I Am Zeus

Chapter 384: Broken Claim

  • Next Chapter

Sera felt the seam give from three layers away.

Coverage wasn’t a wall you watched with your eyes. It was a projection of decision, an extension, and when nine residual signatures forced themselves through a defect she’d already flagged as ugly, the break was an insult against her very being. One moment her claim over the extracted cluster was continuous and the next it was open air and vanishing trails.

She was already moving before the secondary reports were formed.

The control spine of the working region blinked under her presence as she entered it and the local operators fell silent mid-sentence. Screens of the residual law surrounded the forced seam, replaying the passage in compressed sequence: disguised approach, hard contact, bodies tearing through conflicting laws, the outer feed accepting them one after another. She watched the last signature clear the cut and felt something cold and sharp settle under her ribs.

Not shock. ℴ

Fury.

"Seal the defect," she said. "Then burn the soft spine behind it. I want every ignored maintenance cut in this node listed and closed before the next interval."

The senior attendant bowed too quickly. "At once. Do you want pursuit lines opened along the older branch-"

"I want names." Sera’s voice did not rise. It thinned. "Who walked the spine without my mark. Who thickened traffic at the junction. Who thought a hairline disagreement in my screen was an invitation."

No one answered. The records were already clear enough. The nine had not been stolen from inside. They had walked out themselves using a weakness her own people had left half-dead and unwatched.

She dismissed the attendants with a glance and stood alone before the residual image of the escape.

For a long span she did not move.

When she finally spoke, it was to the empty air of the control spine, as if the Continuum itself were required to hear the correction.

"I did not pull you out of a concluded design for charity."

The words settled soft and absolute.

"I did not spend extraction authority, coverage, and political heat so nine lower-origin remnants could rediscover pride and call it freedom. You were not rescued. You were retained. There is a difference, and you have just made me articulate it."

She turned from the display and paced the length of the spine. Every step pushed denser authority into the local law until the walls themselves seemed to listen.

"Yahweh abandons his assignments and calls it growth. Tohu scatters residual marks like a child leaving tools in the rain. External judges erase designs and move on. I do not move on. I collect what survives the mistakes of greater names, and I turn survival into position." Her mouth curved without warmth. "You were proof that lower-origin stock could endure full judgment and remain coherent. You were leverage against Tohu’s old authority. You were a future argument against Yahweh’s bloodline when that argument became useful. You were mine."

The residual replay showed Zeus forcing the seam last of all, chaos-mark flaring against her coverage.

Sera’s eyes narrowed.

"Especially you," she said.

She stopped before the largest screen and pulled up the wider map of her territory’s outer approaches. Pursuit lines were already being requested by subordinates who wanted permission to look decisive. She denied half of them with a gesture and refined the rest into something narrower, meaner, less theatrical.

"I kept you polite because polite inventory does not panic the board," she said quietly, still speaking as if the escaped nine could hear her across the broken radius. "I moved you into active space so that other Houses would see a claim instead of a vault. I answered Tohu’s channel so that he would negotiate with me instead of simply taking. Every restraint was strategy, and you answered strategy with a maintenance cut and a stolen lane."

Her hand closed. The residual image of the seam crumpled and went dark.

"So the restraint ends."

She opened a deeper channel, one that did not go to local operators. Orders flowed outward in clean, hard packets: reclassify the nine as absconded assets under active recovery; authorize density matches at the edge of her wider influence; post residual-signature bounties through intermediaries that would not carry her banner but would still feed her the returns. Not a public declaration of war, but something more practical. A net.

Veyth arrived at a fast walk, his armour script still adjusting to the elevated alert. He stopped at a respectful distance and waited until her attention had shifted.

"The outer branch has gone quiet," he reported. "They took the older feed. Pursuit has contact with residual disturbance but not with bodies. Also-" He hesitated by a fraction. "Secondary interests have already noticed the break. Compact traffic has changed direction. At least one neutral relay is selling the fact of your lost claim before we can price it ourselves."

Sera’s expression did not change. "Of course they are. Nothing draws scavengers faster than a broken shelf."

"There is more." Veyth’s voice tightened. "A formal approach has been logged at the far edge of our outer markers. Not a probe. A direct line. The signature is Tohu’s."

That did land.

Sera turned fully toward him.

"He is coming himself?"

"Or close enough that the difference will not matter when he arrives," Veyth said. "The channel request does not ask permission to speak. It announces transit. He is answering your open contest by walking into range."

For a moment the control spine was silent except for the low grind of systems re-configuring around a claim that no longer held its objects.

Sera’s fury did not vanish. It refined.

"He waits until my inventory runs, then arrives to inspect the damage," she said. "How like him."

She looked once more toward the dark direction of the older feed, where nine escaped remnants still burned the first stretch of a freedom they did not yet understand the cost of.

"Let him come," she said at last. "If Tohu wants to stand in my territory while my claim is broken, he can do it in person. And if the nine think distance has made them anything other than contested pieces, they will learn otherwise when the net closes from more than one side."

Veyth bowed. "And recovery priority?"

"Zeus first," Sera said. "The rest are valuable. He is the point."

Outside the spine, wider Continuum traffic continued to adjust around the sudden smell of lost ownership and advancing interest. Inside it, Sera stood under the cold light of her own systems and began preparing to receive a creator of abandoned worlds while simultaneously hunting the remnants that had dared to leave her mark.

The claim had been broken.

The response would not be polite.

And Tohu was on his way.
