I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 175: Evelyn Grant Sees Through It
Chapter 175: Chapter 175: Evelyn Grant Sees Through It
"So the firm is closed today. You should go home!"
Mr. Shaw could finally state his ultimate goal.
Before he could even breathe a sigh of relief, Evelyn Grant suddenly asked, "Mr. Shaw, if I hadn’t been feeling unwell today, would the firm still have had a power outage?"
"..." Mr. Shaw froze, denying it instinctively. "O-of course not! Why would you think that?"
Evelyn Grant’s lips twitched into a smile. Her face was pale, and her voice was tinged with weariness. "It just seems like every time something comes up and I can’t make it to the firm on time, or when I need a day off, the firm just so happens to have an issue and needs to close."
"Is that so?" He laughed guiltily, adopting the air of a boss to allay Evelyn Grant’s suspicions. "That can only be a coincidence! You’ve seen how many people we have at this firm. Think of how much money we’d lose by closing for just one day!"
"So, the person behind the scenes isn’t short on cash, is he."
’Behind the scenes?’
"What person behind the scenes? I don’t know what you’re talking about."
Evelyn Grant smiled. "It’s fine if you don’t understand. It’s enough that I do. And please, pass a message on to him for me: what’s over is over. I’m grateful, but he doesn’t need to do this anymore. I won’t appreciate it."
"..." Mr. Shaw could just imagine how his own boss would lose his composure upon hearing those words.
No one knew better than him the place Evelyn Grant held in Mr. Sterling’s heart.
"I’m not taking today off. I’m staying at the firm to finish checking the remaining documents and submit them."
"But there’s no power!"
"If there’s no power, I’ll just use my phone’s flashlight and go through them bit by bit." Evelyn Grant took a deep breath, trying to appear less haggard and weak. "And when I’m done, I’m resigning."
’Resign?!’
’That’s unacceptable!’
"Why would you resign? Is there something wrong with our firm?" Mr. Shaw grew anxious and quickly pressed for a reason.
"Our firm is wonderful."
’How could a law firm opened specifically for me not be wonderful?’
"If it’s so wonderful, why do you want to leave?" ’If she leaves, will this firm even exist anymore?’
Mr. Shaw had worked so hard to keep it running; he really didn’t want to see his efforts go down the drain.
"Because I don’t want to be monitored, and I certainly don’t need anyone’s self-righteous ’kindness’."
After this incident, Evelyn Grant would have to be a fool not to understand.
’Julian Sterling... he was a purely selfish person. He’d abandoned his wife without a second thought to pursue his so-called ’true love.’ Then, the day he regretted it, he came back begging and scraping, confident that because he was handsome, with an impeccable physique and career, anyone would forgive him—no matter how great the mistake!’
’And Ryan Sterling...?’
’Evelyn Grant had once believed he was a guiding light—the antidote to a love she thought was completely dead. He had appeared just before it was truly gone forever.’
’Like a savior, he had extended a hand to her, telling her not to think about anything, that she only needed to believe in him.’
’But in the end, once those hidden layers were peeled back, wasn’t this all just Ryan Sterling’s script?’
’Every act he performed was so perfect.’
’He could weigh the pros and cons and always come out unscathed.’
’He played Evelyn Grant so well that she truly believed him again—believed him without a single hesitation.’
’She had really had enough. She was so tired.’
"Ms. Grant, go home and rest for a few days. Think it over! Don’t just throw the word ’resignation’ around. It makes you sound unprofessional."
