Chapter 1409: 1408 You're here
Chapter 1409: 1408 You’re here
When Gu Kai and Wen Jin reached the rooftop, they heard Fang Zhiwei yelling at Lu Zhiyan, saying she wanted to jump.
“Zhiwei!”
Hearing Gu Kai’s voice, Fang Zhiwei froze.
She stared blankly at Gu Kai, who was stepping forward from behind Lu Zhiyan. Under the hazy moonlight, his figure appeared tall, graceful, and refined, his eyes filled with worry and tension as he looked at her.
Suddenly, she laughed.
The smile was tinged with sorrow as it spread across her lips. “Ah Kai, you’re here.”
Gu Kai’s brows furrowed, the light in his inky eyes shifting, and he took a few more steps forward. As he walked past Lu Zhiyan, Fang Zhiwei, who had been staring at him intently, abruptly stopped him: “Don’t come closer!”
Her tone was as cold towards him as it had been to Lu Zhiyan moments earlier, as though spring had instantly turned to winter. Her gaze sharpened, “None of you are allowed to come closer.”
Gu Kai had no choice but to stop.
Frowning deeply, he looked at Fang Zhiwei, who refused to come down from her spot, fearing that any sudden movement might send her plummeting.
“Zhiwei, sitting up there is very dangerous.”
He softened his voice as much as he could and said, “Please come down; don’t make everyone worry…”
“Worry?”
Fang Zhiwei sneered, cutting him off and speaking with sarcasm, “Ah Kai, do you even worry about me? Stop lying to me.”
Gu Kai’s eyes flickered with unease, his chest tightening with confusion as Fang Zhiwei continued, “If it weren’t for you barging into my life, giving me hope, making me fall so deeply for you that I couldn’t pull myself out, and indirectly causing my father’s death, I wouldn’t be like this now—so lost that I don’t know how to live anymore.”
Her voice was drenched in sorrow, trembling slightly in the bitter winter night. Each word of blame caused Gu Kai’s expression to shift repeatedly.
Behind him, Wen Jin frowned and whispered to Lu Zhiyan, “Why did she come here?”
“I don’t know. I happened to be at my aunt’s house when my cousin was using his telescope to stargaze and coincidentally spotted her. I rushed over and realized it was her,” Lu Zhiyan explained softly, covering his mouth with one hand to lower his voice.
Luckily, his cousin had seen her.
“Zhiwei, I admit it’s my fault. Whether you resent me or despise me, please don’t hurt yourself like this.”
Gu Kai spoke gently to comfort her, inching forward step by step, trying to close the distance between them.
“Don’t move closer.”
Fang Zhiwei screamed, her emotions growing increasingly erratic.
“Do you know? They said I have depression, and it’s getting worse. Ah Kai, this is all your fault. You’re the one who hurt me. If I jump from here, will you finally realize that you actually care about me?”
“Zhiwei, calm down,”
Gu Kai’s face turned pale as he saw Fang Zhiwei shift her body slightly. His heart leapt to his throat.
“Brother Wen, Officer Lu.”
From behind, Jing Xiaocha’s slightly breathless voice broke through. Wen Jin turned around and made a silent gesture for her to keep quiet. Jing Xiaocha blinked and slowed her steps forward.
She glanced at Fang Zhiwei seated above, then at Gu Kai, and her delicate brows revealed a faint smile as she cheerfully called out, “Sister Fang, I called you earlier, but you didn’t answer. Why did you come here?”
“Don’t come closer.”
Fang Zhiwei tightly gripped the marble edges on either side, her sharp gaze fixing on Jing Xiaocha as she approached.
Jing Xiaocha smiled nonchalantly, seemingly unfazed. “Sister Fang, I told you yesterday I’d bring you twelve zodiac dumplings. Here they are. Look, I made all twelve—they’re shaped perfectly.”
Only then did Wen Jin and Lu Zhiyan notice Jing Xiaocha carrying something in her hands, which they hadn’t paid attention to earlier.
When she opened the box, indeed there were twelve dumplings inside, each shaped vividly like the zodiac animals. As the box was unveiled, a fragrant aroma wafted out with the night wind.
“Sister Fang, would you like to try them? The elderly ladies at the nursing home praised my dumpling-making skills. I told them I know an amazing professor from T University’s Medical Department. Grandma Li even said she’d like to meet you sometime and invited us to visit.”
Jing Xiaocha spoke lightly as if conversing casually. Even under the night sky, her radiant smile stood out clearly. Fang Zhiwei gazed at her pure, cheerful expression, listening to her lively, pleasant chatter, and catching the enticing aroma of dumplings from her box.
For reasons she couldn’t fathom, the despair and sorrow overwhelming her heart produced a faint, unfamiliar feeling.
Like someone trapped in endless darkness who suddenly catches sight of a ray of light ahead, her agitated emotions seemed to subside slightly as her eyes quietly settled on the box Jing Xiaocha held.
The box held dumplings.
Jing Xiaocha smiled with narrowed eyes and pushed the box forward a little more. “Sister Fang, look—don’t they look realistic?”
“Where did you learn this?”
Fang Zhiwei’s voice emerged softly, her gaze at Jing Xiaocha tinged with confusion, surprise, and a touch of nostalgia—a faint sense of recollection or longing.
Wen Jin and Lu Zhiyan exchanged glances. Yesterday, when Jing Xiaocha mentioned making twelve zodiac dumplings for Fang Zhiwei, they hadn’t understood why.
Lu Zhiyan had even joked about how impossible it was to craft dumplings resembling twelve zodiac animals.
Unexpectedly, she had actually brought them.
And in this situation, no less.
Gu Kai glanced at Jing Xiaocha standing beside him. Her smile was clean and gentle, her outstretched hands holding the box of dumplings.
One foot shifted slightly as he tried to inch closer while Fang Zhiwei’s attention was distracted.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Lu Zhiyan moving subtly to the right. His brows knit slightly, and his thin lips pressed together as he continued observing Fang Zhiwei’s shifting emotions.
“I learned from Grandma Li. Sister Fang, Grandma Li is so kind. When she heard you liked twelve zodiac dumplings, she said she’d like to meet you. If you’re interested, she could even teach you how to make them.”
“Grandma Li?”
Fang Zhiwei’s face showed confusion; though some of her defenses seemed to have lowered, she still remained wary of them.
“Yes! I’ve known Grandma Li for years. She’s kinder to me than anyone else has ever been. She’s had a hard life but is very resilient. She spent nearly her entire life looking for her daughter and never gave up. Oh, and her daughter loved the zodiac dumplings Grandma Li made too.”
“Sister Fang, this dumpling filling is made by Grandma Li. I don’t know what ingredients she included, but its fragrance is amazing.”
“It smells like mint.”
Fang Zhiwei murmured.
Gu Kai saw her gaze shift toward Jing Xiaocha and took the opportunity to move slightly farther around the side.
“Yes, it has a mint aroma. Sister Fang, would you like to try?”
Jing Xiaocha giggled, pulling her hands back momentarily to sniff the dumplings placed before her. She closed her eyes briefly in satisfaction before reopening them. “They’re making me hungry!”
A trace of emotion flickered in Fang Zhiwei’s eyes. She pressed her lips together and seemed about to speak, but then she caught sight of Lu Zhiyan circling toward her from the other side. She instantly realized what was happening, her emotions shifting violently again. “Don’t come closer!”
As the words left her mouth, she stood abruptly, causing her center of gravity to sway backward…
