Chapter 406: After the Breach

They didn’t have time to get comfortable.

The instant the last erasure glyphs were scraped free of the shattered hall, the combat pressure was being replaced with something sharper-edged. Attendants blocked the most serious tears in the foundation. Medical law was practiced in rapid, precise passes. The dead were swept away without ceremony as the higher beings argued over the implications of what had just happened to the nine.

Malakhiel’s projection reappeared first, colder than it had been during the fight. "A Black Star team attacked a contested location attached to our bloodline and residual mass. That is no longer a matter of local custody concerns. This is exposure."

Tohu wiped at the blood on his lip, refusing to bow to Malakhiel’s tone. "Exposure caused by attempted erasure rather than training, perhaps? They came to remove the carrier, if you had locked him away in ignorance. They might have found an easier kill."

"They might have found less justification for keeping him," Malakhiel said. "The more apparent the residual mass, the more unavoidable these attacks become. Constrict movement, limit access, and place the carrier under direct House restriction before a second Black Star team finishes debating your family politics."

Sera let out a single amused sound from the far end of the hall, blood trickling down one side of her jaw despite the circumstances. "House restriction after an obvious breach will be seen as panic. Reposition them under mixed supervision while restoring my claim in part. I managed to keep them alive once. I can keep them less obtrusive than your family squabbles permit."

Jehovah stood amidst the broken claim and said nothing at first. He examined the damage as if considering his options.

Athena took advantage of that pause. "If the response to an assassination attempt is to increase containment, the people who sent the Black Star team have already received half the prize. They prompted you to reclassify us as a problem to be locked down."

Poseidon placed both hands on the trident and nodded. "We held the line inside this hall. That should be more valuable than reason to tighten your chains around the same wrists."

Hades’ gaze met Malakhiel’s projection. "Erasure teams were sent to remove us from existence. If your preferred outcome is confinement as erasure, state it clearly."

Malakhiel did not hesitate. "My preferred outcome is House stability."

"And ours is continuing to exist with standing," Zeus said. "We did not break apart under you, even when you tried to grind us down through controlled means. If containment only buys a smaller space and stronger seals, than cooperation has no value."

Tohu regarded him, and then Jehovah. "You’re correct about one thing. After a failed erasure attempt, treating them as inventory invites more teams to target the same location. Restricted movement with controlled containment is a better option if they come looking again."

Sera’s eyes gleamed with dangerous interest. "Watch what you’re implying, Tohu."

"I’m not suggesting a second erasure breach to dispose of them," Tohu said.

Jehovah turned away from the broken claim. "Malakhiel wants confiscation and discretion. Sera wants resupply and leverage. Tohu insists on continued residual operations. The nine demand standing. Black Star desires absence. You all should be able to see how any of these options might carry more cost than benefit."

Hermes exhaled slowly. "So choose the least costly path to the next erasure team."

Odin tapped Gungnir against the floorboards. "Fixed containment sites are now obvious targets. That should be considered more important than your pride."

Loki’s smile was absent of warmth. "And if you leave them exposed as contested possession, every faction that objects to residual life forms will already know where to send their next strike."

Malakhiel’s projection turned darker. "You’re using a House-attached breach as your opening offer."

Zeus nodded. "Because you proved your current possession policy is inadequate to preserve its center of interest. If we are to continue as contested property, adjust it to be operational. Limited movement, shared responsibility for residual control, and no further confiscation attempts or unauthorized transfer to Sera’s exclusive shelf. No sealed training facilities left behind to contain us for a new erasure team."

Athena added, "If Zeus uses this location for training, he reserves the right to practice escapes from the local kill zone. If we are to be contained as restricted operators, view us as a unit capable of relocation under specific authority rather than individuals on a broken floor."

Sera studied Zeus for a long moment. "And what do I have in return for not reopening seizure procedures at the first sign of instability?"

Jehovah answered for him. "Continued formal standing in the dispute. Not possession. Standing. If the unidentified extraction authority becomes known, all claimants are recalled to negotiation, including you."

It wasn’t enough, but it was more than she needed to refuse outright.

Malakhiel waited long enough for the hall to feel the weight of House condemnation before replying. "If they are to be operated on even under confinement, their failures will be heard."

"Their deaths in storage will also be loudly reported," Tohu said. "As will their finality."

Jehovah moved his gaze from the nine to the breach seals and back again. The imitation of the Father in this moment was uncomfortable in his bones, but the decision itself carried no hesitation.

"Temporary operational status with restricted limits," Jehovah declared. "The nine are to be regarded as restricted operators under contested supervision as a unit. Residual instruction continues with specific parameters rather than open access. Movement is only permitted under authorized relocation conditions. Unauthorized surge is cause for review. Private negotiations with external factions terminate this agreement. Malakhiel is given formal reports, and Sera has standing in the dispute but no seizure authority."

Malakhiel’s presence did not conceal his distaste. "You’re codifying the noise."

"I’m eliminating the possibility that erasure teams will find a single suitable hall to finish the job," Jehovah said. "The next failure is a risk to all of you."

Zeus held onto the decision rather than its victory. "Then add it to the record. Restricted operators, not cargo."

Jehovah gave a single approving nod. "Being entered."

Behind him, the broken claim continued to hum with the weight of rebuilding law and aftermath. The Black Star dead were gone, but the political impasses remained. And yet for the first time since the nine had been caught up in Continuum matters, their survival had bought a narrower prize than freedom and a broader one than storage.

Operational status.

Conditional. Watched. Fragile.

But real.

Poseidon released a slow breath through his teeth. "One assault to gain a better chain. What does the next one accomplish?"

Sun Wukong grinned without humor. "Hopefully the option to finish them first."

Zeus followed the line of the sealed breach and felt the residual force flex against his ribs in answer to distant eyes.

They had survived ownership disputes.

They had survived an erasure strike.

And now they had limited movement on a board where someone still wanted them dead.

That wasn’t safety.

It was the beginning of the next game.
