I Am Zeus

Chapter 383: One Attempt

Zeus drew the order in the dust once, and wiped it away with his boot.

"Wukong first. He has already survived the cut. Loki second to read the far side. Athena third. Hermes keeps the spine from looking empty behind us. Poseidon and Kratos hold the middle weight. Odin next. Hades after him. I come last. If the seam starts closing, the rear does not argue. The rear pushes."

Nobody asked for a better plan. There wasn’t one. Sun Wukong rocked his shoulders, and the courier disguise settled over him again-thinner this time, built for motion rather than long deception. Loki’s clerk shape followed after with less regard for elegance. The remainder used their layering, the mute, the borrowed rhythm, the discipline of not looking like a formation of powers on the run. It wouldn’t fool Sera if she was watching the exact point. It only had to fool the space between here and the seam.

They left through the service cut in staggered pairs with a meld of night-shift runners and low freight. The soft spine took them one after another into its worn dark. Old stone. Old law. The place still felt empty, but more dangerously so. Someone had been walking these routs with more care after the previous test. Footing was fresher into the dust. A watch charm hung spent and dark at one junction, recently used.

Wukong raised a hand. They slowed.

Hermes’s private thread rubbed against the line. "Upper lanes are heavier. Two operators parked near the old flutter point. Not on the spine not yet. If we stay clean, we reach the seam before they decide on being thorough."Then we stay clean," Zeus returned.

They moved.

The spine narrowed, climbed, and delivered them into the defect in one long note of controlled breath. The seam looked precisely unchanged-a vertical disagreement in the air, ugly, thin, and bleeding cold from a lane that didn’t belong to Sera’s continuous mark. Standing near it still made the teeth ache.

Wukong didn’t stop to hear speeches. He struck the cut hard.

The logics in conflict seized him at once, grinding presentation and true form in the same motion. He tore through with a soundless snarl, shoulder first, and hit the far lane on his feet. Blood from his nose painted the dull cloak and faded into the disguise. He turned, braced, and pried the seam wider with both hands for the next body.

Loki came through rougher, the clerk shape shredding halfway across. He landed in a crouch, already scanning the thin outer feed-sparse traffic, older architecture, no immediate wall of pursuers.

"Far side holds," he rasped. "Move."

Athena followed, spear turned close to her body to give the seam less edge to catch. Poseidon and Kratos pressed the middle as the living weight, the trident and chains scorching sparks from the defect as its coverage logics tried and failed to determine them. Odin crossed the cut with his jaw set, Gungnir’s head hooded. Hades went through in a rush of thinned green light, the passage coaxing a raw sound from him that might have been a curse. Hermes slid the cut like a man walking between arguments, then spun to keep the near side from closing too soon.

Zeus came last.

The seam hated him most. Residual chaos and old sky made the defect grip harder, as if the screen itself wanted to hold that particular signature. For a breath he was caught between systems, not claimed nor released. Then Kratos’s hand locked around his forearm from the far side and wrenched him through.

The seam snapped closed behind them with a pressure clap that rode the outer screen in a hard, bright wave.

Silence remained for less than a heartbeat.

Sera’s coverage answered.

It didn’t need her physical presence to register a continuous mark forced. Alarms were wrong word. The Continuum equivalent was denser, a directed compression, a sudden multiplication of attention, pathways flickering in sequence as local operators received hard instructions and external screens began to reconfigure. The thin outer feed, which a moment before had simply felt uncared for, now felt like a road that had only just remembered it was being watched.

"Go," Zeus said.

They ran.

Not blind. Wukong and Loki had mapped this first stretch. The lane curved through undermaintained arches and past a dead junction where older House marks still clung like stains. Hermes continued to throw small false motions into side cuts, anything to make pursuit hesitate or break. Athena counted intervals under her breath. Poseidon’s sea-power wanted to rise and answer the pressure, and he kept it leashed so they wouldn’t paint the air with signature. Hades moved like a man carrying a wound he refused to look at. Kratos set the pace like a blade being driven forward with nothing but choice.

Behind them the forced seam screamed in system terms. Sera’s local net closed over the working region they had left. Farther out, wider screens began to shift. The break was no longer a private defect. It was an event.

A pursuit line cut into their feed from a higher parallel-not on them not yet, but close enough that the density changed. Wukong snarled, spun a clone into a side mouth for distraction, and killed the copy before it could be captured whole. Loki dropped a fragment of false trail that smelled of their group and sent it down a useless spur.

"Next mark is a split," Loki said tightly. "Left goes denser. Right goes older and emptier."

"Right," Zeus ordered.

They took the older branch hard. The architecture worsened. Light thinned. For the first time since extraction, the air around them did not hold Sera’s continuous claim. Her wider attention could still reach, but her permanent coverage could not. That difference settled in the body like a shift of gravity.

Athena felt it and didn’t smile. "We are outside her radius."

"We are outside one cage," Hades said. "The rest of the Continuum is not freedom."

He was right. Even as they put distance on the broken seam, other pressures leaned in from far lanes-curious, opportunistic, the faint returning attention of powers that had been watching the dispute. Tohu’s interest was still somewhere in that dark. The Compact’s greed had not died with one crushed probe. And Sera herself would not stay behind her screens once she was finished counting who was missing.

They reached a low overlook where the older lane spread into a ragged platform above a deeper, poorly lit gulf of transit fog. Wukong planted his staff and breathed like a man who had been holding the same breath since the cut. Loki shed the last scraps of his clerk shape without ceremony. The others did the same, true forms settling back into place under a sky that wasn’t a sky, only Continuum depth.

Zeus glanced back once toward the direction of Sera’s territory. The screen wave of the break was still visible as a long bruise of disturbed law.

"We keep moving," he said. "Find ground we can hold long enough to choose the next direction. No stopping until the immediate pursuit thins."

Kratos grunted agreement. Poseidon wiped blood from a split lip. Athena was already charting the fog below for routes. Sun Wukong laughed once, short and wild, the sound of a man who had stolen something valuable from a powerful hand and knew the chase would be worth it.

Loki’s eyes gleamed. "One attempt. We took it."

In the working region they had fled, Sera’s coverage finished its first complete accounting and turned outward with clean, cold intent.

Before them, the Outer Continuum opened into lanes they did not own, names they did not know, and powers that had been waiting for contested pieces to fall free of their shelf.

They were no longer inventory under a single claim.

They were loose.

And loose things in the Continuum didn’t stay unclaimed, for long.
