Chapter 323 - 170: Long-Range Bombardment (2)

He had already warned them. Fearing a surprise attack by the Undead, he had specifically ordered the generals and Clan Leaders to arrange for scouts. For this to happen anyway was something he found difficult to accept.

The generals and Clan Leaders lowered their heads, not daring to look at Palamede. This was their failure.

But they felt wronged. They had also seen the green sun rising into the sky moments ago, but they hadn’t expected it to actually be an attack from the Undead. Who knew the Undead were capable of such Magic?

Fortunately, while the enemy’s attack looked ferocious, it wasn’t very lethal. Few people had died. Other than a few unlucky souls who were crushed to death in their sleep, the other Warriors had, at most, sustained minor injuries that wouldn’t affect their combat ability.

"What kind of attack was that? Who knows? Where is the intelligence report?" Palamede calmed himself, no longer pursuing the issue of the scouts, and changed the subject.

The attack was a bit frightening. Its range was quite large, and it had been launched from a distance. The intelligence reports on the Undead contained no mention of such an attack. If they had known about this attack method in advance, they would have been prepared; they wouldn’t have made camp so densely and brazenly. Weren’t they just giving the enemy a perfect opportunity to strike?

The generals and Clan Leaders looked at each other, one and all shaking their heads. They had no idea.

"You... How much else is there that we don’t know? Do you intend to fight this war like this? By charging in like a bunch of blind men?" Palamede’s temper flared again, and he smashed the table in front of him, roaring.

In that moment, the Slaughter Conqueror’s aura exploded, chilling everyone present into silence. Not a single person dared to provoke him.

He roared a few more times, but seeing everyone below him standing there so obediently, he felt it was pointless. He sat back down in his chair with a huff, panting heavily and feeling a bit pathetic.

’What was I thinking, wanting to rely on these people to storm the Central Zone? Was I out of my mind? These morons can’t even gather proper intelligence. Trying to take the Central Zone with them is a suicide mission.’

’Who is the enemy? What are their capabilities? How many troops do they have? What are their attack methods? Isn’t this the most basic intelligence that should have been scouted out ahead of time? But what is wrong with these people? Do they think the Undead are just a bunch of Skeletons?’

’No wonder the two previous Vanguard Armies were defeated. With intelligence work this shoddy, it would be a miracle if they *didn’t* fail!’

’I’m afraid I’ve been dragged into a mess this time. I might even meet my end here.’

The war had to continue. Their armies had already marched out; they couldn’t just disband because of a single enemy attack. And he, Palamede, was not about to give up the prize now within his grasp. What he needed now was to think calmly and sort things out.

The attack wasn’t sustained. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be sitting here in a meeting with this bunch of morons.

Since it wasn’t sustained, did that mean the Undead were also unable to unleash this Magic Attack on a large scale?

’That’s good news.’

The Undead hadn’t mounted a large-scale assault either. Their goal, it seemed, wasn’t to start the battle tonight.

Palamede quickly finished his analysis of the situation and began to ponder how to respond.

...

"Boss, what happened? Where are we going now?" Zhang Peng asked, approaching Li Ziyu.

"Heh, I just set off a ’firework’ over their main camp. Too bad I had to leave in a hurry. I didn’t get to see if it was pretty. Tsk, a real shame. We’ll proceed as planned. Let’s move to the next spot." Li Ziyu was still shaking his hand; his palm felt ice-cold.

"A ’firework’?" Zhang Peng blinked, then suddenly recalled something. His eyes flew wide open; he now knew what Li Ziyu had been doing.

Back when they were fighting the Jackal Wolfmen, Li Ziyu had used a certain Weapon to directly attack the Jackal Wolfman Fortress. This time, he had probably used that same Weapon.

’No wonder Li Ziyu didn’t bring many Undead. With that Weapon, he was all that was needed. Man, I should have figured it out sooner.’

With that realization, Zhang Peng no longer hesitated. He gave an order to the Gophers to drive the fortress to the next location.

Earlier in the day, Li Ziyu had gone over the plan with him. They had designated several locations. If the tactic was successful, they would move to the next position and continuously harass the enemy.

Meteor Soul couldn’t be unleashed consecutively. The Wandering Souls consumed Soul Power to cast it and needed time to recover. They had to recuperate before they could release the next one. Li Ziyu had communicated with them and learned it would take about an hour before they could unleash Meteor Soul again.

This was equivalent to a one-hour cooldown time. Moreover, if cast at one-hour intervals, the power of Meteor Soul would inevitably be reduced. The more times it was unleashed, the weaker it would become. The Wandering Souls’ Soul Power didn’t recover as quickly as one might imagine.

But that was enough. Li Ziyu planned to unleash four waves of Meteor Soul and then retreat to the Undead Fortress.

He had specifically chosen this time frame. The hours before dawn were when people were most fatigued and needed rest the most. He was unleashing Meteor Soul precisely to keep the enemy’s Warriors from getting any proper sleep. By the time he left, the sun would practically be rising.

’Heh heh, let’s see what the Alliance Army does then—whether they attack or not.’

Even Li Ziyu hadn’t expected his plan to be so successful. He had been afraid that he would be discovered after the first attack, which would have ruined the rest of his game. But evidently, he had succeeded. The enemy’s scouts had failed to find him.

As for whether scouts might enter the tunnels, he wasn’t worried at all. This was the Gophers’ domain down here, especially with the Gopher Fortress around. What was there to fear? ’If the enemy really comes down here, wouldn’t that be delightful? The underground is a giant labyrinth. They might just get trapped and die.’
