I Am Zeus
Chapter 381: Soft Routes
Night in the working region did not fall so much as thin.
The transit node moved on its own denser laws, lanes of muted gold and grey flowing past each other like long patient arcs. From the low structure Sera had assigned their use the nine could observe its flow without becoming part to it.
That was useful. That was not sufficient.
Sun Wukong crouched on the narrow inner ledge of an upper arch and rolled one of his shoulders until the joint loosened.
"I need closer eyes," he said, voice rough with the weight of the air. "Traffic patterns from here are guesses. Guesses get people erased."
Loki, already braced against the opposite pillar with his arms folded, gave a single inclined nod. "Agreed. If we wait for perfect information to walk into our hands we will die of old age under someone else’s mark. We go look."
Zeus stood below them in the common room, listening. Athena was not impressed.
"Sera’s coverage is not blind," she said. "If either of you trip a recognition line this whole decision ends in a cage with less polite walls."
Wukong smiled without humor. "Then we do not trip one."
He flipped two hairs loose from his head, rolled them between his fingers, and exhaled. The air thickened for a second. Two copies of him solidified on the ledge--same face, same staff, same restless pose--then faded themselves down into the nondescript outer layer runners, dull-cloaked and unremarkable. The real Wukong’s outline went loose, color leaching away into the same forgettable register until he was indistinguishable from any minor courier passing between nodes.
Loki’s approach was subtler. He turned his face away, and the details of him slipped. Height, tone, the particular tightness of him, all smoothed down into the shape of a thin logistics clerk, tired eyes and a slate under one arm.
"If she sees us directly the disguise means nothing," Loki said, voice low. "Her attention cuts presentation. So we do not let her see us. Shadows, side lanes, maintenance cuts. We stay where a higher being has no reason to look."
Zeus considered them both for a long moment, then gave a single approving nod. "You get a narrow window. You map exits, soft corridors, and anything that moves without her personal mark. You do not engage. You do not test a boundary by force. If the air changes, you break contact and return."
"And if we find a clean route?" Wukong asked.
"Then we have a beginning," Zeus said.
They left through a low service cut at the rear of the structure, timing their exit to coincide with a passing cluster of local operators to mask their exit. Almost immediately the density of the node pressed heavier against their altered forms. Even muted, both could feel the difference between observing the Continuum and walking within it.
Wukong sent the first clone swinging wide along a parallel lane while keeping the second close as a relay. The true body stayed in the lee of a slow freight current where the light was dirty and the attention of passing beings stayed fixed on their own burdens. Loki fanned the other way, slate held like a man on errand, measured steps to the local rhythm so nothing of him asked to be noticed.
They worked in fragments.
A side corridor that looked open from a distance narrowed to a checkpoint stamped with Sera’s residual authority. Wukong’s clone marked it out and dissolved before the stamp could fully taste it. Another lane had unmarked transit--possible, but the flow fed into a denser junction guarded by two armored figures whose posture said habit and boredom, not urgency. Bored watchers still reported. Loki filed the junction and moved on.
Time became distance and distance became a list of refusals.
They found a maintenance spine running beneath the main node, half-swallowed by older construction. The air here was stale and less carefully ordered. Wukong felt his shoulders drop a fraction as the pressure eased. Loki arrived from the opposite cut a few moments later, still wearing the clerk’s face.
"This is softer," Wukong muttered.
"Soft is not free," Loki reminded him. "Something built this spine for a reason. If Sera’s people stopped using it, that reason may be worse than her mark."
They followed it anyway, careful not to rush. It opened in places to narrow views of lower traffic, then closed again into blind stone. In one such break Wukong glimpsed a far platform where a group of Sera’s operators stood in conversation with a being whose presence weighed heavier than the locals. He pulled the clone back at once and forced his own body deeper into cover until the stronger attention passed elsewhere.
"She can feel presentation if she looks," he said under his breath. "I am not giving her a reason to look."
Loki’s eyes, still the wrong color for his true face, tracked the same platform. "Then we stay where looking would be a waste of her time."
They mapped what the spine allowed. Two possible exits fed into outer lanes that did not immediately carry Sera’s continuous mark. One of those turned toward a darker inter-territory stretch where traffic thinned and the architecture looked older, less maintained, less loved. The other curled back toward denser control and was discarded.
A third option presented itself almost by accident--a hairline seam in the node’s outer screen where two different coverage logics met and failed to seal perfectly. Not a door. A defect. Wukong’s last remaining clone brushed it and almost came apart under the conflicting pressure. He dismissed the copy before it could scream his position and crouched with his teeth locked until the reaction passed.
Loki watched him, offering no help. "That one will kill the first fool who treats it like a gate."
"But it is a weakness," Wukong said.
"Yes. And weaknesses are where plans begin."
They did not push farther. The window Zeus had given them was already stretching. Both had felt the distant shift in the local density more than once--not aimed, not yet, but searching in slow sweeps that made the disguises feel thinner than cloth. Every time they went to ground, became still, and let the sweep pass over places they were no longer standing.
On the return path Wukong’s last usable clone picked up a piece of operator talk near a supply cut--movement orders, an external interest pressing the wider boundary again, someone grumbling that the nine assets had been relocated into active space and made everyone’s watch rotation harder. Useful. Not enough.
They re-entered the assigned structure through the same service cut they had used to leave, shedding disguise only when the outer lanes were behind and the immediate walls belonged to their own quiet. Wukong rolled his neck with a grimace. Loki’s true face settled back into place like a blade returning to its sheath.
Zeus, Athena, and the others were waiting.
"Report," Zeus said.
Wukong scratched a rough map into the dust of the floor with the butt of his staff. "Main lanes are watched. Soft spine underneath runs farther than it should. Two outer feeds. One useful. One is a trap shaped like an exit. And a seam in the screen where coverage logics do not agree. Nasty. Possible."
Loki added the details without embellishment. "Sera’s people are already complaining about the attention we draw. External pressure has not dropped. If we move, we move through the spine toward the thin outer feed, and we treat the seam as a last option rather than a first one."
Athena studied the lines in the dust. "She will notice a real break. The only question is how much lead we can buy before she does."
"Then we buy what we can," Zeus said.
Hades stood apart from the circle, eyes on the incomplete map. "And after the first corridor? We still need somewhere that is not another owner’s mouth."
They did not have that answer yet.
Outside, the transit node moved on its own denser laws. Somewhere past her screens, other interests still watched the dispute. Inside the low structure, nine survivors of a dead universe now had more than just anger and theory.
They had the beginning of a route.
It was narrow. It was ugly. It was not free.
But it was theirs to test.
