I Am Zeus

Chapter 410: The Scrubbed Node

They departed the secondary node under approved transit before the map could suffer another demerit.

The channel to the judgment-scarred cluster was a narrower relocation channel than the first, and significantly less orderly in its transit traffic. Tohu rode front again, Jehovah’s supervision marking their passage in sealed thresholds rather than an overt escort. Sera’s observers maintained rear distance, close enough to observe, not close enough to appear deferential.

The nine moved in tight formation, conversation minimal. The closer they came to the node, the more Zeus felt the residual force pressing forward against his ribs, not wild, but watchful.

Athena noted it. "Still controlled?"

"Still controlled." Zeus’ voice was rougher than he intended. "It knows this place better than I do."

Hermes surveyed the side cuts. "Or what it used to be."

When the channel opened at last, the node stood waiting in the form of a ruined court of pale stone and dead route-script. It should have carried memory. Ayin-Rash’s map marked it as among the stronger continuity points remaining. Instead, the court was hollowed, the air thin in a manner unrelated to altitude. Continuity residue hung in broken strips, the manner of a garment torn around a wound.

Tohu raised one hand, halting them at the edge. "Recently scrubbed."

Poseidon’s grip tightened on the trident. "Black Star?"

Odin was the first to move into the broken court, Gungnir level, one eye narrowed. "Black Star work is blunt. This has blunt elements, yes. But there are also finer cuts. Someone has cleaned after them, or before them, with more delicate tools."

Hades knelt at a patch of floor where the stone had been smoothed away into bare law. Green light from his hand revealed no remnants of dead souls or lingering heat from combat, only the emptiness of absence. "They did not simply kill a place. They have scrubbed away what that place was meant to remember."

Sera’s voice rang out from the observers’ rear line. "Then you are late."

Athena did not turn. "Or on time to witness the shape of the theft."

Zeus stepped forward into the ruined court.

The residual force within him surged high enough that Tohu immediately turned. "Threshold."

"I have it," Zeus rasped through his teeth.

He held the force back, but not past it. In the scrubbed center, it found the fragments of continuity the cleaners had missed, the tiny threads of continuity still caught in the seams of the court. For a moment Zeus used those fragments as a hand finds edges in the dark.

The image came then.

He was no longer in the broken court, but looking out over a dying lower sky from its edge. Oceans were folding in, Olympus marks shattering like weak glass, countless lives going dark in neat waves of judgment. In the midst of that ending a narrow channel opened with impossible accuracy, and nine signatures were pulled through it before the channel sealed again. The angle was wrong for his own memory, for the way he had seen the end from within. He had not seen the nine, as individuals, but as chosen points of light against the dark of dissolution.

He heard no voice, but understood intent.

Chosen.

Then the image broke away.

Zeus staggered, Kratos catching his arm hard enough to hold him up. Athena was already in front of him, eyes sharp.

"What did you see?" she asked.

Zeus forced air back into his lungs. "The end of our world. Not from within it. From above. Someone observed the judgment and opened the window from the outside. I saw us taken through it."

Hades was still. "Did you see Persephone?"

Zeus met his brother’s gaze and hated the answer. "No. Only the nine."

The silence afterward was ugly and sincere.

Tohu examined the center where Zeus had touched the continuity fragments. His expression was more grim than usual. "Continuity residue has left a survivor-view rather than full record. The scrub has removed the stable memory. What is left is only what a living carrier can pull up."

Jehovah’s supervision mark hovered over the ruined court. "Which means the scrub was intentional. Someone does not want the extraction window reconstructed."

Loki surveyed the empty stone. "Black Star would burn a place. This place has been edited."

Sun Wukong tapped his staff against the floor, listening to the sound it made before it died away. "So we have at least two cleaners. One loud. One careful."

Hermes redrew the exit points out of habit. "And both of them got here before us."

Poseidon looked to Zeus. "Can you pull more?"

"Without crossing threshold, not safely." Zeus’ fingers curled against his ribs. "If I force it in a scrubbed node I may simply announce our presence to whomever did the cleaning."

Athena inclined her head. "Then we take what we have. The window was external. The selection was deliberate. The map is being hunted as much as we are."

Sera finally drew close enough to regard the empty court rather than the nine. "If continuity memory is being scrubbed node by node, your working map has an enemy with a head start. That alters route value. Nodes ahead may turn out to be traps as often as answers."

Tohu’ gave her a long look. "Or necessary risks."

"Those are not mutually exclusive," Sera said.

Zeus remained in the center of the scrubbed node until the last echo of borrowed vision left his fingertips. He still felt the shape of that outside view, the sureness of the channel that had saved nine lives and left the rest of a universe to die. Seed, not salvage, the old record language had suggested. In the middle of a hollowed-out memory court, that seemed more promise than warning.

"We are not random survivors," he said. "Not to the one who opened the window. Not to the ones attempting to clear the road. That is sufficient to warrant caution in advance."

Odin turned toward the distant lane out of the court. "Then we should move soon. This node is clean now. Clean places attract second passes."

They departed the ruined court in formation, subdued compared to their arrival. Behind them, the emptiness held almost nothing. Ahead, the working map still had its marks, each vulnerable to being wiped away before they reached them.

Zeus moved with the residual force low and even under his skin.

He had seen their salvation from the wrong side of the sky.

He did not yet know who had made the choice.

But the choice had left a road.

And someone powerful was in the process of closing it forever.
