Chapter 940 - 940: The House Keeps One Worker Upright

  • Next Chapter

Behind the locked door, one living person died four different ways in Jade's damaged eye.

The first body struck the ceiling when the threshold opened. The second folded around the door frame after Ruvan moved the seventh counter. A third stayed upright while something inside the chest pulled toward the black stake. The fourth lost its shadow through the floor before the body followed.

Jade covered the damaged eye with her palm. White blood pressed between her fingers.

"One person is alive inside, and the current load kills them at the threshold."

Ruvan kept one hand on the crossing table.

"Which counter gives that person a survivable floor?"

"My eye shows where death finishes. You still have to build everything between."

Meya drew Jori's cord away from the private door and tied it around her belt beside the arm that remembered the nursery's old floor.

"Move the house onto public stakes in thirds."

Ruvan shook his head while his floating knee pulled toward the table edge.

"Clinic Five has one spare hand of load, Harven's kitchen has less, and north sleeping already drifts past code."

"Your private house has been spending all three margins."

Harven planted his roof hook beneath the shutter ledge.

"My kitchen takes one share after my wife clears the oven wall."

Ruvan sent a runner toward the kitchen shaft. Meya sent another toward Clinic Five with instructions to move every cot clasp onto the yellow rail. The north sleeping tier received a red rope warning and six minutes to wake anyone still under ceiling nets.

Rillhold answered with measurements of how much down, how long the transfer lasted, and which wall would receive their children if Ruvan's count failed.

Through the speaking tubes, Ruvan gave each room its numbers while Meya named the people responsible for every rope.

Ty's skull shifted inside Jade's coat.

"I can brace three lines with one chain while every bone keeps the same down."

Jade looked through her good eye at his collared ribs.

"Your skull stays with me, and every piece releases when I say your name."

"That is a considerably better use of my name."

Meya checked the chain path herself. She ran it through one gallery ring, around the clinic line, beneath Harven's kitchen rope, and across the sleeping tier brake. Every piece of Ty remained on the gallery floor. His chain could distribute force without asking his bones to choose separate directions.

Nessa raised the pulse cutter in her left hand.

"When the seventh stake unloads, its hidden layer will be exposed for one cut."

Jade kept her body between the cutter and the well.

"The cut comes after all three public braces answer."

"The route could close while we wait for room reports."

"Then we lose metal before we lose another person."

Nessa lowered the cutter and kept watching the hidden layer.

Two knocks from the kitchen tube confirmed Harven's wife had cleared the oven wall. A long pull from Clinic Five placed its cots on yellow.

North sleeping took longer because a child had tied a ceiling net through the public line and refused to leave without the trapped blanket. The tier answered only after somebody cut the blanket rather than the rope.

Ruvan moved the first seventh stake counter into the clinic column.

The private house leaned. A wooden cup slid past its shutter, struck the wall, and spilled water across the glass.

Jade opened her damaged eye.

Three deaths remained.

Ruvan moved the second counter to Harven's kitchen. The black stake rose a finger width from its well. Ty's shadow came free of the lowest square bite and lay crooked across the gallery.

The kitchen line loaded against his chain.

Ty held every rib still. Jade felt the pull through the coat belt and braced both feet under the gallery ring.

"Ty Hockenson, release one hand of chain toward Harven."

One link passed through the collar. His bones stayed where Meya had put them.

The speaking tube from the kitchen rattled.

"Red wall held, oven held, and my wife wants Ruvan's best cupboard after crossing."

Ruvan moved the third counter into north sleeping.

Orra coughed.

The gallery pitched toward the clinic well. Ruvan's bad knee struck the table from below. Meya's tied forearm pulled her backward while the rest of her fell toward Clinic Five.

Jade caught Meya's belt. Harven caught Jade's waist rope. Ty's chain took all three public lines and dragged his collars across the floor without dividing a single bone.

"Ty Hockenson, hold every collar where Meya placed it."

His chain stopped moving.

The private house dropped level with the gallery. Its lock turned once.

Jade's damaged eye showed one death.

The final body remained behind the door while the black stake pulled through its chest.

"Nessa, take your shaving before the house loads again."

Nessa crawled to the seventh well on her left knee and good hand. Her strapped right arm twisted toward the exposed black shaft. Two cage needles pushed against her sleeve, so Harven looped a red cord above her elbow and held the arm away from the metal.

She set the pulse cutter flat against the gray layer beneath the coating.

One thin shaving came free.

The cutter stopped. Nessa placed the sample in Ruvan's empty counter tray rather than touching it to her cage.

"Same pressed grain as the prison rail, with a square punch beneath the finish."

"Can it keep the door locked after the load moved?"

"The lock has already released from the house side."

Jade saw the latch lift before anyone touched it.

She pulled the door toward herself with Ty's chain. A shadow slipped through the gap and ran up the clinic well. The body stayed inside.

"Ruvan, move no counters until Meya names the harness."

Meya entered sideways, keeping her bad forearm outside. Harven held Jori's cord. Jade widened the door by one chain link.

A wooden carrying frame stood in the center of the house. A woman was strapped inside it at her shoulders, hips, wrists, and knees. Her left shoulder hung toward the ceiling. Both legs pressed against the floor. The skin below her ribs pulled toward the black stake hard enough to bend the waist belt inward.

Her eyes followed Meya. Her neck stayed trapped against a padded board.

"Meya, your brother tied an irritating knot before leaving me here."

Meya's good hand closed around the door edge.

"Sennik Roe, you owe me eight days of complaints in person."

"I intend to collect interest from your loadmaster first."

Ruvan came to the threshold. Sennik's shadow climbed over his boots while her body remained in the frame.

"Your name and living load never appeared on the private tally."

"You signed the blank where both should have been."

He took the accusation without reaching for his counters.

Jade kept the house door at one chain link. The death in her damaged eye still ended at the black stake.

"Which straps can move without tearing your body toward another wall?"

Sennik tested each hand. Her right fingers closed. The left hand lifted toward the ceiling and stopped against its belt.

"Keep every strap until Clinic Five receives my chest load. My right wrist can leave after the kitchen takes my hips."

Through both speaking tubes, Ruvan repeated the order. While the house shifted one finger width, Meya held Sennik's jaw and caught her cough in the cloth tied beneath her mouth. The pressure against Sennik's stomach eased when the clinic line answered.

Nessa studied the harness pins from the doorway.

"Someone taught separate parts of her body to obey separate anchors."

"They called it teaching while we vomited into our collars."

Meya loosened the cord around Sennik's right wrist. Jori's knot sat beneath the buckle.

"Where did they take Jori after he tied this cord?"

"Six blank helms carried the old stake toward Orra's underside. Jori kept kicking until their lift closed."

Meya pulled the knot against her good palm.

"Why did the search lines never receive your signal?"

Sennik looked at Ruvan.

"Private loads stay outside public tallies. I have pulled Jori's ladder count through that cord at every shift change."

Ruvan looked toward the black stake and the quiet seventh column.

"What did the blank helms need from your body?"

Sennik waited until Clinic Five took another share from her chest belt.

"The helm without a face said the stake needed my living down until it learned Kavel. After that, their prison could stop running."

The black stake drove deeper into Orra.

Every counter in the seventh column jumped. Beneath the gallery, something struck the roadback's underside twice, waited through Jori's usual pause, and struck once more.
