I Am Zeus

Chapter 401: First Lesson, First Crack

  • Next Chapter

Conditional cooperation didn’t amount to much until someone decided to put it to actual work.

Tohu took the next cycle to secure a sealed practice room somewhere deeper within the holding claim and had Zeus brought there with the others in attendance. No ring, no examination language. Just floor reinforced in irregular markings along the walls and enough space for error. Jehovah looked down from the high side; Sera had not been invited but it would not take long for her to realize that.

Tohu rolled one shoulder and tapped the middle of the floor. "We begin with holding, not striking. Not shaping roads through law. Feel the force rise, keep it from climbing past your control, and put it back down without rewriting your surroundings."

Zeus stepped into the floor space, Athena took a station near the left wall. Poseidon, Hades, and the rest strung out near the door and far edges, close enough to stop an errant force but far enough that they would not be the first to hit.

Zeus breathed once and let the chaos rise.

It responded faster than he had in the lower world, heavier in the density of Continuum and more awake, and he kept the rise minuscule and forced it level against his ribs.

Tohu circled him. "Again. Higher. You’re treating it as a blade you can conceal in your palm. It is not a blade. It is weather in the blood, and if you only hide it it will learn to hide from you in turn."

Zeus lifted it higher. The air near his skin tensed tighter, a whisper of vibration ran through the floor markings.

"Hold," said Tohu.

He held. For a moment it seemed an easy task, then the force pushed back, not with the mindlessness of random violence but more like a test of the body that carried it. Zeus set his jaw and pushed it down, the tremor lessening.

Sun Wukong whistled from the side. "Look at that. Teaching without insults. Almost wholesome."

"Wait," said Loki. "Give it time."

Tohu ignored them both. "Again. This time when it rises, do not only hold it back. Run a circuit through your own frame and close it. No spill."

Zeus tried.

The chaos rose, he yanked it in and along arm and chest and spine trying to turn it into a loop that would stay within him, within his nature. The first two breaths of effort were easy. On the third the loop failed.

The surge broke out from him in a raw expanding pulse.

It was not an all at once detonation, but it was enough to crack the nearest containment markings and the floor itself in an expanding ring. Stone memory softened and then snapped backwards into broken ridges. Athena shouted his name, Poseidon threw up a wall of force on instinct and was sent back a step when the pulse hit it, Kratos placed himself in front of Hermes and took the edge of the blast on crossed chains, and Hades wrapped green black pressure around the far side of the room to keep the force from running out into the outer hall.

Zeus dropped to one knee, one hand on the floor the other pressed against his ribs as he forced it back down by pure will. For a brief second, within the surge, he felt . . .

Not Tohu.

Not Jehovah.

Not Sera.

A third attention, distant and precise, looking through the flare of the force like an afterimage of something already known. Then it was gone and too clean to linger.

"Cut it," said Jehovah from above, already moving.

Tohu had both hands out and the suppression lines shot down around Zeus until the final pocket of the surge folded in on itself and died. The room finished cracking, bits of stone drifting from the ceiling and filling the air. One entire section of reinforced wall had been rewritten into meaningless texture, like law that had forgotten its shape.

Zeus remained on one knee, breathing hard. "I had it."

"You had it until you didn’t," said Tohu, and for once there was no mockery in it only focus. "That is the lesson. Partial control is not control."

Athena was the first to him. "Can you stand?"

"Yes." He did, slower than he wished. The chaos under his skin was quiet but not ashamed and if anything it felt more like it was listening, the failed circuit having instructed it just as much as it had been instructed.

Jehovah scanned the damage with a cold eye. "This is precisely the risk. A supervised room is already strained. In open Continuum space that surge would have painted a beacon across half a district."

Poseidon wiped dust from his mouth. "Then perhaps the answer is better teaching and not more panic."

"The answer is limits," said Jehovah.

He did not have the chance to elaborate. The outer claim marking flared bright and an attendant appeared at the doorway with the look of someone bearing news that would not improve on the room’s current state.

"Sera has filed immediate addendum to her dispute," said the attendant. "She cites residual breach within temporary custody, structural damage under Tohu’s instruction, and argues the carrier is too unstable for current arrangement."

Loki chuckled under his breath. "She must have been waiting by the door for a noise."

Tohu’s face darkened. "She is using a training accident as seizure language."

"She is using proof," said Jehovah. "And the proof is on the floor."

Zeus looked at the twisted stone around his boots, then up at the higher beings, then his people. The conditional cooperation from the night before still held but the crack in their midst had already put pressure on it and if Sera pushed and Jehovah pulled and Tohu held then the nine would lose the narrow center they had fought to reach.

"I felt something else," said Zeus.

Athena turned. "During the surge?"

"Yes. Not one of them. Not recovery, not claim pressure. Something watched through the force for a moment then abandoned it." He looked at Tohu and Jehovah. "If Sera is right that the extraction window was not merely chance, then perhaps whatever opened that window still has an interest in what it let pass through."

The room went stiller.

Tohu and Jehovah exchanged a glance that needed no words. If a third attention could observe residual flare within a sealed claim then the board was already bigger than custody and dispute and family residue.

Sera’s addendum still hovered outside.

The room still cracked within.

And Zeus, still tasting the edge of the surge, knew that learning the force would not only make him safer.

It would make him visible to things that had been quiet until now.
