I Am Zeus
Chapter 379: Rising Price
Word spread faster than formal channels.
The open exchange between Sera and Tohu had not been announced, but it had not gone unnoticed, either. In the Outer Continuum, when two of their standing ceased to use intermediaries and spoke their own names over residual authority, the surrounding layers noted the shift in pressure. The intermediaries logged the change. The minor Houses adjusted their attention maps. And at least one opportunistic interest decided that contested inventory was only contested until someone faster put their hand on it.
That interest came from the Grey Veil Compact – a loose, acquisitive coalition which specialized in claiming unattended anomalies before stronger powers had resolved their arguments. They did not care for Tohu’s old assignment, not for Sera’s pride. They cared that nine coherent survivors of a concluded lower design sat under disputed coverage while their two primary claimants measured each other.
A Compact probe, thicker and greedier than the earlier minor tests, slid towards the outer screen of Sera’s territory and pressed hard enough to leave a mark.
Inside the holding court the difference was immediate.
Zeus felt the new contact as a blunt, grasping pressure rather than the cleaner recognition that had come with Tohu’s agent. Athena’s head snapped towards the boundary. Poseidon lifted his trident a fraction. Even Hades looked up, green light tightening under his skin.
"That is not him," Athena said.
"No," Zeus agreed. "That one wants ownership, not confirmation."
Before the probe could deepen, Sera’s coverage slammed down with a violence she had not used on Tohu’s messenger. The Compact contact was crushed, peeled back, and thrown outward hard enough to make the ambient density outside her boundary ripple. The message was not subtle. The next hand that reached would lose fingers.
The probe withdrew in parts.
Silence only lasted a breath.
Sera entered the holding court before the residual pressure had fully settled. Her expression was colder than the last time they had seen her.
"The price of your continued existence just went up," she said. "Tohu’s interest made you visible. Visibility has invited scavengers. The Grey Veil Compact just tested my screen. They will not be the last."
Poseidon’s mouth curled. "So your private inventory is becoming public argument."
"Yes." Sera did not waste soft language on it. "And public argument attracts more claimants than I intend to entertain. Holding you here in static containment is no longer efficient. It makes this territory look like a vault waiting to be cracked."
Sun Wukong leaned on his staff. "If you say we are being moved somewhere safer, I may laugh."
"You are being moved somewhere more useful," Sera said. "Useful things are harder to snatch without consequence. Stored things are not."
That landed differently across the group.
Hades’s eyes narrowed. "You are putting us on the board."
"I am putting you under active deployment inside my coverage," Sera corrected. "There is a difference. You will remain under my authority. You will not be offered to Tohu. You will not be left sitting in a court while every opportunistic Compact and secondary House decides to measure my screens for weakness. You will work."
Zeus stepped forward half a pace. "Work towards what?"
Sera studied him for a moment. "Toward making your presence cost more to take than it costs me to keep. Tohu wants the residual mark. The Compact wants anything unattended. Others will invent reasons soon enough. I need you visible as my assets rather than my prisoners. That means orientation, controlled exposure, and tasks that bind your survival to my interests in a way third parties cannot easily ignore."
Athena’s voice stayed level. "And if we refuse?"
"Then I withdraw coverage and let the next claimant to reach you decide your disposition," Sera said. "You have seen enough of the lower tiers to know how that ends."
No one answered that.
Loki exhaled a soft, humorless sound. "From storage to leverage. Progress, of a sort."
Kratos spoke without ceremony. "Where?"
"A working region on the edge of my controlled territory," Sera said. "Not a front line. Not a vault. A place where my people already operate and where your presence can be recorded as sanctioned. You will adapt faster under real Continuum density than under sealed holding. You will also stop looking like objects waiting on a shelf."
Odin’s single eye remained thoughtful. "Tohu will read the movement as escalation."
"Tohu already chose escalation when he opened a direct channel," Sera replied. "I am answering the board as it exists, not as it was three days ago."
She turned slightly, and a new pathway unsealed along the far side of the court – darker than the administrative corridors they had walked before, edged with her personal mark rather than neutral process script. The pressure coming off it was heavier, more honest, less filtered.
"Collect yourselves," she said. "When you step through, you leave passive containment behind. From this point forward, every power that looks at you will see my claim first. Whether that protects you or paints a clearer target on your backs depends on how quickly you stop thinking like survivors of a dead lower design and start thinking like beings who intend to remain expensive."
Zeus looked across the nine.
The same understanding moved through all of them in different shapes. Remaining still had become its own form of vulnerability. Sera was not offering freedom. She was offering a harder position on a wider board. The alternative was being pulled apart by whoever reached them next.
He nodded once.
"We move."
The others fell in without open argument. Even Hades. Even Sun Wukong. Even Loki, whose thin smile suggested he already found the new arrangement more interesting than the cage.
Sera did not wait for speeches. She turned and led them towards the pathway.
Behind them, the holding court remained intact, but its purpose was already finished. Outside her territory, the Compact’s failed probe was still sending secondary ripples through acquisitive channels. Further out, Tohu’s attention remained fixed on the residual mark he had confirmed. And beyond both of them, other interests had begun to revise their maps around a newly contested point.
The nine survivors crossed the threshold under Sera’s mark.
Passive storage was over.
The board had started charging rent.
