I Am Zeus

Chapter 380: Enough

The working region was worse than the holding court, not because it was cruel, but because it was honest. The density pressed heavier on the skin, the pathways marked with Sera’s authority in clear, continuous lines. Local operators moved past with brief, measuring glances, those who had been told the nine here were sanctioned assets and should not be interfered with. No chains. No cells. Just a cage with better lighting and more traffic.

They were given a low structure of dark stone and muted gold as temporary quarters near the edge of an active transit node. From the open archways they could see Continuum traffic moving in the middle distance-con signings of power, armored relays, distant figures traveling under House colors none of them recognized. It should have felt like an upgrade from sealed containment and instead it felt as if they had been put on a shelf for buyers to get an improved look.

Sun Wukong lasted less than a day before the words came out.

He stood in the center of the common room with his staff planted against the floor and looked on the others as if daring them to tell him he was wrong.

"I am done being walked from one marked radius to another like a borrowed weapon," he said. "First storage. Now deployment. Next she will point us at a problem and call it opportunity. I did not survive the end of a world to be inventory with a nicer label."

Loki, seated sideways on a low bench with one leg hooked over the other, gave a thin smile of agreement.

"For once the monkey and I are aligned. We are being kept because we are useful and contested. That is not protection. That is delayed sale. I would rather steal myself back than wait to see which higher being makes the better offer for my continued breathing."

Kratos did not raise his voice. He never had to.

"They move us when it suits them. They trade words over us when it suits them. I will not stand quietly while old powers argue over ownership of my life. If there is a way out of her coverage, we take it."

The room went still.

Athena was the first to respond, measured and hard. "If we break coverage without a real path, we do not become free. We become unclaimed in a layer that has already started smelling blood. The Compact will not offer terms. Neither will half the scavenger interests watching this dispute."

Poseidon’s grip flexed on his trident. "She also has a point. Leaving a cage into open water only matters if you can swim farther than what is hunting you."

Hades leaned against the far wall, green light low under his skin. "Escape to where? We do not know the routes. We do not know the Houses. We do not know what waits beyond her screens except denser powers and older claims. Running blind is not defiance. It is suicide with extra steps."

Sun Wukong laughed once, sharp and humorless. "Then we stop being blind. We learn the gaps. We watch the traffic. We find a corridor that is not hers and we take it. Anything is better than waiting to be assigned."

Loki tipped his head toward Zeus. "You have been very quiet, Sky Father. Do we remain polite property, or do we admit this arrangement is only a slower chain?"

All of them looked at him.

Zeus had been listening without interrupting, arms folded, eyes on the floor as if the stone itself might offer a better option than the ones in front of him. When he finally lifted his head, the decision was already settled in his face.

"We escape."

Athena’s eyes narrowed. "Zeus-"

"I am not interested in dying for pride," he cut in. "I am also not interested in becoming the most useful object in Sera’s collection while Tohu and half the Continuum revise their maps around us. She pulled us out of a concluded design and called it discretion. Then she stored us. Then she moved us into active use so other powers would see her claim more clearly. That is not alliance. That is management."

He looked at each of them in turn.

’Athena is right that running blind will get us erased. Hades is right that we do not yet know the board. But Kratos, Loki, and Wukong are also right. If we accept her terms without building an exit, we teach every higher being watching that we can be held indefinitely as long as the cage is polite. I will not accept that.’

Poseidon exhaled through his teeth. "So what changes?"

"We stop only adapting," Zeus said. "We start studying routes, schedules, coverage seams, and anything that moves through this node without her direct mark. We do not break outward tomorrow like fools. We prepare. When we move, we move with enough knowledge to disappear farther than the first pursuit can casually follow."

Sun Wukong’s grin returned, thinner and harder than usual. "Finally."

Loki’s eyes half-lidded in satisfaction. "A delayed theft is still a theft. Acceptable."

Kratos nodded once. That was all.

Athena was silent for a longer span. Then she said, "If we do this, we do it properly. No half-formed rebellion. No emotional exits. We map everything that can be mapped from inside her claim. We identify at least one viable corridor and one fallback. And when we leave, we leave together. Broken numbers will get hunted down in pieces."

"Agreed," Zeus said.

Hades pushed off the wall. The bitterness in his expression had not lessened, but it had focused. "If there is a path that leads somewhere other than another owner’s shelf, I will take it. I have lost enough to other beings’ decisions."

Hermes rubbed a hand over his face. "I can watch traffic patterns better than most of you. Give me time near the outer lanes and I will start sorting what belongs to her from what only passes through."

Odin’s voice was quiet. "And when she notices the change in our attention?"

"She will notice," Zeus said. "We do not give her a clean excuse before we are ready. We remain useful enough not to trigger punishment. We remain quiet enough not to look like an open revolt. And underneath that, we build the way out."

Outside their quarters, Continuum traffic continued to move through the node under Sera’s distant authority. Probes and rival interests still pressed at the wider boundary of her territory. Tohu’s claim still hung unresolved in the political air. None of that had changed.

What had changed was the nine.

They were no longer only surviving under foreign coverage, waiting to see which greater power settled the argument over their existence. They had chosen a direction of their own.

Escape.

Not immediately. Not blindly. But deliberately.

Zeus stood near the archway and watched the distant lanes of moving light and denser bodies, already beginning the work of separating what belonged to Sera from what could be used against her claim.

Behind him, the others settled into the same quiet shift.

The cage was still a cage.

But now they were counting the bars.
