I Am Zeus
Chapter 378: Open Channel
Tohu did not summon another thin agent. He stood alone in a chamber of dark glass and moving stormlight, the confirmation from Sael still fresh in his mind, and opened a formal channel himself. No relay theater. No polite intermediary to delay the request. The request carried his mark cleanly enough to strike the outer screen of Sera’s territory with the weight of decided distance-wasting.
Sera accepted it after a pause long enough to signify that acceptance was still hers to make.
Their images resolved to face each other across the link -- not full, but close enough that expression and pressure carried. Tohu looked as he always did when business turned serious: loose posture, sharp eyes, the residual amusement of one who’d decided the other was going to be inconvenient.
Sera looked calm. Always looked calm when she was already three moves ahead of the conversation.
"You touched my boundary,"," she said.
"You sent me a message about leftover work carrying my authority," Tohu replied. "I confirmed it. Now we can stop pretending this is still a matter for probes and formal notes."
"You confirmed it from outside my coverage. That does not give you claim."
"It gives me interest." Tohu’s head tilted slightly. "One of those nine is still marked with early creative residue from a design I helped shape. You are holding that mark under private coverage and using it as inventory. I am not asking for a tour, Sera. I am telling you that residual authority does not become yours just because you reached it first."
Sera’s eyes did not harden. They thinned. "The design was concluded. The assignment was abandoned. Any residual signature that survived external judgment did so inside my extraction window and under my protection. Possession is not a theory in the Outer Continuum. It is a fact of density and reach. At present, both favor me."
"For the moment."
"For the moment is where most authority lives."
They regarded each other in silence across the channel, far below Tohu’s position, storm fronts continuing to move through their valley. Inside Sera’s territory the holding screens remained steady, but the ambient pressure had already begun to change.
In the holding court the nine felt it as a slow increase in weight.
Zeus stood near the center of the usable space and let the shift move through him. It was not an attack. It was attention -- two different higher pressures leaning toward the same point from opposite directions. The chaos under his skin answered one of them with a faint, unwilling recognition.
Athena looked up from the boundary line she had been mapping. "The coverage is being tested from the outside and tightened from the inside at the same time."
Poseidon grunted. "They are negotiating."
"They are contesting," Hades said. His voice was low. "We are the object."
Sun Wukong rested his staff against one shoulder and watched the air as if it might show the argument if he stared hard enough. "I preferred it when the giant hands were trying to end the world. At least then everyone was honest about the violence."
Kratos remained silent near the edge. Loki’s expression had gone interested and cold. Hermes paced once and stopped. Odin listened with his eye half-closed, tracking the shape of forces he could not yet name.
Zeus did not tell them to stay calm. Calm was irrelevant. What mattered was not giving either side an excuse to accelerate.
On the open channel Tohu exhaled through his nose.
"You want them for leverage," he said. "Do not insult both of us by dressing it up as rescue or scholarship. You saw an irregularity that survived a full judgment, and you saw my mark on one of them, and you decided that combination was worth keeping. I understand the logic. I am now part of the logic."
Sera’s reply came measured. "And what do you want, Tohu? Sentiment for a childhood assignment? You left that design behind ages ago. Yahweh structured it. You disordered it enough to make it interesting, and then both of you moved on. Why claim the residue now?"
"Because it is still mine to claim or refuse. Not yours to quietly absorb. If I decide the mark is worthless, that is my refusal. If I decide it has value, that is my value. What I will not do is let you hold it while you wait to see which of my enemies offers you more for access."
"You assume I need buyers."
"I assume you never hold an advantage without eventually spending it."
The channel carried the silence that followed. Neither of them looked away.
Sera spoke first. "I will not transfer the nine to you on the strength of a residual signature and an old assignment record. They remain under my coverage. They remain in my territory. If you want a formal discussion of disposition, you may request one under proper terms. You may not continue testing my boundary and calling it confirmation."
Tohu’s mouth curved, not quite into a smile. "Proper terms. From you."
"Yes."
"Then here are mine." He lifted one hand and ticked the points off without heat. "I want direct access to the marked one. I want an unfiltered reading of the residual authority. I want a clear statement of what you intend to use them for before any third House smells the irregularity and decides to make this a wider problem. In exchange, I will not escalate beyond this channel yet, and I will not invite Yahweh’s side into the conversation out of spite."
Sera’s eyes flashed once at the last clause. "You would not invite Yahweh’s side. You hate sharing credit and blame equally."
"True," Tohu said. "But I will still use the threat if you force me to be boring."
The pressure around the channel increased by a fraction as both of them allowed a little more of their real density to show. Not enough to break anything. Enough to remind the other that this was not a conversation between functionaries.
In the holding court the air grew heavier again.
Athena’s voice was quiet. "One of them is pushing."
Zeus felt the chaos-mark in his nature tighten in answer to the distant recognition. He forced it still. "They can push as hard as they like. We do not move until someone with a name and a face demands it in front of us."
Hades gave a short, humorless breath. "You still think this will stay polite."
"No," Zeus said. "I think the moment it stops being polite, we need to know exactly which direction the first real blow is coming from."
On the channel Sera finally said, "I will consider limited access under my supervision. I will not grant you private control. And if you bring Yahweh’s bloodline into this, I will treat that as an attack on my claim and answer it as such."
Tohu shrugged one shoulder. "Then we have the shape of a disagreement. You keep them. I refuse to accept that as permanent. We both watch the boundary. The next move will cost more than a probe."
"Agreed."
There was no handshake. No formal closing protocol. The channel simply ended when both of them withdrew their attention from it at nearly the same moment.
In the storm-lit chamber, Tohu stood alone again and looked out over the moving weather.
"Stubborn," he muttered. Then, quieter, "Fine."
Inside her own territory, Sera closed the last residual thread of the connection and turned her attention back toward the holding court. The nine were still there, still contained, still useful. But the quiet advantage of sole possession was gone.
Tohu knew.
He had claimed interest.
And in the Outer Continuum, once a being of his standing claimed interest, the matter could no longer be stored indefinitely on a side platform.
The contest was open.
