Global Lords: The Undead's Mobile Fortress

Chapter 309 165: Night Battle (3)

  • Next Chapter

Just as the Lizardmen and the Headhunter Race tried to fight back, a fresh volley of arrows flew in, stopping them from killing the Desert Wolves.

The Warriors of the Cancerous Tumor Alliance Army needed to rely on torches and other sources of light to see in the dark. The Undead, however, did not. They could easily identify enemies by their life auras, as if they were equipped with night-vision goggles. Darkness was no obstacle for them.

The Alliance Army had no idea how many enemies lurked in the darkness and could only remain on the defensive. They tried to retaliate with arrows and thrown weapons, but the Desert Wolves were too fast. They would often flash past in an instant, blending into the darkness and making them incredibly difficult to target.

If it were daytime, they wouldn't have cared much about the Skeleton Beasts. But this was a moonless night.

"Fall back! Back to the camp!" Seeing the situation turning against them, the Headhunter Commander immediately gave the order. The Headhunter Race led the retreat toward the camp.

The camp had torches and bonfires, making it much brighter. Fighting there was obviously more advantageous than fighting out in the open.

After the Headhunters retreated, the Lizardmen immediately followed, but the Goblin Commander hesitated.

'Momonai and the Headhunter Commander don't understand goblins, but I know my people all too well,' he thought. 'As long as the meat wall holds, they can fight. But the moment a retreat to the camp is mentioned, that wall will be gone. Forget about stopping the Skeleton Beasts—knowing the goblins' pathetic nature, it's far more likely to cause a total rout.'

'Having the goblins maintain the meat wall while slowly falling back is simply unrealistic. They don't have that level of discipline; they can only be led with vague commands.'

'The problem is, not retreating isn't an option now. The Headhunters and the Lizardmen have already fallen back. If the goblins are left holding off the enemy, the full force of the Undead assault will land on them. I don't even dare to imagine what the losses will be.'

'Whatever,' he reasoned. 'The retreat wasn't my idea; it was the Headhunter Commander's. So we'll retreat. If the losses are too heavy, he can be the one to explain it to the high command. It won't be my fault, anyway.'

Having already concocted an excuse to absolve himself of blame, the Goblin Commander began to fall back while finally giving the other goblins the order to retreat into the camp.

When the order came, the goblins at the rear, who had yet to engage the Undead, bolted without a second thought. They were astonishingly fast. More and more goblins routed toward the camp, and the meat wall dissolved.

The Frenzied Skeleton Giant Tusked Boars flared with fiery light, ready to give chase, but the Dark Skeletons ordered them to halt their pursuit and prepare for a second Charge. As for the crazed goblins, the Undead paid them no mind—after all, they weren't their problem.

The crazed goblins howled as they chased their own kind, stampeding toward the camp.

"Don't let those crazed goblins in! Kill them!" the Headhunter Commander shouted when he saw them nearing the camp.

'Are you kidding me? If those things get inside, they'll cause chaos! Wouldn't that just create an opening for an Undead sneak attack?'

'We have to take advantage of the fact that the Undead aren't in pursuit. We'll eliminate these liabilities first, then rally our forces to deal with the Undead.'

The Headhunters and Lizardmen nocked their bows and hurled their Long Spears, killing all the crazed goblins that were chasing them from behind, right outside the camp.

"Where are the Undead?" Momonai looked outside the camp. There were fiery glows in the distance; they had to be the Undead Beasts.

However, those creatures didn't advance. Instead, they retreated a short distance.

Meanwhile, the Headhunter Clan People kept watch on their surroundings while punching and kicking the goblins, forcing them to the front. It didn't matter if they could form a meat wall again; at the very least, they could briefly block the Undead.

'If the goblins die, they die. But their deaths had to be worth something, creating at least a few openings for the rest of us to attack.'

'The goblins had performed quite well just now, blocking the enemy's Charge. So what if a good number of them had inexplicably gone mad in the end? That wasn't a major issue.'

"The enemy's Charge is coming! Prepare for battle!"

Momonai guessed the intentions of the Frenzied Skeleton Giant Tusked Boars and shouted, organizing his men to brace for the second Charge from the Giant Tusked Boars.
