I Am Zeus

Chapter 405: Attack on the Claim

  • Next Chapter

The initial erasure strike came hammering on the outer hall, a blade-keen edge meant only for endings.

Black Star operatives filed through the breach in disciplined lines, their armor marked with termination law rather than capture codes. Surrender was not an option. Binding was not the goal. Every movement was designed to excise coherent signatures from the field, and leave only refuse in their wake. One acolyte near the far wall went down without a sound, her frame folding inward like a rejected proposition.

"Formation!" Zeus barked.

The nine set themselves with taut discipline. Athena struck from the left with spear already carving through the first wave. Kratos’ chains cleaved a brutal arc at the center. Poseidon drove the earth with an undercurrent of force that shattered the second line’s footing. Hades spread a green-black pressure wide enough to slow the encroaching erasure marks. Odin’s spear bit through a helmet joint. Hermes dragged an operative off-kilter just long enough for Sun Wukong to rip the body sideways with the staff. Loki slipped through a gap and sliced a command charm from an officer’s wrist before it could fully deploy.

Tohu and Jehovah were not without their own contributions. Tohu carved a bloody runnel through the left breach team, his residual authority sharp enough to make the air taste of old storms. Jehovah laid hard containment walls in even strokes, channeling the attackers into thinner bands where number could be overcome by will. Sera fought not for dominance, but for the privilege of survival, picking her moments with surgical precision to keep her own retreat viable.

It was not enough to make the attack seem small.

A Black Star captain bore deeper termination script drove straight for Zeus, ignoring Tohu and Jehovah alike to take up position near the residual carrier. The choice was not without meaning. Someone wanted this force extinguished, and the people bound to it with it.

Zeus met the captain head-on.

The first pass would have felled him, were it not for the sudden bite of continuum-adapted erasure law. His shoulder seared as something within him answered, a writhing mass of chaos ready to erupt in kind. For a dangerous heartbeat he let the sensation well, the way it had in the practice room.

"Control it," Athena’s voice cut through the haze. "Don’t give them a flare to expend."

Instead he forced the energy into a tight line rather than a broadstroke. Not perfect, but sufficient. The chaos laced the thrust of his power, shearing through the captain’s forward guard and reducing the termination marks to meaningless fragments. Kratos took up the same attacker from the flank and ended the exchange with a brutal burst of force. The captain fell, and did not rise again.

"Left flank!" Hermes warned.

A second team had driven through a side corridor, trying to circle around Hades and Poseidon. Hades spun with a bestial snarl and drew two of them into an impaling field of death-pressure. Poseidon split the floor beneath the third and sent him hurtling into the collapse. Wukong leapt a broken bench and scattered the rest with wide staff strikes, muttering beneath his breath in the way that always meant the engagement had suited him.

"These ones don’t want ownership," Loki noted, a streak of blood marred his cheek. "They want absence."

"I gathered as much," Tohu snarled, hurling another attacker through a failing wall.

Jehovah sealed the breach for a heartbeat, white law holding fast over the ruined sigils. It was not enough. Neither was the next push, as fresh Black Star signatures pressed against the hall from outside, denser and more insistent. Malakhiel’s earlier projection had been purged entirely in the opening exchange, a fact that spoke volumes about the way shared family crisis tended to turn to personal detachment in the presence of erasure teams.

A second termination officer took up position against Zeus, driving him backward toward the cracked center of the hall. The chaos surged again, stronger this time. Zeus could feel that distant third awareness brushing the edge, waiting to see if the carrier would break now.

He hated that more than he hated the assault.

"Not yours," he growled beneath his breath, and forced the energy into another controlled expenditure.

The officer’s armor split along the breastbone. Athena’s spear took up the opening. Odin finished the work. Zeus steadied himself against the aftershock.

The hall around them was already shattered and illuminated. Casualties lay strewn across the floor, those of Black Star and those of the nine in roughly equal measure. Sera finally committed herself long enough to cut down an operative who had been setting up a broad erasure field near the rear exit, then pulled back to reorient on her own most viable escape. Tohu took a lucky shot across his ribs that would have killed a lesser man and answered with a crushing burst of force to silence the attacker. Jehovah held the integrity of the claim lines with unrelenting will, but even he had been forced to make hard choices. Then, as quickly as the engagement had reached its climax, the remaining Black Star operatives broke contact.

In order, and with an almost mournful quality to their departure. One rear officer laid a final termination seal against the hall, only for Jehovah’s countering law to negate it, and the survivors withdrew the same path they had taken to the engagement. The pressure eased in uneven waves until the hall stood cracked and smoldering, dotted with the fallen and those barely standing.

A tense silence settled over the survivors.

Poseidon planted his trident and spat a wad of blood onto the floor. "If that was a warning, I hate the damn message."

Athena wiped her spear clean in short, savage motions. "It was not a warning. It was an attempt."

Hades knelt beside one fallen Black Star operative, his expression carefully schooled to ice. "Erasure teams don’t launch themselves. Someone with standing put boots on the ground."

Zeus forced the chaos down until it ceased its tremors in his hands. He took in the breach, then Tohu and Jehovah. "They came for me first. For the force. Not to claim it. To end it."

Tohu’s features were set in a grim line. "Which means at least one high-level interest has determined residual survival to be more undesirable than residual ownership."

Jehovah examined the failing edges of the claim sigils. "Black Star intensity at this level does not lend itself to scavenger instincts. This was authorized from a position high enough to accept the risk of striking a contested House-linked site."

Sera, blood drying at the corner of her mouth, allowed herself a wan, weary smile. "And now your precious temporary arrangement has been tested in the open. Well done. You are no longer debating possession. You are now defending a target."

Sun Wukong leaned on his staff and winced. "I preferred them when they only wanted to own us."

Loki studied the ruined termination seals. "Ownership can be bargained. Erasure is absolute."

Odin let his gaze linger on the broken sigils. "Then the board has changed, again. Claimants on one side. Killers on the other. And still an unstated hand behind the initial survival vector."

Zeus turned to his people, the survivors still bearing the wounds of the battle. The conditional assurance he had extorted from them earlier now seemed less a hindrance and more a help. They had come through not as cargo, but as a front.

"They failed," he said. "Next time they will come harder. So we don’t waste the next cycle waiting to be culled. We use whatever standing we have, and find out who wants us absent enough to bring Black Star to a sealed claim."

No argument was offered.

Outside the fractured hall, Continuum vectors had already been laid to carry word of the breach. Within, the nine stood amidst the ruins of the first effort to erase them from higher reality.

They were alive.

That, now, made them more dangerous and more desirable than ownership ever had.
