I Am Zeus

Chapter 385: Two Hunters

Zeus kept them moving.

The older lane was narrow, uneven, and poorly lit. The remnants of collapsed Houses clung to the walls. Traffic remained sparse throughout. The advantages were all but canceled by the disadvantage of distance.

Wukong went first with his staff half-drawn. Loki kept watch on the cutting. Athena marked the junctions silently. Poseidon limped once, forcing the damage back. Hades said nothing. Kratos matched Zeus step for step. Hermes maintained a watch on their trail. Odin heard the Continuum, and it waited to speak.

Sera’s continuous mark had been lost. It was a fact proven by the throbbing in Zeus’ shoulders where the discordant law had scraped away at him. The others bore similar damage, though in various places. It was not discussed.

Hermes raised a hand.

"Change in pursuit."

Zeus halted. The group halted with him.

"How close?"

"Not on us yet. Wide search pattern. Residual tracking. She is not guessing. She is hunting."

Athena cleaned her spearhead of dust. "Bounties?"

"Likely. Intermediaries. Deniable recovery lines. She will not come herself until she has to."

Poseidon spat on the floor. "Good. Let her send tools first."

Hades chose that moment to speak. "Tools still kill."

They chose the next turn more sharply. It led downward into a gulf of fog where older transit ways crossed without designation. Visibility became limited. Density varied with each wave.

Wukong sent a single clone away and down, killing it instantly when foreign eyes touched it. Loki left a trail of false impressions along a dead spur. He kept walking.

Zeus felt the chaos marking buried beneath his skin tighten once toward a pressure in the distance that was not Sera.

He forced it still.

"Tohu is moving as well," he said.

No one asked how he knew.

Sera stood in the outer receiving hall of her territory with the recovery net already in place.

Displays tracked the residual trails bleeding out from the broken seam into older Continuum lanes. She sorted density clusters with careful designation. Intermediary offices received the bounty packets with no remark. Local operators remained quiet due to her temperament.

Veyth came at a brisk walk.

"He has reached the outer markers."

Sera did not turn. "Let him in."

The far end of the hall opened. Tohu entered without escort and without hurry. The scent of storm clung to him. He studied the recovery displays once, then dismissed them entirely.

"You lost them," he said.

"They ran," Sera said. "I am bringing them back."

"You held a residual mark that belongs to my early work and then allowed it to exit through a maintenance defect." Tohu’s voice remained even. "That is not a small failure."

"They are still within my greater reach."

"For now."

Sera turned to face him. "You have come to claim what you abandoned. Say it."

"I came because you converted my residue to contested inventory and then failed to maintain possession. I will not let the Compact or anyone else complete the collection while you edit your displays. Call off the scavengers. We recover the marked one first. The rest can be sorted."

"No."

The word was clear and final.

Tohu’s lips twitched. "No."

"They left under my claim. They remain my recovery. You may assist. You do not possess because you have delayed the assignment until now."

"You require my assistance in capturing them before someone smaller does."

"I require you to stop pretending to be my partner while waiting for my net to finish its work."

They stood in silence long enough for the nearest screen to register a new residual flicker far out on the older feeds.

Tohu spoke first. "Zeus bears the clearest mark. I want him intact."

"I want all nine intact," Sera said. "Especially him. If your agents impede my recovery, I will consider them interference."

"And if my presence is the only reason the Compact hesitates?"

"Then become useful and cease presenting yourself as partner in command."

Tohu laughed once beneath his breath. "You are furious."

"I am efficient."

"You are furious," he repeated. "Good. The anger will lend speed. Do not let it lend stupidity."

He turned away toward the far end of the hall without waiting for dismissal.

"I will run a parallel track on the residual signature. When I find him, you will hear me. Try not to lose the remainder while proving a point."

Sera watched him go. Then she opened the channel to recovery again and tightened all active lines by a measure.

The nine sensed the shift as they came out onto a dead junction above the gulf of fog.

Pressure built from two sides at once. One was Sera’s cold recovery pattern. The other was a cleaner, older recognition that pulled directly at Zeus’ chaos marking.

Wukong snarled. "Both of them."

Loki’s eyes narrowed. "She hunts. He hunts. We are no longer an escape. We are a race."

Athena pointed to a descending cut. "That will drop us into mixed traffic. Harder to track. Harder to breathe."

Zeus nodded. "Take it."

They dropped one after another into the thick fog. Sound became muffled. Vision shortened. Foreign lanes moved below like sluggish animals. Hermes killed their own residual trail as best he could. Kratos moved to the rear, daring anything to come too close.

Poseidon’s voice was low. "If they corner us, we fight."

"If they corner us, we choose which hunter reaches first," Hades said.

Zeus kept them moving until the fog opened onto a broken platform of unmarked stone. For the first time since the seam, no immediate display pressed against their backs. The relief was short-lived. Far behind them Sera’s net continued to close in increments. Far to the side Tohu’s awareness moved forward openly.

Sun Wukong planted his staff. "We require ground we can hold or a lane that swallows pursuit."

Odin listened to the deep Continuum and shook his head once. "No safe ground here. Only delay."

Zeus looked at the nine names still with him and at the dark lanes beyond the platform.

"Then we buy delay," he said. "And we make sure that we don’t fall into both their hands for as long as we can."

They left the platform at a run.

Behind them the two hunters continued to close on different axes, no longer polite, no longer patient, and no longer divided by displays or command lines.

The nine were free of Sera’s reach.

They were not free.
