From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 939 - 939: The Seventh Stake Serves One House
Ty learned the roadback's name when it coughed and sent a kitchen scoop into his eye socket.
Wood struck bone. His skull swung inside Jade's coat while every pot beyond the nursery rolled across what had been a corridor wall.
Meya caught her bad forearm against her belt.
"Orra coughs before rolling, so brace red ropes."
Ty worked the scoop loose with his teeth.
"Is Orra the creature or this moving wall?"
"Orra carries us, and Rillhold covers her back."
Harven checked the hidden gray cord beneath the open stake bed.
"Kavel keeps trying to peel us from Orra."
That answered three questions and made the fourth worse. Ty had landed on an animal large enough to carry homes across a world where floors changed their minds.
Meya shortened his chain collar by one link before allowing Harven to lift the nursery hatch. Jade remained tied at the waist, Nessa at both shoulders. Ty's right hand stayed between two iron rings while three ribs traveled in separate loops behind them.
Kipra held Jori's knot through the opening.
"Jori's cord crosses Harven's kitchen toward spine gallery."
"Mark every bend and touch no black metal."
Kipra marked the cord blue. Meya left her with the younger children and two roof workers, then followed Harven down a ladder built through the kitchen's current floor.
Jade lowered Ty's skull after her, with his ribs clicking along three different walls.
Cupboards covered every kitchen surface. Each door carried a wooden latch and a colored dot. A cook pulled a pot from the cupboards marked red and kicked them closed before Orra's next breath changed the hang of the ladles.
Nessa watched the utensils turn.
"Your kitchen carries cupboards for every possible direction."
Harven ducked beneath a bolted table.
"We own one kitchen, and its cupboards travel."
The gray cord ran behind the oven box, through a sleeping tier, and into a service shaft lined with hand loops. Families waited there with repair marks tied to their doors. One room leaned hard enough that a woman cooked with both feet inside a wall strap. Across from her, an old man slept flat under a ceiling net while two grandchildren played on the surface he had stopped using.
Through an outer shutter, Orra's back curved away beneath rows of anchored houses. Pale plates along the animal's hide lifted as she breathed. Farther out, pieces of a stone island moved in three directions at once. A strip of trees remained attached to one piece until the roots pulled free and vanished upward.
Harven closed the shutter.
"Lower current reaches Orra by third bell, and loose views do not strengthen walls."
Meya kept following the blue chalk. Her tied forearm pulled toward the nursery they had left above and behind.
The spine gallery opened around seven stake wells. Six held pale bone shafts wrapped in iron rings. Ropes left each well in bundles labeled with rooms, kitchens, clinic beds, and sleeping tiers. Workers shifted wooden pegs as Orra's breathing moved weight across Rillhold.
The seventh well held a black stake.
No iron wrapped it. Square bites marked the shaft near its base, and a gray surface moved under the black whenever the lamps swung.
Ty's shadow reached the stake before his chain did.
It slid across the gallery floor, climbed the well, and disappeared beneath the first square bite. His right hand pulled against its collar after the shadow was already gone.
Nessa's strapped arm turned toward the same well.
"That stake carries prison temper beneath its coating."
Jade tightened Ty's coat belt.
"Nobody touches it before we count occupied rooms."
"A shaving identifies which prison route supplied it."
"A shaving can wait until the people hanging from it stop moving."
Ty followed the cord with his green eye. It entered the black stake's socket and continued under the gallery toward a raised house with shuttered windows.
"Jori's line crosses the stake and continues onward."
A man at the central load table looked up from seven columns of wooden counters. His left boot was strapped to the floor. His right knee floated above the table as if sitting somewhere else.
"Meya, repair access ends outside these crossing wells."
"My nursery damage uncovered an unlisted cord tied by my missing brother."
The man pushed himself upright against the good leg.
"Ruvan Bale, crossing loadmaster. Every foreign bone leaves these wells before Orra coughs another public line loose."
Ty rotated his skull toward him.
"Ty, damaged foreign bone, and your seventh well already has my shadow."
Ruvan saw the shadow entering the black shaft. He shoved three counters from the seventh column into the sixth.
Homes above them groaned. Harven's kitchen rope snapped tight in the shaft.
"Return those counters before my wife's compartment loses its red wall."
"The seventh stake is taking excess during Orra's cough, so I am spreading the load."
Meya put Jori's blue marked cord across Ruvan's table.
"Show me the work order that placed this line below my nursery."
Ruvan unlocked a drawer with the key sewn into his boot strap. The order inside carried Rillhold's crossing seal, his thumb mark, and a clean black impression from the replacement stake.
The oldest public stake had been removed for resurfacing eight days earlier. Jori's crew took it down Orra's west flank. The replacement arrived before their scheduled return.
No crew names appeared under the delivery entry.
Meya held the paper near Ruvan's face.
"You accepted a replacement while every worker carrying the old stake remained missing."
"I accepted the seventh support before lower current reached a settlement with six."
"You accepted a clean order with the names scraped away."
"I kept three hundred rooms attached to Orra while search crews found empty lines, six abandoned harnesses, and no old stake before the crossing deadline."
His answer had weight because the gallery groaned around it. Ty could hear six public stakes working. Each ring knocked at a different pace, sharing bad down across people who had learned how much drift a meal or bed could survive.
The seventh made no sound.
Orra coughed again.
Harven's kitchen tier tore away from one wall peg. A loaded rope crossed the gallery above Jade and pulled toward the black stake.
Ty sent his loose rib into the rope bundle. The rib caught the kitchen line while his pinned right hand grabbed the sixth stake's frame.
Two pieces of him accepted different floors. His rib fell toward Harven's kitchen while his hand fell toward the sixth well. Across the gap, the chain stayed level for one strange beat, and the green pressure inside Ty's chest stretched across both directions.
Jade shouted through the pull.
"Ty, your right hand is closing after the kitchen rope stopped."
He told the hand to release. The command reached his rib, which opened around the loaded rope.
Harven's kitchen dropped half a body length.
Meya caught the line with her good arm. Ruvan drove his floating knee beneath the sixth table brace. Nessa hooked the recovered field finger around the kitchen rope, and its stored grip closed before her cage arm reached the black well.
Ty tried again, looking only at his right hand.
The fingers opened. Jade pulled his rib collar tighter before the bone released the kitchen line.
Workers reseated the wall peg. The kitchen settled against its red rope, leaving one cupboard hanging open in the shaft.
Ty's green eye lost the gallery.
He saw Jade's coat from inside it and knew the hand holding his chain mattered. Her name arrived after Harven's, after Ruvan's, after the color of the seventh stake.
Jade pressed two fingers against his jaw.
"Tell me my name before you divide another bone."
"Jade. Your name is Jade, and I needed longer than I should have."
Her grip loosened by less than an inch.
Nessa stared at the black stake.
"Your skeleton accepted both directions before your soul followed either one."
"I would prefer my soul remain attached to the majority vote."
Meya pointed at his collared ribs.
"Then you divide nothing else inside my settlement."
Ruvan returned the three counters to the seventh column. Harven's kitchen held. The black stake stayed quiet while Ty's shadow remained inside it.
Jade pulled the load tally from beneath Ruvan's order.
Six columns listed public sections. The seventh held one entry with no family count, clinic mark, or worker share.
Private calibration house.
She carried the tally to the shuttered house above the black well. Its floor remained flat while every neighboring walkway leaned. A cup sat unstrapped behind one window, its water level straight beneath the sill.
Harven looked from the cup to his kitchen rope.
"My wife cooks sideways so an empty house can test perfect down."
Ruvan climbed after them with his bad knee trailing toward the table.
"The replacement order required stable ballast before public load transfer."
"Who occupies the ballast house after the test finishes?"
"The order supplied its lock, and nobody in Rillhold received the key."
Nessa lifted her cutter with her good hand. Jade stepped between the blade and the door.
"We open the house before anyone cuts the stake beneath it."
"Lower current may seal the route around Orra."
Ty felt both priorities pull almost as hard as the separate floors.
"Meya's cord enters the house, so opening it answers all three arguments first."
Meya placed Jori's knot against the locked door.
The cord tightened twice. After Jori's usual pause, it tightened a third time from the other side.
