Mr. Shaw could only do his best to remain calm before turning to consult his boss on how to handle the matter.

"I’ve thought it through. And thank you for how well you’ve treated me."

’There has never been a moment when I’ve seen things more clearly than right now!’ Evelyn Grant thought.

’I see my own position clearly, and I see exactly what others think of me.’

Even when Julian Sterling had her thrown in jail, her hatred was for him alone. She never blamed his parents or the rest of the Sterling family.

Now that she saw the truth, her personality wouldn’t allow her to let things continue this way.

Not Julian Sterling, and not Ryan Sterling. She was done with both of them.

"You... you can’t..." Mr. Shaw stood there, stunned and at a loss for words.

Of course, he wanted Evelyn Grant to change her mind, but she was so adamant. He couldn’t come up with a good reason to stop her on the spot.

"I need to get back to work. I will complete the tasks you’ve assigned me properly. I won’t leave the firm in a bind."

Frowning, Mr. Shaw quickly left Evelyn Grant’s office.

He couldn’t even wait until he was back in his own office. The moment the elevator doors opened to the hallway, he immediately dialed Ryan Sterling’s number, not even bothering to send a text first as he usually would.

"Speak."

Ryan Sterling seemed to have sensed something; it was clear from his tone.

"Ms. Grant is resigning. And by the looks of it, she’s absolutely determined! I tried to talk her out of it, but she has no intention of changing her mind. What do we do now?"

"Knowing her personality, once she found out the firm was opened for her... yes, resigning is the expected reaction."

Ryan Sterling still understood Evelyn Grant best.

It might have seemed like Evelyn Grant was closer to her "big brother" Julian Sterling growing up, but whenever she was truly in trouble, the one who saw her through the hard times was always Ryan Sterling.

That’s why he knew her personality so well.

"So, what’s the plan now?"

"Is Evelyn Grant leaving today?"

"No, not today! Ms. Grant has a strong work ethic. She said she’ll finish the tasks I assigned her before she officially resigns."

There was a slight pause on Ryan Sterling’s end. Then, in a low voice, he asked, "And the tasks you assigned her... are they easy to complete?"

Mr. Shaw answered without a second thought. "They’re all simple tasks! Wasn’t that your instruction? You told me not to overwork Ms. Grant, so I even transferred the cases she was handling to other lawyers!"

"If they can be transferred to others... then they can certainly be transferred back."

"..." Mr. Shaw was a smart man; he understood his boss’s meaning instantly. "Ah! I get it! As long as Ms. Grant has unfinished work at the firm, she can’t resign!"

’That’s our boss for you!’

’He found a way to keep Ms. Grant just like that!’

Ryan Sterling’s voice was low, sounding as if he hadn’t slept all night. "My idea can only buy some time. After that, you’re on your own."

"Don’t you worry about that! I was just caught off guard and couldn’t think of an excuse. As long as she’s still at the firm, I can definitely find an endless stream of things that need her attention!" Mr. Shaw paused, then corrected himself. "No, things that *only* she can do!"
