Chapter 383: The Cleanup Has Begun
Chapter 383: The Cleanup Has Begun
On the street, people were running back and forth, trying to escape from the chase of the Crimson Arc Guild members.
"P-Please... do not kill me..."
"I-I surrender."
Many awakeners dropped their weapons and lay on the ground. Fear gripped their hearts like a vice.
Those that easily surrendered were arrested and taken to the dungeon. As for those that tried to fight back, their end was already decided.
The Crimson Arc Guild had no intention of showing mercy today.
For the past couple of days, Mantis Town had endured too many hidden knives.
Spies had entered.
Rumors had spread.
Secret signals had been sent.
People had tried to stir riots, bribe guards, and turn the Mantis Men against the Crimson Arc Guild.
Inside a dilapidated building, three people hid in the shadows, their eyes locked on the small opening on the wall.
"Have you sent the signal?" one of them asked with a shaky voice.
"Yes. Yes. I have sent it three times already," the second figure replied impatiently.
He had already heard this question countless times, and yet he was being questioned again.
"We cannot stay here," the third figure whispered. "This is too open."
"Then where do you suggest we hide?" the first person asked with irritation.
The Crimson Arc Guild was purging every strange person in the town and those that had caused trouble in the past couple of days.
They had originally believed Mantis Town was close to falling apart.
They had believed the Crimson Arc Guild would be too busy defending the town to search every street.
They had believed the chaos they planted would become their cover.
But they had been wrong.
The Crimson Arc Guild did not collapse.
Instead, they came with sharper eyes, colder blades, and a list of names that made every hidden spy tremble.
Listening to the question, the third person frowned and wanted to respond when numerous heavy footsteps came from the distance.
"T-They are here..."
The three hid in the corner, holding their breath while praying the guards would not check the dilapidated building.
Thud! Thud!
For a moment, nothing happened. It was as if the guards had gone, but just then, heavy footsteps drew nearer to the building.
The three hiding figures were already soaked in sweat. Their hands slowly reached out to their weapons.
Creak! Creak!
The soft sound of wood creaking echoed in the still atmosphere.
Heartbeats pounded heavily like war drums.
From the small crack on the wall, they could already see the guards reaching out to open the door.
"Now!" a voice screamed.
Three spies rushed out of their hiding spot and swung their weapons.
Unfortunately, what welcomed them was a massive shield.
Bang!
The three were sent flying, crashing into the wooden wall, and sharp groans escaped from their lips.
Dust fell from the broken ceiling.
The rotten boards shook violently.
Before the three could steady themselves, several Crimson Arc Guild members rushed in with their weapons drawn.
Riven closed the distance quickly and swung his blade.
"Nooooo!"
Blood splattered on the wall, and the scream vanished. Looking at the corpses, Riven did not have any change in his expression as he walked out of the dilapidated building.
"Let us continue. Someone should tell people to clean their bodies," he said sharply. "We need to complete the cleanup today."
With that, Riven led a portion of his squad toward another direction.
After meeting Solenne, Riven learned the good news. For the past couple of days, their guild had been in a bind.
They could not go out completely to eradicate the vermin causing trouble in their town.
Every movement had to be calculated.
Every order had to consider the reaction of the outside factions.
But who would have thought the Grim Reaper would handle all the factions hiding outside the town?
With the factions gone, they had nothing to fear. Thus, they began the purge.
This was no longer a warning.
This was a slaughter.
Anyone who had taken Mantis Town’s patience as weakness would understand the price today.
In another part of the town, a young woman was moving through the narrow alley, trying to bypass the patrolling guards.
"Why does it seem like they are after me?" she whispered and took another turn.
Whoosh!
She jumped over a crudely made fence and entered the compound. She looked around but could not find anywhere to hide.
All the doors had been shut.
"She’s here!" a voice shouted.
Listening to the voice, she was furious. She had tried to avoid them, but to her shock, she was discovered every time.
Without hesitation, she fled.
"Do not let her go."
Mantis Men and Crimson Arc Guild members raced after her.
Running on the street, the young woman’s heart was boiling with rage.
’Am I going to lose this body once again?’
She was unwilling, but with the enemies closing in on her, she knew her chance of escape was close to zero.
The pursuit was too tight.
Every alley had guards.
Every corner had Mantis Men waiting.
Even the rooftops were being watched.
It was as if someone had already predicted the route she would take.
Just as she prepared to take another alley, three Mantis Men elders appeared before her.
"Damn it." She halted her escape as she searched for a way out.
Unfortunately, every escape route had been covered.
Seeing this, a deep sigh escaped from her mouth.
"Do not think this is over," she said coldly.
She looked in the direction of the Crimson Arc Guild headquarters, and her eyes flashed with deep hatred.
"We shall meet again," she whispered, and her body began to break down.
At a visible speed, it withered, turning into bones. Even her bones were not spared.
Her skin dried first.
Her hair fell away like dead grass.
Her flesh shrank against her bones before crumbling into gray dust.
The guards watching the scene felt their scalps turn numb.
The Mantis Men elders raised their sharp arms, ready to attack, but there was nothing to attack anymore.
In less than thirty seconds, there was nothing left behind.
Seeing this, the Mantis Men elders and the Crimson Arc Guild members were stunned.
"What just happened?" one of them asked with a trembling voice.
"How would we know?"
"We need to report this immediately."
Everyone nodded.
This had gone beyond their understanding.
If Thoren was present, he would not be surprised by what happened.
Because this was Cressida.
