Chapter 2539: Story 2540: The Judgment of the First Guardian

  • Next Chapter

A silence of awe settled over Blackstone Ridge.

The colossal guardian remained upon one knee, its broken shield resting against the shattered earth. Silver light flowed gently through the ancient cracks in its stone body, while the faded emblem of the First Light glimmered beneath centuries of dust.

No one had expected this.

Not the defenders.

Not the Hollow King.

Not even Arkanis.

Victoria Kane slowly lowered the Dawnblade.

The white flames surrounding its blade softened, no longer burning with the fury of battle but with the quiet warmth of dawn.

Commander Selene Voss stared upward in disbelief.

"It... bowed."

Cole Mercer kept his glowing rifle trained on the giant.

"I’ve never seen an enemy surrender before the fight even started."

Dr. Evelyn Brooks clutched Elias Crow’s journal tightly.

"I don’t think it’s surrender."

"I think it’s waiting."

The ancient guardian slowly raised its head.

Its silver eyes met Victoria’s.

Then, inside every living mind, a calm voice echoed.

"Bearer of the Last Light..."

"...speak your judgment."

Victoria hesitated.

"What judgment?"

Arkanis answered from within the First Prison.

"Long ago..."

"...the Seven Guardians swore that if corruption ever claimed us..."

"...only the Last Marshal could decide our fate."

Father Gabriel looked toward the imprisoned ancient.

"You entrusted humanity with your final judgment."

Arkanis replied quietly.

"Because only those born after our failure could choose without pride."

The Hollow King’s furious laughter shook the mountain.

"You still cling to hope!"

"They are monsters now!"

"They devoured entire civilizations!"

"They deserve only destruction!"

The kneeling guardian did not react.

It remained perfectly still.

Victoria stepped closer.

As she approached, the Crown of the Black Star shimmered brighter.

The Dawnblade released thirteen thin rays of white light that gently touched the guardian’s enormous chest.

Suddenly—

A vision flooded Victoria’s mind.

She saw a world before history.

Green continents stretched beneath brilliant skies.

Seven radiant beings stood together beside a great pillar of living light.

Among them was Arkanis.

Beside him stood another guardian whose smile radiated warmth.

Kaelor.

The First Guardian.

The future Devourer.

They laughed together while guiding the first rivers across an empty world.

Then darkness fell from the heavens.

A living shadow without shape.

It whispered.

It promised endless knowledge.

One by one, the Seven resisted.

But Kaelor stepped forward first to shield his brothers.

The darkness entered him.

He screamed.

Arkanis and the others chained him beneath the mountain—not out of hatred, but out of love.

The vision vanished.

Victoria opened her eyes.

Tears glistened upon her face.

"He didn’t choose corruption."

"He chose to protect them."

Arkanis closed his ancient eye.

"Yes."

The Hollow King roared in anger.

"He still became the Devourer!"

Victoria turned toward him.

"So did you."

Silence swept across the battlefield.

For the first time, the Hollow King had no answer.

Roland Thorne stepped beside Victoria.

"I believed power made us monsters."

He looked toward the kneeling guardian.

"But sometimes..."

"...sacrifice does."

Victoria walked until she stood before the towering guardian’s face.

She raised the Dawnblade—not to strike, but to touch its forehead.

The Crown blazed like the rising sun.

"I will not judge you by the darkness that imprisoned you."

"I judge you by the light you tried to protect."

The Dawnblade released a brilliant wave of white and gold.

It spread through the guardian’s stone body.

The crimson corruption hidden deep within its ancient heart cracked apart.

Silver light burst from every fracture.

The giant released a deep, mournful breath.

Then, for the first time in countless ages...

It smiled.

Far across the horizon, the five remaining Fallen Guardians suddenly stopped their march.

One after another, they turned toward Blackstone Ridge.

The silver light within their eyes flickered.

Not with obedience.

With remembrance.

High above the battlefield, Arkanis’s voice trembled with hope.

"The First Light..."

"...has begun to return."

But deep beneath the broken prison, beyond even the Devourer’s ancient chains, a far darker presence stirred.

It had watched the judgment.

It had felt the light awaken.

And for the first time since creation...

The Endless Darkness opened its eyes.
