From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 938 - 938: Palla Keeps The Door From Following
The broken keeper groove moved during Fenn's lunch and pushed her bread off the evidence table.
Fenn caught the bread against her shirt. The groove kept going inside its clear paper wrap, scraping three inches across the chalk grid Palla had drawn around it.
"That thing already ate our tram, so my lunch stays mine."
"Move the bread and leave the paper where it stopped."
Palla put one finger on the wrapping. The brass beneath it tugged toward the casualty board bolted beside the west tram stairs.
The fourth desk sat beyond the table with its plates flat and its hand socket packed in wax. No lamp showed behind the glass. The carriage had stayed dead through six shift changes and two children daring each other to knock on it.
Fenn moved her lunch to a crate.
"The desk is innocent this time, which feels personally insulting."
Palla cut the evidence string without lifting the paper. A gray fiber had grown through the broken groove's half owner line. It was finer than cage wire and stiff enough to score the chalk as it turned.
Davi raised his collar speaker.
"Commander Vey, evidence from the dead carriage has resumed movement."
"The carriage remains dead. One broken owner line is pulling."
Palla slid an empty evidence plate between the groove and the wall. The fiber crossed it without slowing. She added a clean West Four maintenance tag. It brushed the punched metal and continued toward the casualty board.
Nessa's name sat on the survivor row. Beneath it, Vey had recorded a matched field pulse, an unverified location, and unwitnessed companions.
The gray fiber lifted from the table and pointed at that entry.
Fenn stopped chewing.
"My sister's name sits two rows below hers. Nobody tests whether the line pulls there next."
Vey came down the stairs with two engineers and the original recovery order in a flat case. He read the chalk grid before he looked at the fiber.
"Nobody touches the board until Palla proves what the line selects."
Palla copied Nessa's name onto a blank casualty card using ink from the same bottle. The fiber stayed over the broken groove.
She pressed Fenn's packing grease onto another card. Nothing moved.
Davi removed the grease marked recovery order from Vey's case and placed it beside the blank cards.
The fiber struck the case hard enough to bend its paper hinge.
One engineer reached for the order. Vey caught the man's sleeve.
"Hands stay clear until we know whether that pull stops at paper."
Palla moved the order with wooden tongs. The fiber followed across the grid, stopped above Nessa's thumb mark, then drew the whole case toward the tram stairs.
"It selects her matched record, not her written name or grease alone."
Davi crouched on the opposite side of the table.
"Then we have a route attached to Captain Cord and a duty to test it."
Fenn folded her rescued bread inside its cloth.
"We have a hook attached to her paperwork, and hooks pull both directions."
Palla set the inert black knuckle between the fiber and Nessa's order. The gray strand passed around the bone. It neither entered the old cage channels nor woke the five dead marks cut into its side.
The loose cage handle from West Four's emergency sockets received the same test. The fiber ignored its maintenance punch until Palla laid Nessa's order beneath it. Then the handle jumped toward the groove.
Vey watched both objects settle.
"Can the line carry one living person without taking the board?"
"It has shown a recovery pull and no carrying surface. Opening one requires a living address, and it has chosen the survivor entry as that address."
Davi tapped the table once, paused, then twice. Nessa's lost team call.
The fiber answered with one steady drag.
He repeated the cadence against the brass case. Fenn used her keg hook on the table leg, giving the line a second material and a different sound.
The drag never changed.
Palla pulled Nessa's order away. "Captain Cord answers one held contact followed by two separate strikes. This line has supplied neither choice nor answer."
"She could be injured beyond making the response."
"She could also be nowhere near the other end."
Davi looked at Nessa's survivor entry again.
"If we close that pull, record that West Four saw a possible road and refused its missing captain."
Fenn put her cloth wrapped bread into his free hand.
"Record that my sister's name was hanging from the same board."
Vey took the evidence slate from the first engineer.
"Record both statements with every failed cadence test attached."
The separate Sadle keeper cup knocked beneath the table.
Everyone turned toward it except the gray fiber. That kept pulling at Nessa's order.
Palla had left the Sadle cup outside the dead carriage after breaking Meren's last keeper groove. Its brass mouth now held Fenn's clipped copper tag, Sorn's torn seal, and the Oltin shoulder pin they had sent as warning.
A new cord bound the three pieces. Toman used that ruled clerk string on Switch Nine ledgers. Eleven short ink marks crossed it, one for each patient who had witnessed the altered workers and the burial route.
The returned seal wrapped around a narrow iron key.
Fenn leaned over Palla's shoulder.
"Did Sadle repair our warning or send us a bill?"
"Both would be consistent with the people we met there."
Palla unwound the clerk string. A strip from Toman's ledger lay beneath it in Denna's blunt handwriting.
Bring the hand that split the mark with seven cuts. Keep the road shut behind it.
The key's single deep notch allowed one living crossing and could draw no cargo back to Meren.
Palla placed it beside the gray fiber. Both pieces turned toward the only straight carriage bar left beneath the evidence table.
The bar could seat one direction. Trying to hold both would connect Sadle's hearing to the owner line already hunting Nessa's record.
Davi saw the angles.
"Seat the gray line first, confirm whether our captain stands there, and close it before opening Sadle."
"The first opening spends her survivor entry as the address. That use remains on the record after closure."
"You are asking us to abandon the only trace we have received."
Palla slid the original recovery order back into Vey's case.
"I am asking Commander Vey whether Meren's record of a living captain may become recovery property for an unidentified hand."
Vey closed the case and gave it to the engineer farthest from the table.
"The survivor row stays a record of people, even when one of them is my captain to recover."
Davi stared at the gray fiber. His grip tightened around Fenn's bread until the cloth wrinkled.
"Then let the record show I requested the bounded test."
"Your request and my refusal both carry West Four's name."
Palla seated the Sadle key in the straight bar.
The keeper cup opened no wider than her shoulders. Floodwater moved across tile on the far side. Brake oil stained one wall, and Toman's ledger table stood beyond a line of occupied patient cots.
The gray fiber rose from the broken groove and curled around Palla's evidence satchel.
Fenn hooked it away. The strand bent around the keg iron and pulled toward the Sadle opening.
"That hook returns to my brewery after it saves your witness."
"Bill Sadle if the hook comes back shorter."
Palla packed the broken groove, the inert black knuckle, and a copy of Nessa's order, leaving the original with Vey beside the survivor board.
With his rifle stock, Davi braced the carriage bar as Palla put one boot through the narrow opening.
The gray fiber climbed Fenn's hook.
Palla pulled Sorn's ruined drawer rail from the evidence rack and drove its bent end over the strand into the wooden table. The fiber flattened beneath the iron. Its pull shook the table but never reached her satchel.
Fenn leaned both hands on the hook.
"Cross before this thing decides my arms count as a road."
Palla stepped into Sadle with the satchel against her ribs. The key split behind her, and floodwater slapped the back of her boots as the opening closed against Meren's dry tram air.
Beside Toman's table, Denna waited with Sorn and eleven patients watching from their cots. She checked Palla's boots, the satchel, and the empty wall where a route might have followed.
"You brought the witness hand and left the open road behind."
"That was the first condition I could satisfy."
Toman cleared a place beside the worker ledger. Palla set down the broken owner line, then laid Nessa's copied recovery order beside it.
He touched the copy with his pen.
"Does the captain named here know you closed her possible road?"
"She never answered it, so write that before you write my reason."
Toman wrote unchosen beside the gray pull, then handed Palla the pen for her name.
