Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition
Chapter 2554: Story 2555: The Voice Behind the Silence
The silver bells continued to echo across the Silent City.
Their deep, rhythmic tones rolled through every marble street like invisible chains. Thousands of citizens walked toward the floating palace without hesitation, their faces calm, empty, and devoid of emotion.
Victoria Kane watched the procession with growing concern.
"They aren’t being forced," she whispered.
"They believe this is what they should do."
Nox’Rath nodded gravely.
"That is the most dangerous prison."
"No walls."
"No chains."
"Only a belief that freedom is unnecessary."
Cole Mercer rested his hand on his rifle.
"I’ve fought zombies."
"I’ve fought monsters."
"But how do you fight an idea?"
Father Gabriel answered quietly.
"You don’t destroy it."
"You replace it with truth."
The companions joined the endless procession, blending among the silent citizens.
As they crossed a magnificent bridge of crystal suspended between floating islands, Victoria noticed statues lining both sides of the path.
Every statue depicted smiling men, women, and children.
Unlike the living citizens...
These faces were full of joy.
Lucas slowed beside one of them.
"They used to smile."
Dr. Evelyn carefully examined the inscription beneath the statue.
Dust covered most of the ancient letters, but she brushed them clean.
"In memory of the Festival of Voices."
She frowned.
"A festival?"
An elderly citizen walking nearby spoke without stopping.
"We no longer celebrate."
"Celebration causes distraction."
His words sounded rehearsed, as though repeated countless times.
Selene looked toward him.
"Who decided that?"
The old man answered immediately.
"The High Custodian."
No hesitation.
No doubt.
Only obedience.
At last, the procession reached the palace.
Its enormous gates opened without a sound.
Inside waited a breathtaking hall carved entirely from crystal.
Sunlight poured through its transparent walls, filling the chamber with dazzling beauty.
Yet the silence inside felt heavier than stone.
Thousands of citizens knelt together.
At the far end of the hall stood the white-robed figure Victoria had seen earlier.
His robes shimmered like polished moonlight.
Silver hair flowed over his shoulders, and a crystal staff rested in his hands.
His face appeared youthful.
Kind.
Almost peaceful.
Only his pale gray eyes seemed strangely empty.
He smiled warmly as Victoria entered.
"Welcome..."
"...Keeper of the First Dawn."
The companions instinctively reached for their weapons.
The man gently raised one hand.
"There is no need."
"I have been expecting you."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You know who I am."
"I know what you became."
He bowed respectfully.
"My name is Aurelius."
"I am the High Custodian of Asterion."
Dr. Evelyn studied him carefully.
"There is no darkness around him."
Nox’Rath’s expression remained unreadable.
"No..."
"...that is what worries me."
Aurelius turned toward the kneeling citizens.
"They no longer suffer."
"They no longer fear."
"They no longer hate."
With another graceful motion of his hand, the entire hall became perfectly still.
Even breathing seemed synchronized.
"Conflict ended the day emotions ended."
Victoria stared at him in disbelief.
"You took away their feelings."
"I freed them from pain."
He spoke the words with complete sincerity.
"The Endless Darkness feeds upon despair."
"I removed despair forever."
Father Gabriel slowly shook his head.
"You also removed love."
Aurelius smiled gently.
"Love creates loss."
"Loss creates grief."
"Grief creates despair."
"I simply ended the cycle."
Silence filled the chamber.
Victoria looked around the vast hall.
Children knelt beside their parents.
Friends stood shoulder to shoulder.
Yet no one reached for another’s hand.
No one comforted anyone.
They were alive.
But they were not truly living.
Suddenly, the Living Dawn within Victoria’s heart pulsed softly.
A faint golden light spread across the crystal floor.
One little girl near the front blinked.
For the first time, curiosity appeared in her eyes.
She looked toward Victoria.
Then she smiled.
It was small.
Barely noticeable.
But real.
Aurelius’s peaceful expression faltered.
The smile vanished from the child’s face almost immediately as she lowered her head again.
The High Custodian tightened his grip on the crystal staff.
"So..."
"...the Living Dawn can awaken forgotten hearts."
His empty gray eyes finally showed emotion.
Not anger.
Concern.
"You are far more dangerous than I imagined."
Far beneath the palace, hidden within the foundations of the Silent City, an ancient crystal began to glow with cold silver light.
Something had sensed the return of hope.
And it was beginning to awaken.
