Chapter 169: Chapter 169: I Don’t Have to Touch You

To Ryan Sterling, Evelyn Grant always came first. She was the most important person to him.

When she saw the message, Evelyn Grant almost dropped her phone.

She wanted to reply that she wasn’t asleep, but after a moment’s hesitation, she put the phone back down.

So much had happened in the past few days, so much that Evelyn Grant didn’t know how to react, let alone how to face Ryan Sterling.

She just stared at the ceiling, dazed, for a long, long time—so long that it was almost dawn before she finally replied to Ryan Sterling.

[Not asleep.]

[Let’s meet.]

Ryan Sterling’s reply came back instantly, as if he’d been waiting by his phone the whole time.

When Evelyn Grant had sent her message, she had already considered the possibility of meeting, so she didn’t hesitate.

[Okay.]

[Where are you? I’ll come to you.] He knew Evelyn Grant had just had surgery and didn’t want her to travel back and forth.

After Evelyn Grant sent her hotel’s location, she got up and quickly freshened herself up.

No matter how awful she felt, she didn’t want to face Ryan Sterling looking disheveled.

Although, Evelyn Grant couldn’t quite explain why.

’Maybe... I have a feeling this is the last time we’ll see each other as husband and wife.’

...

When Ryan Sterling arrived at the hotel, Evelyn Grant was already waiting in the lobby.

No matter how hard she tried to hide her pallor, he immediately noticed her weakness.

"Let’s sit and talk."

Ryan Sterling walked over and instinctively pulled out a chair for her.

It was something he had grown accustomed to doing during their time living together.

The gesture was so natural it made them seem like an old married couple.

"Mm."

Evelyn Grant didn’t politely refuse. She simply nodded.

She didn’t look up at Ryan Sterling, her head slightly lowered, her thoughts unreadable.

The two of them fell into a long, mutual silence before Ryan Sterling finally spoke.

"The child..."

"Is gone." Evelyn Grant tried to sound as cold as possible when she said it.

It was the last line of defense for her dignity.

Since she already knew he was acting—and from a script he’d written himself, no less—the only form of resistance Evelyn Grant had left was to appear unfazed.

’Otherwise...’

’I’d just be a pawn in his play, pathetically stupid.’

"Evelyn Grant, you promised me you would keep this child."

"So because I didn’t follow your script, you’re here to question me?"

’Script?’

"What are you talking about?"

"What am I talking about? Don’t you know perfectly well?" Evelyn Grant suddenly lifted her eyes to look at him. "That day at the Sterling Estate, when you had just returned to the country, you already had the evidence to counter Jane Jacobs, didn’t you?"

Ryan Sterling’s expression froze.

After a few seconds, he nodded. "Yes."

On his way back to the country, Ryan Sterling had already had someone investigate and find almost everything!

He had ordered his subordinates to find evidence proving Evelyn Grant’s innocence, no matter the cost.

"Then... that day, you didn’t have to touch me."

Faced with her pleas, he could have told her that he already had the evidence, that she didn’t need to beg him to get her pregnant to escape the death penalty.

"Yes, I didn’t have to touch you."

Ryan Sterling had to admit it; he had wanted Evelyn Grant back then, which was why he’d hidden the fact he had the evidence.

He wanted Evelyn Grant, and he wanted to use this situation to make her completely give up on Julian Sterling!

He had no defense.

"So, was it fun for you, watching me hide and conceal things afterward?"
