I Am Zeus
Chapter 409: Working Map
The secondary station remained quiet for less than a whole cycle.
Zeus had scarcely reached the agreed-on edge of the platform when Ayin-Rash appeared without announcement. The veiled figure did not come with attendants or House color, only a record projection that unfolded over the central table like an incision of light.
"You felt a continuity scar on the transfer route," Ayin-Rash observed. "That was not random. Residual continuity leaves tracks where it is strong enough. I have matched part of those tracks."
Tohu was already present when Jehovah’s supervision mark deepened over the station a breath later. Sera came last, meaning she had been within view of the station from the start.
Athena studied the projection. "Is this a location?"
"It is a working map," Ayin-Rash replied. "Not an identity. Not an address. Continuity residue from the extraction window left nodes through contested transit layers and judgment-scarred zones. Most are dead. Some still answer. A few are being watched."
The map unfolded in jagged lines. Some crossed Continuum traffic. Others threaded the remnants of law-forged endings. One of the lines matched the side current Zeus had sensed during relocation. Another ended further out, in territory not claimed by any of the nine.
Poseidon narrowed his eyes at the largest gap in the pattern. "This looks less like a road and more like someone trying not to be followed."
"Exactly," Ayin-Rash said. "That is why you get a working map and not a name."
Zeus traced the nodes until the residual force under his skin began to favor one cluster in particular. He did not invest it. He simply noted the pull. "That one."
Ayin-Rash magnified the cluster. "Judgment-scarred zone. Closed-route waste. Continuity residue is stronger there than at the transfer scar you passed."
Tohu’s gaze sharpened. "Then that is where instruction and search meet. If the carrier’s force answers the node, we learn more through controlled approach than through sealed theory."
Jehovah’s voice filtered through supervision law, a cutting precision. "Hard limits remain. No open pursuit into unmapped layers. No residual flare for bait. Any approach falls under approved movement and threshold watch."
Sera’s smile was slow and small. "And you will need eyes that understand extraction traffic. Fortunately for this board, I still have standing."
Hermes regarded her with a flat expression. "You mean you want observers on the route."
"I mean I am not letting continuity threads attached to my old claim travel without me," Sera said. "Call it observers if it soothes your vanity."
Hades’ heavy-lipped stare lingered on the judgment-scarred cluster. "If these nodes are attached to the window that saved us while the rest of our world was dying, then someone has already decided which places are important. I want to see those places."
Odin tapped one of the less bright marks with the butt of Gungnir. "Several of these are thinning as we speak. The map is alive. Delay will result in loss of mapped elements."
Ayin-Rash shifted the projection again. One of the edge nodes flickered, then lost definition. "Correct. At least one mapped point is being scrubbed."
The table went silent.
Athena’s voice was taut. "Scrubbed by who?"
"Erasure-aligned interest," Ayin-Rash said. "Not always Black Star in open armor. Sometimes a cleaner removal. Someone is clearing continuity traces faster than I can record them."
Sun Wukong rested both hands on his staff. "So the people who want us absent are not only harvesting bodies. They are hunting the road that proves we should still exist."
"Yes," Ayin-Rash said.
Zeus felt the residual force pulling him toward the judgment-scarred cluster again, stronger now that the map had taken shape. He clenched his hand until the pull steadied. "Then we move before more of the map dies."
Tohu gave a single-nodded agreement. "Controlled approach to the strongest answering node. I handle residual thresholds. The rest of you hold formation. No side excursions."
Jehovah’s mark pressed harder against the station. "Approved to the first scar zone only. If the scrub reaches it before your arrival, you withdraw. If the carrier’s force exceeds threshold, you withdraw. If Sera’s observers compromise command lines, she loses route access."
Sera’s gaze darkened. "Noted."
Loki surveyed the map’s fading edges with a thin smile. "A hunt for places being erased while we travel. Much preferable to waiting in some hall for the next committee to assemble."
Kratos tested the chains at his wrists. "When?"
"Shortly," Zeus said.
Ayin-Rash collapsed most of the projection, leaving only the first active cluster in pale illumination. "I will continue matching what remains. Note this: every node you reach may contain memory, direction or danger. Continuity residue does not clarify its purpose. It only preserves what it is built to keep."
After the higher beings had finalized route seals and watch conditions, the nine stood together over the last remaining mark of light.
Poseidon broke the tension. "If that node is already on a scrub list, we may find only teeth waiting for us."
"Then we shall be ready for teeth," Athena said.
Hades’ green light wavered once. "And if it reveals more of the ending we already lived?"
Zeus studied the mark. "Then we take the truth. The map is here because something wanted these pieces to remain. I want to know what those pieces are."
Beyond the station, Continuum traffic flowed in dense, layered currents. Somewhere in those currents, continuity nodes were being expurgated one at a time. Somewhere behind those expurgations waited the same willpower that had sent erasure teams after living survivors.
The working map hovered for one final moment before Ayin-Rash sealed it into a portable mark and placed it under joint watch.
They had a direction now.
Not an answer.
A direction that could still fail them if they drew too slowly.
