I Am Zeus

Chapter 397: The Shape of What Remains

  • Next Chapter

Zeus found Tohu alone in the side corridor before any of the higher beings could formalize matters otherwise.

He had waited until Jehovah left with the attendants and the others were all distracted with wounds and silence and the sealed hall felt less like a stage. Tohu was studying a wall mark as if it mattered more than the people he had helped create and abandon and maybe it did to him.

"You do not get to walk past this," Zeus told him.

Tohu did not turn right away. "Past what?"

"Our world. Your residue. The fact that something in me is still moving with your fingerprints on it." Zeus stopped a few paces away. "You and Jehovah left a living universe on the shelf and called it finished work. One your copy finished the killing for. And now you want custody and process and I want answers that do not sound like inventory language."

Tohu faced him fully this time and in the cleaner light he looked less like a hunter and more like a craftsman forced to inspect damage he had expected never to see again. "You think we sat in a room and chose neglect for pleasure?"

"I think you forgot you." Zeus said. "And forgetting was enough to end everything we were."

Athena’s voice came before her from the archway behind them. "He is not wrong." She walked in with Poseidon and Hades at his back with the other nine in a loose, hard line. None of them seemed interested in waiting out in the hall while the makers of their dead world sorted categories. "If this residual force is part of why Zeus was hunted, then it is part of why we are all standing here under foreign terms. Talk in front of us."

Tohu glanced over the group then towards the far sealed door where Jehovah had gone. "Jehovah will not like an unstructured conversation."

"Jehovah looks like the face that erased our sky." Poseidon said. "His comfort is not high on my list."

There was a thin silence that followed that. Even Tohu did not bother to defend the resemblance.

Hades spoke next and the green under his skin made the words feel heavier. "My wife died in the ending your abandonment made room for. If something of your old work survived inside Zeus then I want to know whether we are living in the aftershock of a mistake or the opening of another one."

Tohu leaned back against the wall and let out a slow breath. "Fine. No ring. No formal pass. You want it plain."

He pointed at Zeus, not as accusation but as identification. "When we built that design Jehovah handled structure and I handled the parts that needed to be free to move. Some of that variable force was never intended to be a fixture inside a closed lower reality. Most of it faded when the assignment was left running without us. Most. Not all."

Zeus felt the chaos under his skin answer the words no matter how much he wanted it to not. "And the part that remained found me."

"It rooted in you." Tohu said. "Through battle and rule and the end and extraction. It should have died when your universe died. It adapted instead. That is why Sera could smell value on you. That is why I was able to find you in open traffic. That is why Jehovah is unsettled. Active creative residue is not supposed to survive full judgment inside a lower-origin body."

Sun Wukong rested his staff against one shoulder. "Is it killing him?"

"Not yet." Tohu said. "It is growing with Continuum exposure. If he keeps using it blind it will eventually use him back. If we seal it wrong we may rip both apart. If we do nothing then every serious power who cares will come for the carrier."

Loki laughed once under his breath. "So the options are possession, mutilation or becoming bait."

"Those are the ugly options." Tohu said. "There may be others if he learns the force rather than only surviving it."

Jehovah’s voice came from the far end of the corridor, cold and exact. "And there is the danger. Teaching him may complete the very binding we should be cutting."

He had returned sooner than expected. The nine turned as one. The resemblance to the Father still scraped nerves raw but Zeus did not step back from it.

"You left the design," Zeus said to both of them. "A copy wearing your structure judged us to death. Your residue is alive in me. If you wanted clean closure that chance died with our world. What remains is consequence."

Jehovah stopped a few paces from Tohu. "Consequence does not grant you authority here."

"No," Athena said. "But it grants us standing. You are not discussing a free-floating weapon. You are discussing one of us."

Poseidon tapped the butt of his trident once against the floor. "And we are done being the last people informed about our own lives."

Tohu looked at Jehovah and something old and irritated passed between them, the familiarity of beings who had shared work and blamed the leftovers for it. "He is not stable enough for neglect. You saw that as clearly as I did. Limited instruction under watch is safer than waiting for the next to happen in a crowded hall."

Jehovah’s jaw tightened. "Safer for whom?"

"For every fool in range when it breaks." Tohu said.

Zeus closed his hand until the chaos stopped crawling. "Then the next step is not another sealed examination. You teach me enough to keep it from rewriting the ground under my feet. In return we stay under the terms and do not make this hall our second escape attempt. But no decision about sealing, removal or ownership is made without us present."

Hades’s eyes stayed on Jehovah. "And one more condition. Stop pretending our dead were acceptable losses in a forgotten project. They were not variables. They were people."

Jehovah was silent for a long moment. When he finally answered the words were still hard but they were not empty. "Noted."

It was not apology. It was not enough. It was, at least, not denial.

Tohu pushed off the wall. "Then we start with control. Not combat. If he cannot hold a surge in a closed room he dies in an open one."

Wukong snorted. "There it is. Mentorship by threat."

"Welcome to the Continuum," Tohu replied.

Later when the higher beings had withdrawn to set methods and limits the nine remained in the corridor with the weight of what had been said. No one celebrated and no one pretended the terms had become freedom.

Zeus stood with his people and felt the unfinished power move under his ribs like a second pulse.

Their world had been abandoned.

Its ending had been decided by a copy.

And the live remainder of that mistake was now awake enough to demand a future.
