Chapter 424: Chapter 221: This Gift is Incredibly Prestigious
Several courses and many drinks later...
The meal stretched on for over three hours. This was mainly because the two elders, having had a bit of Maotai, had somehow steered the conversation to their past.
This got the two elders fired up, and they pulled Su Chen into the conversation. Su Chen, for his part, was naturally curious about what that era was like.
Whether the two elders were doing it intentionally or not was unclear, but they shared some little-known secrets. Well... "little-known" might be an understatement; these were secrets known only to a very select few.
Every single revelation was explosive enough to cause a stir even today.
Of course, Su Chen also heard some amusing stories from the two elders, especially when Elder Jiang started spilling anecdotes from Elder Xiao’s youth.
That really opened the floodgates. The two elders began to good-naturedly expose each other’s past foibles. While they were just minor incidents from their youth, hearing them from these two distinguished men made them fascinating stories.
During the meal, Su Chen also endured some good-natured torment from Elder Jiang, who was relentlessly pitching his granddaughter to him. It very much felt like he had already made up his mind about Su Chen.
Thankfully, Elder Xiao noticed Su Chen’s predicament and steered the conversation elsewhere, allowing Su Chen to escape.
He hadn’t eaten much of the food, but he’d certainly had his fill of some well-aged gossip.
"Elders, it’s getting late. I should be heading back," Su Chen said as he stood up.
Elder Xiao glanced at his watch. It was already 10:35 PM. Ordinarily, he would have been asleep by this time.
Glancing at his old friend beside him, Elder Xiao finally replied, "All right. It is getting late. Let’s leave it at that for today."
Between Su Chen and the two elders, they had only finished one bottle of Maotai over the course of the evening. Averaging out to just a few small glasses each, none of them were drunk, just slightly flushed.
Just as Elder Xiao was about to get up, Elder Jiang suddenly spoke from the side. "Old Xiao, are you forgetting something?"
Hearing this, Elder Xiao froze for a second. But when he saw Elder Jiang tap the table twice, he immediately remembered.
He lightly tapped his own forehead. "Ah, you really have to admit when you’re getting old. How could I have forgotten about that?"
He immediately called in Huang Feng, who was standing outside. After whispering a couple of sentences in his ear, Huang Feng promptly turned and left the room, heading toward the third courtyard at the rear of the property.
Su Chen, standing to one side, was completely baffled. He had no idea what the two elders were plotting, but he had a strong feeling it had something to do with him.
Huang Feng was gone and back in a flash. When he returned, he was holding an exquisite-looking box.
Before Su Chen could even process what was happening, the exquisite box was placed on the table in front of him.
"Master Xiao, what’s this?" Su Chen asked, looking at him in utter astonishment. ’A little gift for me?’
He had arrived empty-handed; leaving with a gift in tow felt improper. The thought made Su Chen feel a bit awkward.
Elder Xiao jutted his chin toward the box on the table, gesturing for Su Chen to open it.
Elder Jiang, however, was more direct. "Don’t just stand there dawdling. Open it and you’ll see what’s inside."
"Uh..." Hearing that, Su Chen stopped overthinking it. ’Just like Elder Jiang said, I’ll know what it is once I open it!’
When Su Chen opened the box, he saw a car key nestled inside. The emblem on the key fob made him stare, dumbfounded.
"A Hongqi?" He only recognized it because he’d gotten a good look at the brand when he rode in Elder Jiang’s car earlier. Otherwise, he might not have identified it at first glance.
"A custom Hongqi N701. Same model as Old Xiao’s personal car," Elder Jiang explained, clearing up Su Chen’s confusion.
"The same model as your car, Elder? And you’re giving it to me? This is... this is too much!" Su Chen swallowed hard. It would be an outright lie to say he didn’t want it.
Never mind anything else, just being seen driving this car would be a huge status symbol. Of course, that only applied to those in the know. Anyone else would probably just assume it was a standard Hongqi sedan.
After all, the Hongqi N701 had a nickname: the "Presidential Limousine."
Elder Xiao shot Elder Jiang an annoyed look, as if chiding him for revealing everything so quickly. He had been hoping to tease Su Chen a little longer.
"You rascal, benefiting so much and still playing coy. If you don’t want it, then give it back!" Elder Xiao grumbled, making a show of reaching for the key in Su Chen’s hand.
Seeing this, Su Chen quickly retreated two steps, clutching the key tightly. A smug look on his face, he said, "Elder, there are no take-backs on gifts!"
"I love this gift. Thank you, Elders!"
Seeing Su Chen’s delighted and smug expression, Elder Xiao and Elder Jiang exchanged a look, and smiles spread across their faces.
"The car is parked in the garage outside. Huang Feng will show you to it. Old Jiang and I won’t see you out, so off you go!"
Su Chen understood this to mean Elder Jiang was staying the night. Not one to linger, he bid the two elders farewell and followed Huang Feng outside.
Watching Su Chen’s departing figure, Elder Xiao turned to his old friend. "Are you really serious about introducing your precious granddaughter to Xiaochen?"
Elder Jiang, being a shrewd man himself, naturally understood the subtext of Old Xiao’s question. At their level, the marriages of their children were almost always a matter of matching social standing. It was rare to marry someone from outside their circle, no matter how capable that person might be.
