I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 170: This Answer Is Meaningless
Chapter 170: Chapter 170: This Answer Is Meaningless
"Evelyn Grant, I wanted you. That was the only thing on my mind that day! Call me despicable, call me a schemer, I don’t care—I just wanted to make you my woman! I was sick of you being with my brother. I wanted to make it so you couldn’t go back to him."
Ryan Sterling knew Evelyn Grant’s character. If she slept with him, there was no way she could ever get back together with Julian Sterling.
At the time, he really hadn’t considered anything else. He hadn’t wanted to.
As for that, he would accept whatever judgment she passed on him.
"So you knew that once I was taken away, I would be detained."
"...Yes."
After hearing that, Evelyn Grant didn’t want to ask anything else.
There was no need.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, composing herself for a long moment before finally concluding the conversation.
"Regardless, I am grateful you came forward with that evidence to save me. Without you, it would have been incredibly difficult for me to get out of that mess."
She might never have found any evidence to help herself.
It wasn’t just her looking for it. Julian Sterling was also desperately hiding any evidence that could hurt Jane Jacobs!
’In that case, what could a powerless, unconnected junior lawyer like me possibly do?’
’To say I was a lamb to the slaughter wouldn’t be an exaggeration.’
’Even when Ryan Sterling intervened, he had to resort to some extreme measures to get those chat logs.’
’I knew, with absolute certainty, that I could never have obtained them myself.’
’So, it was shameful of him to manipulate my feelings.’
’But he had saved me. That was a fact.’
Evelyn Grant had always been one to separate feelings from debts of gratitude.
"You... what do you mean?" Her words were clearly the prelude to a farewell.
Ryan Sterling wasn’t a fool; he understood.
"I don’t want to talk about the past anymore. It’s pointless! Now that the baby is gone, there’s... no reason for us to be together anymore. Let’s just go back to our own lives." Evelyn Grant rose, not looking at him, simply saying her piece. "Goodbye."
She immediately turned to leave.
Before he could think, Ryan Sterling’s hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.
As he stood, the lobby lights behind him threw his shadow over Evelyn Grant, completely enveloping her.
"Something else?"
"Yes." Ryan Sterling’s lips thinned. "You’re... you’re not going to ask me about the text message?"
Evelyn Grant’s lips curled. "No."
’There’s no need.’
"The text was actually—"
"I already said I’m not asking. That means I don’t want to know."
Evelyn Grant cut him off coldly. She looked down, pulled her hand free, and stepped back to put some distance between herself and Ryan Sterling. "Whatever the case, I don’t want to be involved in any of this anymore."
’She felt like as long as she was involved with the Sterling family, with any of them, she was made to look like a fool!’
’Maybe this is what they mean by the chasm between social classes.’
’The Sterlings... every single one of them was a powerful figure, looking down from on high, easily deciding the fate of an ordinary person like me.’
Evelyn Grant hated it, and she refused to go on like this.
’It was all just so... exhausting.’
"How can you give up on me so easily?" Ryan Sterling looked at her in disbelief.
’I’ve done so much, and in the end... I’m still not the one she chooses?’
"It’s over. The answer doesn’t matter anymore."
"I think it does matter! I at least deserve to know why... even after all this... it’s still not me?"
’Happiness had been right there, in his grasp!’
