I Am Zeus

Chapter 377: First Pull

Tohu gave the order without raising his voice.

"Take a thin agent. No banner, no formal challenge; brush the outer edge of Sera’s coverage, confirm the residual mark, and tell me which of the nine is carrying it clearest. If her people push, leave; I am not paying for a fight I have not chosen yet."

The being who received the order was a slender, grey-edged operative called Sael. He knew when a task was about information and when it was about pride, having worked the spaces between Houses for long enough. This was information. He bowed once and went.

Raleth watched him go then glanced to Tohu. "You could still ignore the whole thing."

"I could," Tohu said. "Then Sera keeps a live fragment of my early work under her hand and I learn of it from someone less polite later. No. Better a controlled touch now than a surprised later."

He turned back to the storm valley as if the matter was already half-finished.

Sael crossed the intermediate routes with the efficiency of one who preferred not to be remembered. When he reached the outer screen of Sera’s territory, he did not try to break it. He simply pressed against it with a narrow probe of attention, precise and careful, searching for the signature the message had claimed.

Inside the holding court, the change came like a change in weather.

Zeus first raised his head. The pressure was different from the earlier minor probes - cleaner, more focused, threaded with a sort of force that brushed against the sealed places in his own nature. Chaos under his skin stirred, once, unbidden.

Athena’s eyes narrowed. "New contact. Not House-standard."

Poseidon swore under his breath. Hades turned fully towards the boundary for the first time in days, green light sharpening. The others, too, felt it, in their own way but the reaction landed hardest on Zeus, in whose nature something of the probe had been recognised, and had been mutual.

Sael found the mark.

Degraded by time and low-reality translation, but real - an early creative authority, chaos-patterned and consistent with Tohu’s old work. It was clearest in the one at the very heart of the group, the one whose residual nature still held the memory of unbound force.

Sael held the reading long enough to be sure.

That was longer than Sera allowed, however, her response coming as a hard, localised compression of coverage, snapping down on the point of the probe with enough density that it made the air outside her boundary seem suddenly narrow. Sael withdrew the probe immediately, but not before a clean, cold voice reached him across the contact.

"You are outside your permission."

Sera stood at the edge of her own screen, but not fully beyond it, dark eyes fixed on the place where the agent’s attention had pressed. She did not raise a weapon. She did not need to. The coverage around her territory had tightened another degree, enough to make any further casual brushing expensive. Sael kept a respectful, empty posture. "Inquiry only. Residual claim confirmation."

"Then you have confirmed it," Sera said. "Carry that answer back. The next touch will not be received as inquiry."

Sael did not argue. He had what he had come for. He retraced his steps along the same thin route he had used to arrive, leaving the boundary undisturbed behind him.

Inside the court, the pressure dropped just as swiftly as it had risen.

Sun Wukong rolled one shoulder. "That one felt personal."

"It was," Zeus said. His voice was somewhat quieter than usual. The chaos under his skin had settled down, but the fact of the recognition lingered. "Whoever sent it was looking for a specific mark. It found mine."

Hades studied Zeus for a long moment. "Tohu."

"Most likely."

Athena already looked towards the sealed passage that led deeper into Sera’s territory. "She will not like that he touched her coverage, even lightly."

Indeed she did not.

Sera entered the holding court a short time later, with no great ceremony. The air came in with her, sharper than usual.

"You felt the contact," she said. It was not a question.

Zeus nodded once. "It was looking for residual authority. It found it."

"It found you." Sera’s gaze swept across the nine of them, then returned to Zeus. "Tohu sent a deniable probe. He has confirmation now, which means the quiet period is over. Your value has increased, as well as the number of beings who will eventually decide they have an opinion about your disposition."

Poseidon’s grip tightened over his trident. "And your coverage?"

"Still holds," Sera said. "For now. But understand the change. Before this, you were an irregularity under private control. Now you are an irregularity that has been touched by one of the original makers of your lost design." Her gaze darkened. "That draws eyes. Some of those eyes will not ask permission before they look more closely."

Loki’s smile was thin. "So we have been promoted from inventory to contested inventory. Delightful."

Kratos spoke without looking at her. "What do you intend to do?"

"I intend to make Tohu answer me properly instead of sending thin agents to paw at my boundary," Sera said. "And I intend to keep the rest of you from becoming so public that a larger House decides this matter should be taken out of both our hands."

She paused, then added. "You will remain inside the radius. No answering residual pull if you feel anything again. If Tohu wants a closer conversation, he can have it with me."

Zeus met her eyes. "And if he decides he wants the mark back more than he wants your courtesy?"

Sera’s expression did not change. "Then we discover whether his interest is stronger than my claim."

She left them with that.

The nine stood in the muted light of the holding court while the outer Continuum made discreet adjustments to the new fact. A probe had touched them. A residual signature had been confirmed. Somewhere beyond Sera’s coverage, Tohu now had the one piece of information he had lacked - the mark was real, and he knew which of the nine were carrying it. ℴℴ𝘮

The board had moved.

This time, it had moved towards them.
