I Am Zeus

Chapter 400: Fracture in the Nine

  • Next Chapter

After Hades forced the dead to the open, the higher beings left them alone for a while.

Perhaps out of courtesy. Perhaps out of calculation. Either way, they were given a side chamber and enough silence for the argument lurking under their skin to finally surface. No Tohu. No Jehovah. No Sera. Only survivors of a destroyed world, still breathing under foreign terms, still carrying different answers to the same wound.

Poseidon began it, as patience had never really been one of his stronger suits.

"I am done pretending this is temporary shelter," he said, standing to one side of the far wall with the trident grounded by his side, sea-old anger clear in his face. "They admit neglect. They admit failure. Then they go back to managing Zeus like a live weapon and the rest of us like attached parts. If we stay cooperative, we become useful. If we become useful, they never let go." ℯℯ𝑙.

Athena answered without raising her voice. "If we stop cooperative behavior now, we return to contested traffic with worse attention than before. Sera already challenged custody. Scavengers already smelled the chase. Pride without a path is not strength. It is a quick way to get separated and taken."

Sun Wukong laughed once and dropped onto a low bench. "There it is. One side wants to bite the hand. One side wants to study the hand. Meanwhile the hand still owns the room."

Loki’s eyes moved from face to face, interested and cold. "There is a third option. We cooperate long enough to learn the board, then take whatever leverage the learning gives us. Tohu wants residual control. Jehovah wants containment. Sera wants claim. That is three hungers. Hungry beings make mistakes."

Hades remained near the wall, arms folded, green light dull under his skin. He had said what he needed to say in the hall and still looked no lighter for it. "You all talk like the next move is only strategy. Part of me wants one of them broken for what their abandonment made possible. Part of me knows killing a maker will not open a road back to the dead. I am not interested in becoming their soldier while they sort old guilt into useful policy."

Hermes paced once, then stopped. "From a practical view, Athena is right about the danger of bolting blind. From a survival view, Poseidon is right that usefulness becomes a chain. From a personal view, Hades is right that none of this pays the dead back. So we are stuck choosing which kind of loss we can live with."

Odin had been silent until then, one eye half-lidded as if listening past the chamber. "The Continuum does not reward pure refusal. It also does not protect pure obedience. If we remain only reactive, every higher being with a claim will keep writing our future for us."

Kratos finally spoke, flat and final. "I will not be stored. I will not be sold. If training gives Zeus control over the thing they all want, then training has value. If cooperation becomes kneeling, I am done."

All of them, in different ways, looked to Zeus.

He had expected that. He had not welcomed it. Since the escape, through the fog, the traps, the custody terms, and the ugly truths about abandoned work, they had still followed the center he held. That center was fracturing under more than enemy pressure now. It was fracturing under grief, rage, caution, and the simple fact that survival had begun to mean different things to each of them.

Zeus rested his hands on the edge of the central table and let the chaos under his skin stay low. "I hear all of it. Poseidon is right that cooperation can become ownership. Athena is right that refusing everything throws us back into open hunting. Hades is right that the dead are not paid by our usefulness. Loki is right that their hungers can be used. Kratos is right that there is a line under which survival stops being survival."

Poseidon’s eyes narrowed. "That is a list, not a decision."

"Then here is the decision," Zeus said. "We do not bolt blind. We do not become quiet property. We stay under the terms long enough to take what we need from them: control over what I carry, knowledge of the extraction window Sera will not fully explain, and a clearer map of who else has a hand in our survival. But we stay as a group with conditions of our own. No separation. No sealed decisions about my power. No using us against each other."

Athena nodded once, slow. "Controlled cooperation."

Poseidon shook his head. "Controlled cooperation is still cooperation. You are asking me to trust process after process already ate our world."

"I am asking you to stay alive long enough to make a better choice than dying angry in a hall we do not own," Zeus said.

Hades pushed off the wall. "And when Tohu’s instruction begins in earnest? When he starts shaping the force in you to his satisfaction? Do we watch that happen and call it leverage?"

Zeus met his brother’s eyes. "We watch it happen with all of us present. If the teaching turns into claiming, we stop it. If I start becoming only what they need, you pull me back. That is not a soft request. That is the condition for me continuing this path."

Sun Wukong tipped his head. "And if half of us decide later that the path is wrong?"

"Then we argue again before anyone breaks the line alone," Zeus said. "A split in secret gets people taken. If this group fractures, it does it in the open where the rest can still answer."

Loki smiled without softness. "Practical. A little noble. Possibly doomed. I can work with it for now."

Hermes rubbed a hand over his face. "For now may be the only honest timeframe any of us have."

Odin thumped the butt of Gungnir lightly against the floor. "Then the vote is not pure unity. It is a hard majority around temporary direction."

Poseidon stared at Zeus for a long moment, then at Hades, then at the sealed door beyond which Continuum powers continued to decide how much the nine mattered. "I do not like it."I know," Zeus said.

"I will not like it tomorrow either."

"I know that too."

Poseidon’s grip eased on the trident by a fraction. "But I will not be the first to split the line. If we do this, we do it as one ugly body of stubborn fools."

Hades closed his eyes once, then opened them. "I will stay for now. Not for Tohu. Not for Jehovah. For the chance that the next truth we force into the open costs them more than it costs us."

Athena looked around the chamber. "Then we hold. Conditional cooperation. Group conditions. No silent desertion."

One by one, through words or plain acceptance, the others settled around that center. Not peace. Not agreement clean enough to trust forever. Only a direction strong enough to keep them from tearing apart in the first room that gave them enough safety to finally turn on each other.

Zeus felt the decision settle over the nine like a temporary cloak.

Outside the chamber, Sera’s dispute remained active. Tohu still wanted residual control. Jehovah still wanted the problem contained. Somewhere beyond all of them, the unnamed window that had helped pull survivors from a dying world remained unexplained.

Inside the chamber, the nine had chosen not to break.

Not forever.

Just long enough to face the next hand on the board together.
