Chapter 382: The Strange Silence on the Central Street
Chapter 382: The Strange Silence on the Central Street
Inside a small, dark chamber, three people lay on the ground with light groans escaping from their mouths.
Compared to a couple of days ago, their skin had dried, and their hair was disheveled. Their sharp gazes were now dull, and their dried lips were filled with cracks.
They were Cyras, Garric, and Celene.
They thought they could capture the Grim Reaper, but who would have thought the moment they entered Mantis Town, their fate had been sealed?
The three had already accepted their fate and were already waiting for death.
But to their shock, the Grim Reaper seemed not to care about them, abandoning them in the small chamber after putting them in chains.
Now, they only lay quietly on the cold floor, listening to their own weak breathing.
Creak!
The door to the small chamber was pushed open, and bright moonlight rushed in.
Immediately, the three shut their eyes for a moment before they slowly opened them, adjusting to the sudden brightness.
When they saw the figure before them, their eyes widened for a moment before they became dull once again.
"You are in luck," Thoren said softly.
Clank! Clank!
Quickly, he released the three from their chains and walked out of the small chamber.
Looking at his departing back, Cyras, Garric, and Celene were stunned.
They were already prepared for the worst, but Thoren’s action left them stunned.
For a brief moment, none of them moved. They could not understand what had just happened.
Was this another trick?
Was he moving them somewhere else to kill them?
Or had the Grim Reaper truly decided to spare them?
Looking at each other, the three quickly removed the rags from their mouths and left the small chamber.
Their legs were weak.
Their bodies were stiff.
Every step made their knees tremble slightly.
Seated in the Black Water lobby, Thoren was having a sumptuous breakfast.
He frequently nodded his head in appreciation.
Hmm?
When the three saw him eating, they were stunned for a moment before they forcefully swallowed the lumps in their throats.
When was the last time they had such a sumptuous meal?
They could not remember.
Perhaps, when they were on the surface.
The table before Thoren was filled with warm food, roasted meat, fresh bread, fruit, soup, and clean water.
A faint aroma drifted through the lobby, entering their noses and attacking their empty stomachs.
To those who had been chained inside a dark chamber for days, the sight was almost cruel.
Recovering from her shock, Celene took a deep breath and asked, "What do you want from us?"
"I believe you must have confirmed all the information we gave you was valid."
"You are right." Thoren nodded and took a sip from his glass of wine. "And that is why you are still standing."
"I am in a good mood. I will not make it difficult for you," he continued as he chewed a piece of meat.
Garric wanted to scoff but controlled the impulse. Right now, they were nothing but prisoners of the Grim Reaper.
The calmness in Thoren’s voice made the three even more uneasy.
If he shouted, threatened, or mocked them, they might have understood his intention.
But this casual tone made it impossible to guess what he was planning.
"You came from Dung Beetle Town, right?" he asked, raising his head to look at the three.
"Yes," Cyras nodded, curiosity flashing in his eyes.
Not only him, Garric and Celene were also curious. They wanted to know what he was trying to do.
"Good. The four of us are going to go on a quick journey," he continued with casualness.
"Take your seats and try to recover your strength. Behind the counter, you will find food and water."
Hmm?
The three stared at each other, unsure of whether to believe him or not.
Without thinking too much about it, Celene walked casually toward the counter.
And truly, behind the counter was food arranged neatly.
She stared at the food and swallowed hard.
She wanted to maintain a semblance of dignity, but her stomach did not share her sentiment.
It growled.
Listening to her stomach, her face reddened, and she quickly picked up a food plate and departed.
On seeing this, Garric and Cyras could not believe their eyes. Quickly, they rushed to pick their food.
Even if they were going to die at the Grim Reaper’s hands, right now, the most important thing was to eat.
For a while, no one spoke.
Only the sound of eating filled the lobby.
Cyras ate too fast and almost choked, forcing himself to drink water slowly.
Garric tore into the meat like a starving beast, forgetting all the pride he had carried when he first entered Mantis Town.
Celene tried to eat more slowly, but her trembling fingers betrayed her hunger.
Thoren watched them for a moment before returning to his breakfast.
While Thoren and the others were having a sumptuous breakfast, a strange silence permeated the central street.
People walking on the street noticed the strange smiles plastered on the Crimson Arc Guild members’ faces.
Even the Mantis Men were filled with confidence.
The change was too obvious.
Yesterday, many guards looked tense and exhausted.
Today, they stood straighter.
Their gazes were sharper.
Their steps carried quiet confidence, as if a heavy stone had finally been removed from their chests.
Inside a tavern, everyone was discussing the strange atmosphere.
"Who can tell me what the hell is going on?" a thick voice asked.
The town had been on edge the previous day, and today, it was as if what happened yesterday was nothing but an illusion.
Many that were ready to fish in troubled waters could not help but halt their plans.
"I think the Crimson Arc Guild might have finally decided to give up on protecting the Grim Reaper," a figure said, his voice filled with uncertainty.
"I disagree. I do not think they will ever do so," another figure responded.
Quickly, the tavern was filled with various loud voices as they debated what the hell was going on.
Bang!
The tavern entrance door was pushed open, and a disheveled young man entered.
"Not good!" he shouted. "The Crimson Arc Guild has begun the hunt."
Hmm?
For a moment, the tavern was deathly quiet as everyone tried to process the news.
Ahhh! Ahhh!
Suddenly, a miserable scream came from outside, making everyone inside the tavern shiver.
Yesterday was bloody because of the riot, but today, when everyone thought nothing of such would happen, who would have thought it was the Crimson Arc Guild that would come for the killing?
Suddenly, another figure entered the tavern. "We cannot stay here any longer. The Crimson Arc Guild has gone crazy."
What?
