I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 168: Getting into Character Again
Chapter 168: Chapter 168: Getting into Character Again
In an instant, Ryan Sterling understood everything.
That was the call Evelyn Grant had made to verify if the text message was real.
She’d gotten her answer, which was why she hadn’t said a word.
"Because of this... she had an abortion?"
Ryan Sterling asked, his voice strained.
His voice had gone hoarse in an instant.
"That’s right! Of course, Evelyn Grant never wanted the baby in the first place. She only felt compelled to keep it out of guilt toward you! Now, she feels you’ve wronged her too, which makes you even for that time you saved her life! Since the slate is clean, she saw no reason to keep the baby."
"..."
"That’s why I said it. You thought you’d won, but you have nothing! Evelyn Grant... she never loved you. Not for a second."
Those last words were like a vicious slap across Ryan Sterling’s face.
The punch Julian Sterling had taken only left him with a bit of blood and a moment of pain.
But Ryan Sterling... he couldn’t even get back on his feet.
...
After leaving Julian Sterling’s apartment, Evelyn Grant suddenly realized she had nowhere to go.
Under the circumstances, she couldn’t go to her mother’s—her mom would notice something was wrong. And she certainly couldn’t go back to Ryan Sterling’s apartment...
She walked alone through the streets late at night. The wind was chilly, and everything around her was quiet.
She couldn’t even remember the last time she’d felt like this, or what her state of mind had been then. All she knew was that once again, someone had turned her entire world upside down.
It was laughable, really.
’The last time I was hurt by Julian Sterling, I made a promise to myself: I would never, ever believe in love again!’
’But then Ryan Sterling put on his little show, and I fell for it all over again!’
’Pathetic. Truly pathetic!’
’It turned out there was no such thing as love in this world after all.’
’I was too stupid, too naive. I mistakenly thought that just by eliminating Julian Sterling—the wrong answer—I would be fine.’
With nowhere else to go, Evelyn Grant eventually found a hotel by the side of the road and checked in.
On her phone, a message came in from Mr. Shaw, asking why she hadn’t come to work that day.
"I’m so sorry, Mr. Shaw. I’m having some health issues and not feeling well. I’ll get my work done tomorrow."
"Not feeling well? That’s serious! You should go to the hospital and get it checked out. I’ll give you a few days off. Don’t come back to work until you’re feeling better!"
Mr. Shaw might overwork anyone else, but he wouldn’t dare do it to Evelyn Grant. When he heard it was a health issue, he was terrified she might actually try to come to work the next day!
If she collapsed at the firm, it would be on him.
"There’s no need. It’s nothing too serious. Thank you for your concern."
’Now that I have no love... and no child... I can’t afford to lose my job on top of everything else!’
Evelyn Grant put down her phone and lay on the large hotel bed, feeling exhausted.
It wasn’t just physical exhaustion, but an emotional one...
And that was the most terrifying kind.
Suddenly,
her phone chimed.
Evelyn Grant assumed it was another reply from Mr. Shaw, so she didn’t look right away.
When she finally remembered to check, she saw it was from Ryan Sterling.
"Are you asleep?"
Even though he was desperate to see Evelyn Grant, to ask her about so many things, to say so much, Ryan Sterling still chose to first ask if she was resting.
If she was asleep, he could bear the agony for a few more hours and wait until she woke up to ask.
Even though the baby was... gone, and even though Ryan Sterling didn’t know the full story, he knew one thing for sure: as someone who had just undergone a procedure, Evelyn Grant’s body had been harmed. That was a certainty.
