I Am Zeus

Chapter 404: No Longer Cargo

The records altered the temperatures of every argument that followed in turn.

The higher beings experimented briefly with returning to familiar forms before the crisis had settled. Malakhiel desired the problem minimized for House tranquility. Jehovah required ordered placement. Tohu needed assurance of residual regulation before the force reached additional teaching parameters. Sera wished to preserve her claim in light of the recent revelation regarding the depth of the extraction window. Ayin-Rash lingered sufficiently to acknowledge the record, then withdrew with the dispassionate satisfaction of one who had placed a truth on the table and had no obligation to smooth it for comfort.

The nine listened in the entirety.

Zeus then determined that the listening was complete.

They were once more presented into the main hall of audience in formal supervising language, as if another permutation of management would be chosen on their behalf. Malakhiel was included through projection, his dominion marks taut against the image. Jehovah and Tohu stood in flesh. Sera waited in an angle to observe each vulnerability. The residual force beneath Zeus’s skin pulsed fitfully, still sensitive in the wake of its surge and even more so now that it understood the possibility of a selective survival marking from an unguessed at hand.

Jehovah unfolded as expected. "In light of the instability of the residual force and the presence of an unidentified authorization in the extraction event, the carrier and attached survivors remain under restriction as options are considered: increased sealing, direct House confiscation, or continued supervised containment."

Athena did not wait to hear the remainder. "No."

Malakhiel’s projected gaze snapped toward her. "This is not a gathering of lower-origin opinion."

"It is a chamber concerning our existence," Athena replied. "If you desired our silence, you should have purged us with our world."

Poseidon came up beside her, trident planted. "We have been hunted, stored, conveyed, manipulated, and discussed as if we were residue with limbs. This ends here. If you require arguments concerning Zeus’s authority, you form them in our presence rather than in our absence after the convenient portions have been removed."

Sera curved her mouth. "Beware. That is the rhetoric which transforms temporary protection into temporary tolerance."

Hades regarded her first, then Jehovah and Tohu. "Should tolerance be contingent upon our continued existence as passive cargo, it was never protection. In light of the evidence presented by Ayin-Rash, it is evident that selection has occurred once before. You do not possess the privilege of pretending that you are the sole bearers of the right to repeat the process."

Tohu smoothed a hand over his jaw, eyes on Zeus. "The force is growing. Should this turn into a revolutionary address rather than a pragmatic statement, you will find yourself sealed by those who have lesser interest in your corpses than I do."

Zeus advanced into the center of the hall. The others did not fall back, did not place themselves behind him. That was equally important. He kept the chaos low, not masked but contained.

"I am not objecting to control arrangements," Zeus declared. "I am rejecting confiscation language. I am rejecting any discussion in which my people are divided between convenience and supplement while the force within me is treated as the sole legitimate subject. We are not cargo. We are not a House nuisance to be silenced. We are survivors of a world your bloodline abandoned, extracted through a passage none of you can claim, and remaining despite the odds."

Malakhiel’s tone remained even. "Standing together does not grant centrality."

"It grants intractability," Kratos noted from Zeus’s right. Final. Simple.

Jehovah observed the nine with the cold precision of his nature. "Should we grant you standing in residual matters, you become political entities on a board you do not yet comprehend."

Hermes lifted a shoulder in a loose shrug. "We comprehend sufficiently. Each faction in this chamber has designs on us. That grants us position, however distasteful it may be."

Loki smiled without warmth. "Distasteful position is preferable to polite patronage."

Odin let Gungnir rest lightly against the floor. "There is the third marking. If an unidentified authorization was responsible for our preservation, it is entirely possible that your tidy solutions are informed by insufficient authorization. Pretending that the nine are your sole concern is a kind of blindness."

For a heartbeat no higher being responded. The hall was filled with the weight of those who had always decided without consulting the masses, those who had always decided with the masses present and refusing to be silenced.

Sera broke the pause first, as she was inclined to do. "If they wish standing, offer it in restriction. Place responsibility on the carrier for stability. If Zeus surges again, the collection bears the cost. That holds them without implying that Malakhiel’s confiscation would be without consequence."

Malakhiel did not disguise his lack of approval, but he did not deny her either. "Shared responsibility is a kind of control."

"Indeed," Sera remarked. "One which may be accepted before the alternative."

Tohu fixed Zeus with a long look. "Should I continue instruction, it will be in the presence of all and with limiting parameters. Should the force exceed threshold, I will shut it down. Should you intend for this standing to be the mechanism by which you destroy the claim from within, you will find me ending the arrangement myself."

Zeus inclined his head. "Then state it in the record. We are restricted operators under contested supervision rather than inventory. Residual matters require our presence. No silent confiscation."

Jehovah’s jaw set. He turned to Malakhiel’s projection, then back to the nine. "Restricted operators under contested supervision. Temporary. Conditional. Subject to House review should instability persist." He paused. "And subject to immediate revision should the unidentified authorization present itself once more."

It was not freedom.

It was not a chain.

But it was a chain they had broken in the name of another.

Athena exhaled slowly. Poseidon did not smile, but something of the readiness to splinter the room was gone from his shoulders. Hades remained rigid, unrelenting, and present. The others held the line.

Zeus felt the weight of the decision settle.

Then the outer claim marks shrieked.

Not in entry. Not in argumentation. Violation.

Ayin-Rash’s previous warning rang in the worst possible manner as the sealed far side of the hall tore open under an impaling assault of erasure-bright combat markings. Black Star signatures bloomed through the opening, figures already engaged in assault rather than pursuit, already striking in the name of termination. The first wave struck the outer attendants and shredded two from coherent existence before the language of alarm could be fully formed.

Malakhiel’s projection snapped taut. "Erasure team."

Tohu was already stepping forward. Jehovah raised containment barriers of immaculate white. Sera disappeared from her angle and reappeared under better cover, efficient to the last.

Zeus turned toward the breach, the others locking in around him.

Their standing had just been revealed.

Now someone had come to remove the need for standing at all.
