I Am Zeus

Chapter 398: Sera Comes Back

The argument in the corridor had settled into an uneasy stillness by the time the first messenger arrived.

Zeus and the others had not gone far. There was nowhere much to go. The sealed hall and its side passages still held them under Tohu’s temporary claim and Jehovah’s watch, and after the confrontation over residual force and abandonment, no one was in the mood for feigned rest. Poseidon sat against the wall with his trident across his knees. Athena remained standing. Hades had gone silent again. The rest kept close enough that any change in the air would reach all of them at once.

The change came in the form of a formal pressure at the outer mark of the holding claim.

Tohu felt it before the messenger spoke. "She did not waste time."

Jehovah’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Sera."

The messenger was one of the hall attendants, pale with the effort of carrying a challenge he knew could turn ugly. "Sera of the private claim requests entry under dispute right. She brings no recovery line. She brings formal challenge to current custody."

Sun Wukong snorted. "No recovery line. How polite."

"Let her in," Jehovah said. "If she is coming as politics instead of net, better to hear it in the open."

Sera entered like someone had already spent her anger and refined the remainder into purpose. She was not armored for lane war. She did not need to be. Her presence alone tightened the hall. Behind her came only two attendants, enough to witness, not enough to stage a seizure by force.

Her gaze moved over the nine first, then over Tohu, then over Jehovah.

"You settled terms over my claim while my line was still in range," she said. "That was bold."

Tohu did not bother with welcome. "Your claim lost continuous possession. Temporary custody went to the one who secured the group before the lane became a corpse pile. You know how this works."

"I know how you want it to work," Sera replied. "I extracted them. I covered them. I spent authority keeping scavengers off them before any of you remembered that old assignment existed. Then they ran, and instead of supporting recovery, you converted the mess into personal custody."

Athena stepped forward before Zeus could. "If this is going to become another argument in which we are discussed like stolen tools, say so now. We are in the room."

Sera looked at her, then at Zeus. "You are in the room because you are valuable and dangerous. That is not the same as being equal to the powers deciding your status."

Poseidon rose from the wall. "Say that closer."

Zeus lifted a hand slightly, enough to stop him without looking away from Sera. "Why are you here? If you cannot seize us, what do you want from this challenge?"

Sera’s answer came clean. "I want the custody arrangement recognized as contested, not settled. I want formal review of extraction rights, residual authority, and which of you two abandoned creators thinks he can inherit my work because blood or old design marks got involved. And I want it on record that if Zeus’s force is as active as you now claim, leaving it under Tohu’s training hand is not neutral."

Jehovah’s voice was calm and cold. "You are asking for process."I am demanding it," Sera said. "Because if process fails, every private operator in range will conclude that extraction claims can be overwritten whenever a higher bloodline gets interested. That is bigger than your group."

Hades laughed once, low and joyless. "There it is. Not us. Precedent."

"Both," Sera said. "You are the present problem. Precedent is the future one."

Tohu folded his arms. "You held them as leverage against me and anyone else who might pay attention. Do not dress that up as guardianship."

"I held them because they survived what should have left nothing to hold," Sera said. "And because the one carrying active residue would have been stripped to pieces in open traffic without a screen. You only decided to care once the residue became undeniable."

The hit landed, and Tohu did not bother denying it.

Zeus watched the three of them and felt the same old bitterness rise, different now only because he understood more of the shape of it. Sera wanted claim. Tohu wanted residual control. Jehovah wanted containment. All of them could talk for days and still leave the nine standing in the same sealed hall with no road home.

"You said something else," Zeus said to Sera. "In the way you talk about extraction. You speak like the pull out of our dying world was harder than a private operator should have managed alone."

Sera held his gaze for a moment. For the first time since entering, she looked less like a claimant and more like someone choosing how much truth was useful.

"I did not pull nine coherent survivors out of full external judgment by sheer stubbornness," she said. "There was a window. There was a route. There was enough disruption in the ending for a precise extraction to succeed. I used it. I am not required to hand you the entire map of how simply because you are now inconveniently awake."

Jehovah turned fully toward her. "If there was a window, someone made it."

Sera’s smile was thin. "And that is the part you should all be far more worried about than whether temporary custody sits with Tohu for another span of days."

The hall grew quieter.

Athena’s eyes sharpened. "You are saying the extraction was assisted."

"I am saying pure chance is a story for children," Sera replied. "Your world was under sentence. Complete erasure should have left me nothing to retrieve. Instead I got nine intact survivors and one of them carrying live residue. That is not luck. That is condition."

Loki’s voice came soft from the side. "And you rode the condition without asking who opened the road."

"I ride conditions," Sera said. "That is the work. You can hate it and still benefit from still being alive."

Tohu’s attention had changed. Less irritation, more focus. "If a third hand shaped the extraction window, then this was never only your claim or my residue problem."

"Now you are catching up," Sera said.

Jehovah looked from Sera to Zeus, then to the sealed outer marks of the hall. "Formal dispute is noted. Temporary custody remains in place while review opens. No seizure. No unilateral training beyond agreed limits. And Sera will provide a full account of the extraction conditions."

Sera’s eyes flashed. "Will I?"If you want your challenge taken seriously," Jehovah said, "yes."

For a moment it seemed she might refuse on principle. Then she glanced once more at the nine, at Zeus in particular, and nodded the smallest fraction. "Then prepare your review. But do not pretend this ends with old assignment guilt and family residue. Something helped them live. Something with enough reach to interfere at the edge of judgment. If you keep staring only at each other, that something will get farther ahead of you than it already is."

She left with her witnesses, the dispute planted and growing.

After the pressure of her presence faded, Poseidon rubbed a hand over his face. "I am starting to miss when our problems were only gods and monsters."

Wukong leaned on his staff. "Speak for yourself. I am still trying to decide which of these people I hate most efficiently."

Zeus stared at the doors Sera had used and felt the chaos under his skin move, slow and attentive. Custody. Residue. Abandoned work. And now a window in the ending of their world that none of the obvious powers fully owned.

They had stopped running.

The board, however, had only grown wider.
