Chapter 396: First Reading

They pulled them from the hall before they had adjusted to the idea of staying there,

a narrower chamber lay beyond the sealed inner doors, designated for examination rather than repose and the upper walls bore the marks, the measurements, the notations of containment. Tohu was first, then Jehovah, and then two silent attendants who took up positions by the single remaining exit and said nothing at all. The nine were permitted entrance together, precisely as the terms stated, but it made Zeus uncomfortable nonetheless the instant the doorway was sealed behind them.

Tohu indicated the ring at the center of the floor. ’Stand there. Do not try to resist the first pass. If you fight the reading as if it is pure reflex, everyone ends more uncomfortable than they were.’

Zeus stepped forward, into the ring. Athena started to follow, stopped abruptly at the threshold. Poseidon hovered within reach, an intervention if the process became anything like an attack. Hades waited against the wall with his unblinking green eyes. The other five formed a rough half-circle, ragged, expressionless, the implication, apparently, that their presence might hold the higher powers to account.

Jehovah assumed the place across from Tohu. ’Controlled contact only. If the residue rises, you cut it.’

’I know how to deal with my own work,’ Tohu replied.

Zeus almost laughed, at the words and the implication behind them. ’Your own work is inside my ribs. Pardon me if that is not a condition I find particularly agreeable.’

Tohu fixed him with a steady gaze. ’Then watch that it does not wake. This is what you demanded to see’

The first pass struck beneath his sternum, not a blade against his throat, not a rope tightening across his ribs but something more like focus, denser law than he had been familiar with in all the lower world, applied with an intrusive insistence

The chaos within him that he had sealed and unsealed and tempered over years of wars now stirred, impatient, responsive. Zeux took a bracing breath, let the reading settle into his bones instead of bristle at it.

Athena’s voice came from the periphery, taut with disapproval. ’Zeus?’

’I am still here,’ he forced through his teeth. ’Watch them closely.’

Tohu’s expression altered, first irritation, then distaste, then something that approximated genuine astonishment.. ’It is not a scar. It is active’

Jehovah frowned. ’Elaborate upon the term active.’

’Living creative residue,’ Tohu said. ’Not an imprint, not a borrowed blessing. A working portion of the variable layer in the old assignment adapted within him rather than decaying with the design.’ The word hung an instant too long in the air between them. ’It appears to be growing’

Poseidon inhaled sharply between his teeth. ’Say that in plain language.’

’I think,’ Tohu said, without taking his gaze from Zeus’s face, ’that a proportion of what I invested in your particular universe failed to die when your universe was supposed to collapse. It found a home inside him. This is why both Sera and I could sense him, even through the noise, and why scavengers began altering their orientation. Residual force of that type does not behave well when its supporting matrix ceases to function.’

Jehovah crossed closer to the ring, made a far neater, more structural pass himself; something inside Zeus responded in a manner not entirely unlike tracing lines of ancient architecture onto his internal nature, and Jehovah withdrew just fractionally sooner than Tohu would have.

’There is more,’ he said. ’The residue should have collapsed along with the judgment. It didn’t. Furthermore, it should not still display such ready response to Continuum density within a lower origin carrier. Something about this preserves cohesion where cancellation should have completed the action’

Hades muttered something from the periphery that had little to do with sound, less still with words. ’So we are not only looking at a residual carrier but an abandoned machinery.’

’Simplifying,’ Tohu said, ’it is correct.’

For a long moment Sun Wukong rested his elbows on his staff, the sharp light in his dark eyes unreadable. ’Can it be extracted?’

Again, Tohu and Jehovah exchanged a look that was far too long for either of them to have done so unless the consideration involved a matter of real and pressing concern.

’It depends on how deep its roots have extended,’ Jehovah said at last. ’If removal is viable, that is to say if it is merely embedded rather than modified tissue, if the process itself has already rewritten host matter for the purpose of its continuation.. removal may not only prove fatal to the carrier but break the force into something... less desirable than the original condition.

Zeus pressed his fingers hard against his palms until the sensation of pain grounded him. ’Speak plainly. You are both circling the question. Say the element in doubt. Say it is not stable’

Tohu shook his head. ’No, not stable. It is still expanding, albeit slowly. Its exposure toContinuum density is feeding the process. Every engagement, every forced adaption, your repeated extraction and suppression of the force itself all contributed, all taught it your parameters. That is the reason the reading is clearer than it would ever have been in your ancient skies’

Athena stiffened, her expression tightening into something considerably colder than disapproval. ’So your failure was not only to destroy our world. It created a living process inside one of us and you abandoned us to it anyway.’

Jehovah did not flinch from her eyes. ’Your analysis is correct. A completed review process does not equal sufficient closure. We allowed the assignment to become an unfinished task and left active mechanisms in place as contingency. One of those oversights produced the faulty copy which rendered judgment on your world, and the other now stands in this ring with us.’

Loki exhaled a single dry laugh. ’How lovely. Your little disaster breeds twice.’

Zeus could feel the reaction to the gathered attention already in his muscles, the flare at the ring marks, the distorting forcefield at his feet which sent the stone of the surrounding floor rippling outward for an instant before Tohu snapped a suppressing line around the surge and stilled it once more.

That was what unstable looked like, he informed his shaking limbs. That is what contained doesn’t mean safe

Kratos took a pacing step close to the ring. ’End the reading if it is going to unravel him.’

’It isn’t tearing him apart,’ Tohu said evenly. ’It’s showing us that containment by ignorance is a procedure already complete. He can sustain it for a time and not safely believe that it is any kind of concealed weapon he can draw on his wrath’

Zeus forced himself to stop trembling, then raised his chin. ’In that case, teach me what it is before it does decide itself upon me.’

Jehovah held his gaze, unblinking as ever, with that same particular measure of detachment and deliberation. ’Training promotes dependency upon the force it seeks to restrain. Especially when that force is likely to remain in use.’

’It leaves me half-blind and creates a catastrophe in movement,’ Zeus told him, ’you both have already created one of those’

There was a pause within the chamber; the attendants did not move, nor did the other five who stood watching the higher powers with the kind of patience exhaustion fosters in those who have lost the ability to become angry

Tohu finally inclined his head, once only, the equivalent perhaps of a single short nod. ’Restricted instruction. Supervised acquisition. No open combat application until he can maintain restraint against a continued surge.’

Jehovah did not accept that decision but only looked away from the ring, expression grim. ’Supervision only. Removal will be revisited immediately if the residue exceeds appropriate growth limits regardless of personal objection in the matter.’

Zeus stepped out of the ring as the examination ended. He was damp with sweat that had gone cold against his spin, and Athena was already at his side as if she thought he might fall before she could take hold of him. Poseidon looked ready for an enemy to present himself and receive a demonstration of unpleasantness accordingly and Hades had turned his gaze sideways as if he could not quite bear the notion of growth in what amounted to something nearly a ruin.

’It is starting to sound a lot like having an active weapon in one of your pets,’ Wukong announced after a moment too long

’It is the inheritance rather than the termination of it,’ said Odin

Zeus looked down at his hands, empty of all but his pulse. The chaos had gone quieter in him, not vanished, and never would, no matter what the next choices he would be required to make.

’That works both ways,’ he said at last. ’And neither of you have that future without consideration’

Tohu’s expression altered again, once more that careful weighing of interest perhaps or simply calculation and he inclined his head very slightly. ’For now that is the agreement’

Beyond the doorway of that chamber the life of the Continuum continued on more dense law and older names but within the seals it had just left, one condition was irrevocably altered.

What Zeus carried inside him was no mere trace scar upon a dead universe.

It had not yet finished growing.
