Chapter 1410: 1409 so sad

Fang Zhiwei let out a piercing scream of “Ah!”

Jing Xiaocha’s eyes widened as she exclaimed, “Sister Fang!”

Wen Jin’s face changed dramatically as well. He was too far away to catch Fang Zhiwei, but instinctively rushed forward. Just as Fang Zhiwei thought she was about to plummet off the building, Gu Kai, who had circled around from the other side, darted forward in one swift motion and grabbed one of her arms.

On the other side, Lu Zhiyan also dashed over as her body leaned backward.

Fortunately, it turned into a perilous moment without tragedy. Fang Zhiwei was pulled back safely with their combined efforts.

Jing Xiaocha’s heart, which had been suspended high, dropped heavily. She ran forward and cried out with concern, “Sister Fang, thank goodness you’re okay! You scared me to death just now.”

Fang Zhiwei stood there dazedly, unsure if it was due to shock or for some other reason.

She ignored Jing Xiaocha and blankly stared at Gu Kai, who was still holding her. After a long moment, she softly said, “Ah Kai.”

Gu Kai had traces of cold sweat forming on his forehead, a remnant of the fright caused by watching Fang Zhiwei lose her balance and almost fall.

“How could you joke about your own life like that? What if you’d actually fallen?”

Down below, though there were emergency pads set up, a fall from dozens of floors would still lead to unimaginable consequences.

Fang Zhiwei’s eyes reddened as his scolding hit her, and she burst into tears, throwing herself into his arms. “Ah Kai, I didn’t know… I just felt so sad. I wanted to escape.”

Gu Kai’s tall frame stiffened slightly.

Just as he was about to push Fang Zhiwei away, Jing Xiaocha reached over from beside him and pulled on Fang Zhiwei. “Sister Fang, don’t be sad. Come on, I’ll treat you to dumplings.”

Gu Kai took the opportunity to push her off him, and Fang Zhiwei’s attention was momentarily caught by the dumplings Jing Xiaocha was holding in her other hand. For the time being, she didn’t seem to mind Gu Kai’s actions.

“Sister Fang, try one.”

Jing Xiaocha used a toothpick to pick up a dumpling shaped like a rabbit and brought it to Fang Zhiwei’s lips, softly saying, “When I’m sad, I like to eat something. Once I’ve eaten my fill, I don’t feel sad anymore.”

“Xiaocha, your dumplings are cold. Help Sister Fang downstairs first and heat them up at home before eating.”

Wen Jin’s warm voice sounded from behind. Jing Xiaocha immediately understood and shoved the box of dumplings into Fang Zhiwei’s hands. “Sister Fang, I’ll come to your house later and teach you how to make dumplings, okay?”

Fang Zhiwei passively accepted the box Jing Xiaocha handed over.

She lowered her head to glance at the dumplings inside the box, then looked up at Gu Kai. “Ah Kai, can you stay to have New Year’s Eve dinner with me?”

Gu Kai’s gaze changed slightly; he wanted to refuse, but thinking about Fang Zhiwei’s earlier suicide attempt, he pressed his lips together and asked Lu Zhiyan and Wen Jin, “Will you guys join us?”

“No problem,”

Lu Zhiyan readily agreed, his long eyes sweeping over the dumpling box in Fang Zhiwei’s hands. “Later, prepare me a bowl of dragon dumplings.”

“I’d be spending New Year’s Eve alone at home anyway. Since there are zodiac dumplings, it’d be a waste not to eat them. Do we need to prepare the filling?”

“Sister Fang’s house surely has the ingredients, doesn’t it, Sister Fang?”

“Mm.”

Seeing that Gu Kai had agreed to spend New Year’s Eve with her, Fang Zhiwei felt slightly better. She lifted her eyes to glance at him again and added, “The house has everything.”

Jing Xiaocha supported Fang Zhiwei as the group headed downstairs.

After getting in the car, Gu Kai dialed a call to his father, Gu Yan, telling him he’d return later.

The rural New Year’s Eve was tranquil.

Though some people set off fireworks, it was rare. Bai Yiyi took a bath, lay in bed, and started checking and replying to messages.

On WeChat, text messages, and Weibo, New Year’s blessings filled the air, along with various red-envelope snatching games. Bai Yiyi didn’t feel like grabbing any envelopes; she replied to a few blessings and then browsed through the saved photos of Tongtong on her phone.

A WeChat notification popped up, Yiyi clicked on it—it was someone in her company’s group chat posting red envelopes.

Someone posted pictures in their Moments, captioned with tonight’s blessings. Unlike the usual photos of fireworks and New Year’s Eve dinners, these pictures showed a crowd gathered under a certain building, and a person sitting on the rooftop. It also showed Gu Kai, Wen Jin, and others walking out of the building with Fang Zhiwei.

Bai Yiyi’s eyes darkened a little. She zoomed in on the photo, stared at it for a few seconds, and frowned slightly.

Unconsciously, she continued scrolling through the Moments feed, hesitating over whether to call Gu Kai to ask what had happened.

Before she could act, another new post appeared in Moments. She clicked into it—it was Fang Zhiwei’s post. Her fingers involuntarily opened the attached photos.

Staring at the people in the photos, Bai Yiyi’s gaze dimmed.

Her chest felt inexplicably heavy. Even though the photos didn’t feature just Gu Kai alone, nor were they intimate shots of him with Fang Zhiwei, not even a trace of romantic ambiguity was evident.

Still, she felt deeply unsettled inside.

One photo showed Gu Kai, Wen Jin, Lu Zhiyan, Fang Zhiwei, and Jing Xiaocha gathered around a table, making dumplings.

Another photo was a candid shot of Gu Kai alone, his lowered eyes focused intently on the dumpling he was working on. On the table were zodiac-shaped dumplings.

The third photo featured both Gu Kai and Wen Jin. Since they were seated close together, each of them held a freshly made dumpling—Gu Kai holding one shaped like Tongtong’s zodiac sign.

The last photo showed Fang Zhiwei and Jing Xiaocha together, holding dumplings. Unlike the previous three candids, this one was clearly posed.

The caption carried a hint of sadness: “In the days when one felt lonely, I couldn’t find a reason to keep living. But having him by my side—even with a group between us—brings sunlight into my world.”

Bai Yiyi unconsciously tightened her grip on her phone.

She read the caption repeatedly and stared at the photos for a long time, eventually abandoning the idea of calling Gu Kai.

Gu Kai didn’t end up staying for New Year’s Eve dinner at Fang Zhiwei’s house.

Just as he managed to learn how to make dumplings for three zodiac signs, his phone rang.

He pulled out his phone, frowned at the caller ID, and answered. “Hello!”

Sitting across from him, Fang Zhiwei had lifted her head to look at him the moment he took out his phone.

Though she couldn’t hear the voice from the other end of the call, she noticed Gu Kai’s expression suddenly shift as his face tightened. “Prepare for the surgery now; I’ll return to the hospital immediately.”

Disappointment flickered across her eyes as her eyelids lowered lightly.

“The hospital received an emergency patient. I have to head back at once. Wen Jin, stay here with everyone,” Gu Kai said as he hung up the phone. He had already stood up when he addressed Fang Zhiwei directly, “I’m leaving now. If anything comes up, tell Wen Jin and Zhiyan.”

“Ah Kai.”

Fang Zhiwei softly called out, but Gu Kai, having already taken two steps, didn’t look back and quickly walked out of the living room.

She was held back by Jing Xiaocha beside her. “Sister Fang, Doctor Gu has to go save someone. Let him go. Come, I’ll teach you how to make puppy-shaped dumplings.”
