic matrix and walked toward the weapons rack resting beside his obsidian throne. He unhooked the Vanguard of the Eclipse set, and strapped the dual scabbard harness securely across his back.
He pulled his dark coat over his broad shoulders, drawing the deep hood low over his messy hair until his face was entirely shaded in shadow, save for the subtle silver glow of his eyes.
"The Ashen Fang built their reputation on hunting from the shadows," Raphael said quietly, flexing his fingers inside his Sovereign’s Shadow-Grip Gauntlets. "It’s time to show them who owns the dark."
Driven by his intent, his Sovereign’s Veil activated at maximum density.
A shimmering wave of silvery-violet spatial mana washed over his broad frame before compressing completely beneath his skin. Instantly, his crushing presence dropped to absolute zero. To every mana-radar, diagnostic sensor, and spatial tracker on Earth, he was entirely invisible- a ghost walking through the physical world.
"Vanessa, keep the quantum servers locked onto Sterling’s private communication channels," Raphael instructed, stepping toward the shimmering doorway of the Waypoint Gate. "When I finish with Drake’s squad, I want his private vault coordinates decrypted and ready."
"As you command, Sovereign," Vanessa bowed deeply, her dark silk robes sweeping across the stone floor. "May the shadows hunt for you tonight."
Raphael stepped across the threshold of the Waypoint Gate, vanishing into the spatial ripple as he crossed the boundary into the foggy, rain-soaked shadows of Sector 9’s abandoned shipping yards.
The trap was set, but the hunters had no idea they were the ones walking into the cage.
