I Am Zeus
Chapter 382: The Seam
They did not argue long
The map Wukong had scratched into the dust remained between them, smudged already by boot heels and spear butts. Two outer feeds. One soft spine. One defect where coverage logics failed to agree. Otherwise watched ground.
Zeus pressed his knuckles to the floor beside the lines. "We test the seam. Not a break. A touch. We learn how loud it is, how fast her screen answers, and if a body can pass without being peeled open. If the reaction is too thick, we walk away and look for something uglier."
Athena’s jaw set, but she nodded. "Three go. No more. If the density spikes, you drop contact and return through the spine. No heroics."
"I will take point," said Wukong.
"I will take the second set of eyes," said Loki,
Hermes looked up the floor. "I can keep the return lane timed. If you need the spine to clear for thirty breaths, I can make the local flow busy enough to conceal a withdrawal."
That was settled.
Hades watched them prepare without offer to join. Poseidon looked ready to object and remained silent. Kratos only checked the weight of his chains. "If the screen locks behind them, we break it from this side."
Zeus met his eyes. "Only if they are dying. Not before."
They left in the same narrow service cut as before, timing their exit to a passing knot of supply runners. Wukong and Loki wore disguise again-dull courier and weary clerk-while Hermes moved ahead the width of a breath, already working small delays and bottlenecks into the nearest lanes so that ordinary traffic would gather up behind and mask a retreat, should one be necessary.
The soft spine welcomed them with the same stale air as before. Old construction. Less polished law. The kind of thing higher beings passed through without thought until something took up residence.
Wukong kept his clones collapsed this time. One false body near the seam would be enough to draw the eyes of all. Loki walked without flourish, slate under his arm, until even Athena would have needed a second glance to unmake his illusion of everyman. The seam hovered where the spine arched upward toward the outer screen.
It did not resemble a door. More a flaw-a vertical hairline of pressure where two coverage systems met and refused to name the same thing. Standing near it made the teeth ache. The air wavered between thin and stifling without pattern.
"Poor thing," said Wukong. "Ugly."
"Poor thing," said Loki. "Ugly things open."
Hermes’ voice slid in on a narrow private thread. ’You have a clean window on the return spine. Forty breaths. After that the lane normalizes and any fast movement will show."
Wukong took the first step.
He did not drive his whole body into the flaw. Only a hand, then the edge of his shoulder, to let the clashing logics scrape along the disguise. For a moment nothing happened save the pain. The seam devoured presentation, density, the simple idea of single form in one place. His courier shape threatened to unravel into what lay beneath.
He held.
The seam widened by the width of a finger.
Cold from outside Sera’s continuous mark bled through-not the freedom of the Continuum, only another possession of air. Wukong glimpsed a darker stretch of undermaintained lane beyond, sparsely traveled, a thing of necessity rather than want.
He withdrew.
The seam snapped inward with a soundless hitch. The reaction did not remain at the edge. Pressure bled outward along the outer screen in a shallow wave, as if touched, and somewhere above their heads a watch pattern altered.
Loki’s head turned sharply. "She will not have felt us yet. Her local operators might."
A pair of armored figures altered course on a parallel upper lane-not running, only adjusting, their attention sliding toward the section of screen that had fluttered. Routine curiosity. The dangerous kind.
Hermes’ thread tensed. "Window is still open. If you stay, it closes on you."
Wukong wiped blood from his nose with the back of a wrist and grinned without joy. "One more touch. We need to know if a full body can clear it."
"Do it fast," said Loki.
This time Wukong drove in harder. Disguise frayed at once. The seam rejected coherence. It tried to carve him into one coverage logic or the other and failed, rasping at his skin and spirit alike. For three breaths he was neither in nor out, merely caught between systems. Then his leading shoulder punched through into the darker lane beyond and the remainder of him followed with the sensation of being skinned by law.
He stood on the other side for a single stolen moment-truly outside air, thinner, less possessed-and forced himself back before the seam could complete its decision on his value as an intruder.
He struck the spine floor on one knee.
The outer screen shuddered. The shallow watchwave became a distinct pulse. One of the armored figures broke from its lane and began a swift descent toward their section.
"Out," said Loki.
They ran the spine in a low controlled burst, no flashy business, no waste of energy. Hermes thickened the traffic behind them at the last useful junction, forcing the descending operator to run through a sudden knot of freight traffic. By the time the armored figure reached the seam section, the three of them were already weaving back into the ordinary flow near the designated structure, disguises still in place by habit and necessity.
They did not remove their borrowed faces until they were within walls again.
Wukong spat pink into the dust and rotated his shoulder with a grimace. The seam had left a sensitive ribbon of pain where it had tried to rewrite him. Loki’s clerk face peeled back, showing thin tension around the eyes. Hermes came last, breathing more heavily than he liked to pretend.
Zeus took one look at them and knew the test had come to a head.
"Talk."
Wukong redraw the map with the butt of his staff, harder this time. "The seam opens under force. A body can pass. It is not a quiet thing to do. Touch it once and the screen flutters. Touch it hard and local watchers move. A full group going through will not look like weather. It will look like a break."
Loki’s voice was flat. "We get one real attempt. Maybe less. After that she will seal the defect or sit a permanent eye on it. Soft spine still helps us approach. The outer feed beyond the seam is thinly traveled. If we clear the cut cleanly, we have a short run before denser traffic and foreign marks become the next problem."
Athena took the report without flinching. "Then the next move is the move. No second test."
Poseidon’s knuckles whitened on the trident. "And if the screen locks mid-passage?"
"Then some of us make the other side and some of us do not," said Hades. There was no drama in it. Only the addition of bad options.
Kratos looked from the map to Zeus. "When?"
Zeus stared at the hairline mark that represented the seam. In his mind he could already imagine how Sera’s attention would turn the moment the screen truly screamed. He thought of Tohu’s interest, of the Compact’s grasping hands, of the long line of things that would be happy to collect whatever fragments remained after the nine scattered under pursuit.
He thought also of remaining useful property until someone higher finished the debate over their possession.
" Soon ,"
he said. "We set the order, the timing, and the cover. When we go, we go once.
Outside, the transit node continued its unremarkable business under Sera’s mark. The seam, far along the soft spine, had already begun to settle back into its ugly unsteady stillness.
It would not remain unnoticed forever.
Neither would they.
