Chapter 2555: Story 2556: The Heart Beneath the Silent City

  • Next Chapter

The ancient crystal hidden beneath the palace pulsed once.

A cold silver light spread through the foundations of the Silent City, traveling silently beneath every street, every tower, and every floating island. No one among the emotionless citizens noticed.

But Victoria Kane did.

The Living Dawn within her heart answered with a warm golden glow.

She looked toward the marble floor beneath her feet.

"Something just woke up."

Aurelius remained calm, though his grip tightened around the crystal staff.

"You were never meant to awaken it."

Nox’Rath slowly stepped beside Victoria.

His gray robes stirred although no wind blew within the crystal hall.

"I know that energy."

His expression darkened.

"It is neither the Endless Darkness..."

"...nor the First Light."

Dr. Evelyn Brooks quickly opened Elias Crow’s journal.

Silver letters raced across the page.

The Heart of Silence: A crystal forged from abandoned emotions. It feeds not upon hatred, but upon everything willingly surrendered.

Her eyes widened.

"They gave it their feelings."

Cole frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

The journal continued writing.

Every forgotten dream... every unspoken laugh... every buried tear became part of the crystal sleeping beneath the city.

Father Gabriel looked sorrowfully at the silent citizens.

"They believed they were escaping pain."

"They were unknowingly feeding something else."

Aurelius lowered his head.

"I know."

The companions turned toward him in surprise.

Victoria stepped forward.

"You know?"

He closed his eyes.

"I built the Heart of Silence."

Silence swept through the chamber.

Lucas Reed stared in disbelief.

"You created it?"

Aurelius nodded slowly.

"Three centuries ago."

"After the Great Fracture."

His voice remained steady, but sadness lingered beneath every word.

"Our world nearly destroyed itself."

"Wars."

"Greed."

"Hatred."

"I watched parents bury their children."

"I watched cities burn."

"I promised it would never happen again."

He gently placed his hand upon the crystal staff.

"So I searched for another way."

"I discovered the Heart."

"It could remove suffering."

Selene crossed her arms.

"But it removed everything."

"Not at first."

Aurelius’s calm expression finally cracked.

"The people felt peace."

"They smiled."

"They loved."

"But every emotion surrendered made the Heart stronger."

"It always demanded more."

Dr. Evelyn quietly whispered,

"It became addicted."

Nox’Rath nodded.

"Just as despair feeds the Endless Darkness..."

"...emptiness feeds the Heart of Silence."

Suddenly, the palace trembled.

A deep vibration echoed beneath the city.

The silver crystal below pulsed again.

This time the citizens all stopped breathing for a single terrifying second.

Then they inhaled together.

Perfectly synchronized.

Victoria felt a chill.

"They’re connected to it."

Aurelius answered softly,

"It keeps every heart beating."

"If it dies..."

"...I don’t know if they survive."

The revelation stunned everyone.

Destroying the crystal was no longer an option.

The Living Dawn glowed gently within Victoria.

She looked at the motionless faces surrounding her.

"They don’t need to be saved from a monster."

"They need to be separated from it."

The crystal beneath the palace suddenly released a beam of silver light that pierced every level of the city.

The marble floor cracked open.

From the depths rose a colossal crystal formation covered with thousands of glowing threads.

Each thread stretched into the chest of a citizen.

Every person in Asterion was bound to it.

The immense crystal slowly opened like a blooming flower.

At its center floated a young girl no older than twelve.

She slept peacefully inside a sphere of silver light.

Her heartbeat echoed throughout the city.

Aurelius fell to his knees.

His voice trembled for the first time in centuries.

"No..."

"It awakened her."

Victoria looked at the sleeping child.

"Who is she?"

Aurelius’s eyes filled with regret.

"My daughter..."

"...the first Guardian of the Heart."

As the child’s eyes slowly began to open, the silver crystal radiated across the entire realm of Asterion.

The fate of its people had never rested within a weapon.

It had rested within one sleeping soul.
