Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Cutting the Power

A short while later, Ryan Sterling replied.

[Asking me? You figure out a way to get her to go home and rest.]

’Figure it out myself?’

This really stumped Mr. Shaw.

He knew his boss’s temper and just how stubborn Evelyn Grant was. Being stuck in the middle like this was an impossible task!

But doing nothing wasn’t an option.

Mr. Shaw clutched his phone, returned to his office, and checked the firm’s remaining tasks and client appointments for the day. Then... gritting his teeth, he stood up and headed for the building’s management office on their floor.

"I need you to cut the power to the firm’s floor in a little bit. If anyone asks, tell them it’s a power outage or a system failure. Understand?"

The staff member at the management office looked completely baffled. "Uh... why? If the law firm has no electricity, how is anyone supposed to work?"

"That’s the point. The only way they’ll take a day off is if they can’t work."

"..."

Mr. Shaw sighed, gave a dismissive wave, and walked away.

But just as he stepped into the elevator, the overhead light flickered a few times, then went out with a POP!

The elevator doors hadn’t even opened, and just like that, Mr. Shaw was trapped inside!

"This..."

Not knowing whether to laugh or cry, he suppressed his temper and quickly called the management office.

"Why did you cut the power so fast?"

"Cut the power? This is a wiring malfunction!"

The staff member obediently recited the lines Mr. Shaw had given them.

Mr. Shaw pressed a hand to his forehead. "I’m the one who just told you to cut the power! Turn it back on now, and then cut it again in five minutes!"

"..."

He was utterly exasperated.

But on second thought, he found it a little funny.

Soon, the power was restored, and all the electrical systems came back online.

This time, afraid he’d get trapped again, Mr. Shaw exited the elevator and took the stairs back to the office.

"Mr. Shaw, the power just went out!"

He had just reached the entrance when one of the firm’s lawyers came to report the "problem" to him.

Mr. Shaw nodded, a look of resignation on his face. "I know. There’s probably an issue with the wiring. I’ll have the management office look into it. By the way, do you have to appear in court today?"

The other lawyer nodded. "Yes, I do."

"Then you should head out now. Don’t be late."

"I won’t be, no need to rush! I still have a few hours."

"You should still go now. The power’s out at the firm, so you can’t work anyway. Go wait at the courthouse and spend some extra time talking with your client."

Mr. Shaw walked away as soon as he finished speaking.

His main reason for doing this was to minimize the firm’s losses.

After all, every time he "cut the power," a significant amount of the firm’s work was delayed.

To keep Evelyn Grant from getting suspicious, he made sure every "day off" was a real one. Lawyers at her same level were also given leave, lest one of them accidentally let the secret slip.

But this practice severely impacted the firm’s workflow.

"Sigh."

Mr. Shaw sighed. "The world of the rich is just different."

’Look at our boss,’ he thought. ’He couldn’t care less! The only person he cares about is Ms. Grant! As long as she’s doing well, there’s nothing Mr. Sterling won’t do for her.’

Mr. Shaw walked up to Evelyn Grant’s office door and knocked. "Ms. Grant, did the power go out in your office just now?"

Evelyn Grant looked up from a pile of documents, forcing a faint smile. "I’m not sure. I was reviewing case files, so I didn’t notice."

To avoid making any errors during her review, she always worked with printouts, going through them line by line.

"..."

Mr. Shaw really had to hand it to her.

"Did the power go out?" Evelyn Grant finally processed his question and reached for her computer. "Huh? It really won’t turn on."
